  1. *laugh* I like the idea... now lets see how many people could manage to keep a virtual bug moving along. If appropriate information is left in each log, there is a good chance it could work. As long as everyone was insanely careful and detailed with their actions in the logs and stuff. Weird idea to come up with though... you must be quite insane. The Toe Pages

  3. I actually dug out several varieties of shrink plastic out of the paper bin... I have clear, with both sides shiny - clear, with one side rough for inkjet use - and then I have an opaque white, which is shiny on both sides. The rough side is a must if you want to do any printing with your inkjet - my first attempts with the white shiny stuff resulted in a smeared mess. Sharpies work great on all of those different types, and appears to be permanent both before and after shrinking. The black sharpie, that is... the red seemed to smear a bit if you force the issue. As for stamps, I've not tried any of that sort of thing yet - but I'd guess a rough surface would be best for any type of ink transfer... be it a stamp or ink from a printer. The opaque white stuff melts the best, and it seems a bit thicker and durable. The brand name of that is Suze Weinberg's Bright White Shrinky Dink Brand Shrink Plastic. Oh... it has an url on the envelope, too: http://schmoozewithsuze.com I've gone through a few sheets and only produced a couple of things that I'd even consider leaving in caches... I'm still in practice mode. The Toe Pages
  4. I wanna make a somewhat serious complaint about fairly innocent threads being locked down, just because they are "off topic" and not relating to geocaching. I'm not sure if Jeremy was just in a bad mood or something when he was reading through the threads - but I didn't see any harm in that little "elite" thread. And, as for being off topic... I'd bet at least half of the posts in these forums aren't exactly about geocaching. Yeah, I know... they are "his forums" and he can "do what he wants" and all that - but I just wanted to say I didn't really see the harm in that thread, that's all. And tnx, planet, for the belated b-day wishes. The Toe Pages

  6. Actually, that is a brand name of shrinking craft plastic... I suppose the subject should actually read "Shrink Plastic" or something. But anyway... This stuff is quite possibly the best material for making personalized things or "signature items" to place in people's caches. You can make ornaments, keychains, necklaces, etc... pretty much anything you want. The kind that I got works in any inkjet printer, black and white OR color! I bet everyone did Shrinky Dinks as a kid... I had forgotten that I bought this craft plastic a few years ago when my wife had to make some things for work. I was digging around in a drawer, looking for some paper when I found this old package. I'm in the process of printing out a test "thing" now with my avatar on it. The Toe Pages
  7. Those two members you have must be spec-farking-tacular if that group is "great" already. I'm glad you have lots of enthusiasm, but when you come in here spewing hype about a brand new group with only two members, of course nearly all of us are gonna give you crap about it. Good luck with your group, though. The Toe Pages

  10. quote:Originally posted by Sissy-n-CR:While I know it's been discussed to death in a previous thread, however I challenge anyone to show me where Garmin, Magellan, or even Trimble use the acronym GPSr. On the other hand I _can_ show you where at least Garmin and Magellan have used the term GPS--sans "unit" or "reciever"--to refer to the hand held unit we all use. Well, no... GPSr is something that "we" just starting using to save the hassle of typing "receiver" or "unit" after GPS. And on the page http://www.garmin.com/aboutGPS/ you will see that nearly every reference to the "unit" is written as "GPS receiver" and not just "GPS" alone. But like you said... I don't think either one of the ways is wrong. I just think "GPSr" is just a little more right.

If it is the case that they dumped the cache and left without any means to maintain it, the cache should either be archived or adopted (preferred). Archiving doesn't seem like an option, here, to me... I mean - if it is archived on the site, it'll still be out there. If it is archived on the site AND someone removes the cache and keeps the goodies, the person that placed the cache is gonna be really cheezed off. You can't really fault the cache approvers on this one, because there are surely many caches that are placed in far away locations - yet the person might regularly go there and be able to perform maintenance if needed. Not to mention that many people have family or friends in different states that are willing to do cache maintenance for them. Without knowing the cache(s) in question, it's really hard to say if they are "bad" or not. I think most people's reaction around here would be to give the hider(s) the benefit of the doubt - and then clean up their mess if they turn out to be stop-n-drop abandoned cache spewers. 13. I am too lazy to Markwell you, but the tags are just regular old HTML, when doing cache/bug pages. You just include the body background tag, along with the url for the image you want to use as your background image. The Toe Pages
  14. I agree with the "r" being added to it. When you have the device in your hand, you aren't holding a Global Positioning System. You are holding a PART of the system. If you look at each individual satellite in the network, you wouldn't call them each a GPS. You'd call them a GPS satellite. It makes just as much sense that you'd call your unit a GPSr, or GPS receiver. *shrug* Nothing to do with PC... it's all about accuracy. The Toe Pages
  15. Last thing I need, when someone sees the GX logo on one of my caches, is someone thinking that I'm a fan of that assclown Gilderoy from Harry Potter. (I looked for more high rez pics of him in his get-up there, but couldn't find any) The Toe Pages
  16. quote:Originally posted by GoldKey:Toe, I am going to have to disagree with you. Even if the system assumes that you are not going to be able to fund the account, that only applies to future transactions. If you already paid for a subscription for a given time period and decided during that time period that you are not going to renew, it should still be assumed that you want continue to receiving the subscription for the remainder of the time you paid for. Ahh - yeah, I can't disagree with that... I just assumed that would be more of a problem with the way Groundspeak handles it, rather than PayPal. I wish I could see the interface and some transaction history from the subcription provider's point of view. I would think that if someone removes their card info, PayPal's automated stuff should send a notice to the subcription provider telling them the subscription has been canceled - I'd think it'd be up to the subscription provider to determine when the account should actually be deactivated. Is PayPal more involved in the actual subscription starting/cancelling @ Groundspeak than I am assuming? The Toe Pages
  17. My friends and I had a public access TV show in Columbus several years ago... if I were still doing that, I'd probably actually do a show devoted to geocaching. I think the hobby would be better served by a longer amount of tv exposure, explaining everything, maybe going on a search or two - rather than just a short blurb about geocaching and a flashing url for everyone to visit. Hmm... almost makes me wanna throw together a half hour of info. If anyone is in the Columbus Ohio area, perhaps you remember "Squirtman" or "This Show Sucks" which were shown a few times a week on ACTV / Community 21. Those shows were really bad... but it was fun to do. But it looks like the public access studio was shut down anyway. )

