  1. The weather was so nice today, I decided to head on down to Moonville instead of waiting for the weekend. Lots of hunters in the woods around there, but none right by the tunnel there... and I think the deer knew that, cuz I must have seen 5 or 6 of them on my way out to scoop up the old cache and place the new one. 2. Well, it is November now - so I guess I have to do another good deed. I plan on heading back down to Moonville this weekend, as long as the weather looks nice. It doesn't look like anyone else is gonna make it before the colder weather sets in, and I'd like to make sure that little geo-mess is cleaned up before winter. Since there were a few things in that soggy cache that can probably be spared, like the coins, I will transplant any "good stuff" from the Moonville Cache into the new cache that I will be leaving in its place. It won't be in the exact same spot as the current one, but it will be somewhere nearby. That way, we're ridding the area of an abandoned/neglected cache - but still saving anything good from it, and using it in another cache nearby. Still a good spot, I'm not pocketing any stuff, and hopefully the cache will stay in better shape. Anyway - I will probably make one more post to this thread when the abandoned cache is archived, and when the new one is listed, just in case anyone wants to look at the particulars. 3. I think I'll make a trip back down to Moonville this weekend, weather pending. I'd kinda like to clean up that little geo-mess before winter, and since I am going to hide another cache nearby, I'd rather do it before the snow comes so I can find the best location. If it is still there, I plan on taking whatever "good stuff" is left in the Moonville Cache and transplanting it into the new cache that I'll be leaving nearby. I think I have one extra ammo box somewhere, so I'll try to use that. I'll make one more post in this thread once the deed is done, although anyone within 100 miles of there will see it on the weekly notification e-mail. *crossing my fingers, hoping for warm/dry weather* The NEW Toe Pages EDIT: The weather was so nice today, I decided to head on down to Moonville instead of waiting for the weekend. 4. Sure, next time you are in SE Ohio you can leave some in my Watershed BookCrossing Cache. The Toe Pages
  5. Yeah, Notify Bot is pretty friendly... I hear from him often. He doesn't reply much though - and he uses an awful lot of details in his e-mails. *sings* details in his emails... doo dah doo dah heh The Toe Pages
  6. I can't direct you to any off hand, but yeah - most folks find them elsewhere and then either download them and put them in their own web space, but some folks just link to them on the other sites. (kind of a no-no most places) And some of the real crazies take an image and edit it by adding things to it, like a GX geocaching logo... which is harder than you'd think, on an animated gif. 7. A three-legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He slides up to the bar and announces: "I'm looking for the man who shot my paw." Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of two weevils. 8. I'm not sure who all has a hand in running the site here, and I'm never quite sure how I should talk about them... I mean, what term I should use - but I've found something that seems to work well. "the powers-that-be" (TPTB) That throws a wide net over anyone that anyone that has a part in running things, be it Jeremy, the cache approvers, the marketing guys, etc. One term that I'm starting to really not like is "geocaching gods" It seems that whenever there is a post referring to TPTB as "gods" it usually is negative. Like, when someone doesn't get a cache approved, or when changes are made to the site that people don't like right away. Just curious what other people call Jeremy and company. (boy, this is a dangerous question... heh) The Toe Pages
  9. quote:Originally posted by bk11:They basically put a front end on somebody else's database. Which is all fine and dandy... this is, afterall, what the Internet is about (to me) - making information available to others. But this is exactly opposite of geocaching.com's position with "their" cache data. If the benchmark database people had the same attitude, there would be no benchmarking subsite at geocaching.com. It goes against my grain just enough to bug me and in turn, tarnish it. Oh geeze... I know I complain about a lot of things, but this is a little bit silly. So the benchmark database is public... well goody for us! We can be happy that the proper agencies have made the data public. Now, here at the site - they might not wanna give out their data. So what? We choose to list our caches here on this site, so why should anyone expect that they give that data to some other sites. Some people might even be bothered by THAT, if the data that we gave to geocaching.com were shared with other sites. *gasp* This is the way the world works, folks... some people will give stuff away, some people won't. Just because the grocery store downtown gives away free samples of cheesy poofs, it doesn't mean I should be bitter at the local five and dime if they don't. FWIW, I think that virtual should be accepted, if it is a benchmark that isn't in the database.
  10. quote:Originally posted by BootsWalker:Seems it doesn't matter as the geocaching gods have decided ANY benchmark hunting must be benchmarks listed on their site. In an attempt to place the cache this is the response I received: [snip] Of course I replied with my own opinion but have gotten no response. Umm - did you make it clear that this particular benchmark was not included in the database? I'm sure that with the many caches that need approving, they don't have time to sort through and see if someone is posting a virtual at a benchmark - er.. to see if the benchmark is already listed, etc. How much time did you give them to reply? You just seem pretty snippy already, when you even admit that they've not had a chance to reply to you yet. The Toe Pages
  11. Too much accuracy takes away the fun of mucking around in the woods. Last thing I want is for my GPSr to walk me up to the cache within a few inches... where's the fun in that? The Toe Pages
  12. See my log entry (with photos) from a recent cache I found, that was smack dab in a busy neighborhood with a park full of kids at the time. The Toe Pages
  13. I want to complain that I can't change the way I act when I'm in a chat room just because of what time and day it is. I'm used to hanging out in #geocache, among other channels, and just shooting the **** with the rest of the channel occupants - but on Monday night, everything is recorded and displayed on a web site, so we're supposed to keep it clean. I act in chat rooms as I'd act when I'm hanging out with friends - and I find it hard to keep myself "G rated" for a few hours every monday night. I feel fake if I don't just type as I'd speak. I suppose if I hang out there on Mondays, I'll have to learn to just lurk during those few hours of the "official chat" time. And it's funny - the time when the channel is supposed to be under control, that is when everyone comes in and uses the bright colors, bold fonts, etc. Not to mention quite a few loonies that just come in and start spewing at the mouth. Btw - does everyone think my avatar looks like a toe... or could it possible be some other part of the human anatomy? I bought this up in the channel - but the body part that someone told me it looks like, well, it isn't something that should be brought up on official chat night.
  14. First off, to all that are new to this thread... sorry, I had to remove all the pics and videos from my web space, cuz I needed it for some other things. But anyway... Mort is still here - in fact, he went back in to the pet hospital when my wife went to work today. We wanted to make sure everything was still good, cuz he was sneezing a little bit yesterday. Him and Kitty Burrito are still getting along okay, but I think Kitty will be a bit relieved when Mort goes, since Mort is so full of energy and always wanting to play. I just kinda hope that Mort goes to a person that has another cat... he seems a little needy sometimes. I sent some digital images of Mort into Forgotten 4Paws for their web site. I also have some regular prints coming back soon so I can do up the flyers like I planned. I didn't even realize they had a web site until I saw an ad in the paper the other day. Forgotten 4Paws If you go there, you'll see that they have quite a few animals waiting to be adopted. They say that little kittens like Mort usually go faster, so I'm still hoping they'll find a place for him soon. I suppose I wouldn't mind if we end up keeping him - but if someone is going to adopt him, I'd rather it be sooner than later. The Toe Pages
  15. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest_cache.asp?state_id=69 ? That'll give you the newest in Ontario... but I'm not sure there is a way to sort the caches, once you've brought up a list of the "caches within 100 miles" or whatever. The Toe Pages
  16. Nope, once again I've gotten this Toe by "other methods" that I shall share here. If you go to www.webshots.com and search for FEET or TOES you will be presented with an ample supply of feets and feet related parts. It's a bit scary, since I'm not really a fan of the foot... I don't really get it. I appreciate that they are out there, though, as it gives me a little choice in my avatars without having to pimp my own toe on here. At first I thought this toe looked a little fat... but the more I look at it, it just has a fat "head" - but a rather skinny "body" I suppose. This version is a little more evil looking - I made sure to add a little red to his eyes for good measure. The Toe Pages (edit: My current avatar came from the 4th image in this folder. ) [This message was edited by Rubbertoe on November 10, 2002 at 08:08 PM.]
  17. I'm not sure why you'd need a page here on geocaching.com to do that, when MapQuest already has that option right on their site. http://www.mapquest.com/maps/latlong.adp I think I'm probably missing your point though, since I read your post a few times and can't really understand what exactly you're wanting, and why we need it here. Yeah - nothing makes a kewler sound that setting off a pack of firecrackers inside an ammo box. Woohoo! The Toe Pages

I would have appreciated a direct email expressing the concerns about the cache. I agree... and, despite the original poster's good intentions - when someone starts a thread with the subject line of This cache is dangerous and illegal it is going to set off some bells and whistles here in the community. They didn't ASK if we thought it was dangerous and illegal, or provide any other constructive comments. A quick e-mail to you and their concerns could have been addressed without them having to post here to try to get everyone worked up about it. I hope you don't let this experience spoil your fun here. We're all full of opinions, but most folks use common sense before spouting off too much.
  22. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z:Hmmm, my first red flag for this cache is the statement "There's nothing interesting about the location of the cache" in the description. That right there is an issue. Sure, virtual caches are somewhat "required" to have a unique reason for their existance, but I've never heard that a regular cache must be placed somewhere that is exciting or unusual. The Toe Pages
  23. I've already decided that if/when I run into someone while hunting a cache... if I'm pretty sure what they are doing, I'd say something like "I bet you are here to do the same thing I was doing." (with a sneaky, almost sinister grin.) I'm actually kinda hoping that when I do use that line, that the people end up not being geocachers after all. That'll leave 'em wondering for a while, eh?