  20. I'm not sure what the scoop is with the latest finds on that cache, but when it comes down to it - if you don't find and fiddle with the actual cache, it's just not a find. That's how I play, anyway. It just seems like people who play around with joke finds, fake finds, alien finders, etc... it just seems like they don't really take the game/hobby seriously. *shrug* The Toe Pages
  21. quote:Originally posted by LarsThorwald:So what's my point? If you have to update, I'd suggest you activate your NEW card on the PayPal site first, THEN delete the old one. Good luck! Umm... not to be rude, but that should be obvious. If the system sees you delete your credit card, it would assume that you are no longer going to be able to fund the account that you are subscribed to - and it would/should cancel that subscription accordingly. You can't really blame PayPal and give them angry faces when it was something that you did. PayPal is MY friend. I've used that service for a long long time, and I've never had any problems at all. I wouldn't have posted and said anything about this if you hadn't kinda given PayPal a lashing in the subject of your post. The Toe Pages
  22. I'd like to complain about two things. First of all, as of today, I am 30 years old. And second, although I don't want to admit it... I believe this thread has pretty much lost its usefulness. Lately, the complaints have been having a pretty good life of their own, in their own seperate threads. *sigh* The Toe Pages
  23. quote:Originally posted by magellan315:I have a question for Jeremy----- All rhetoric and agruments aside, is their going to be an attempt to notify the NPS that one of their employees is sending out these types of messages??? I'll toss in my two cents and say "let sleeping dogs lie" when it comes to this situation. There will be the ocassional "flea" that jumps off the dog and arrives here to annoy us - but in general, I tend to not stir up a situation when it isn't really necessary. Contacting the people above that flea's head would just make J&TPTB look like whiners, since J has already said he can (and did) just delete that account. If the same person insists on doing that sort of thing over and over, constantly creating new accounts when J deletes them - then I would think going to the appropriate supervisor might be a good option. *shrug* but what do I know. 24. Hmm... I suppose that sounds about right. Hrmm... okay - nevermind what I said. I just figure with a specific area to fill out the parking info, more people might start doing it. I guess it isn't a big deal though. I just always am uneasy when "new stuff" is getting added to the current, "comfortable" way that things are done. I don't like change, unless it is something that I request. Click to view the ToeCam
  25. quote:Originally posted by geospotter:More likely is that the LCD will be viewed THROUGH the viewfinder. This will conserve power (smaller LCD), give you a screen to review your image, and will make the camera more like an SLR, giving you a TTL (through the lens) preview of exactly what the camera will shoot. At least one camera is already doing this. Yeah, my other camera does this... my Fuji 4900z has a big LCD monitor, and then the teeny one that acts as a viewfinder. Personally, I don't care for it... I just can't get used to not having an optical viewfinder when I have the camera up to my face like that. I suppose it is nice to see all the shutter and aperature speeds and all that as you shoot the pic - but for whatever reason, I just can't get used to it. That FinePix 4900z is a monster of a camera though - buttons on every side of that thing. Takes some really good pics, but I don't use it for anything other than when I need "professional" quality. Like people have said here, it isn't exactly something you wanna lug around in the woods with yah. Extending lens, flip open flashes, buttons everywhere... bah. Oh, back on the topic of cheap digital cameras - it seems that the new "kewl" tiny digital camera on eBay is now this little SiPix Blink camera - oh, wait... I see everyone has already talked about this camera. I'm catching up... don't mind me... Click to view the ToeCam
