  1. It seems to take a couple of days for mine. But it varies, I've had one go a week and a half, and one found same day.

    How?

Almost always in the woods. But sometimes in the city. Typically with a gps.
  3. Welcome! I fully expect you to come do some of my caches now though
  4. This one's at the Canadian Glacier NP I use a 5 year old Sony P-93. Been wanting to get an SRL for a couple of years now, but it just hasn't been in the cards.
  5. I know where 2 of them are. I wish I'd known about geocaching back when these things were in circulation, as there were a couple in striking distance. Maybe if I play my cards right they'll let me discover one of them
  6. The guidelines do indeed say not to pointlessly saturate an area. On a highway it doesn't really seem like the exact distances matter - these caches are what, 60 - 90 seconds apart? At least with an on-foot power trail you're still only going to be going about half that speed. Plus you actually have to work for those caches. Oh well, I guess it a bit of a reflection of our society - quantity over quality. It could be fun doing all those caches with friends, but I doubt I would have much fun with them. Doing poorly hidden caches and piling in and out of a car for hours on end doesn't sound too appealing to me. Vote with your wallet, or so the saying goes. If you don't like them, don't do them.
  7. Cool pic, but it's a little on the large side - I can only see about half of it at a time.
  8. Made this one for the g/f. Havn't had time to do mine yet though.
  9. Oh boy, photography cointest! <glee> So you like butterflies huh..... Me too I stood out on my deck for 45 minutes taking 30 second exposures to get this one: I've posted this before, as I have a cache nearby: I like flowers. They're slow and generally cooperative to my efforts
  10. I like the direction geocoins are taking. It seems like we're pushing past the conventions imposed on us by monetary coins (circular, single tone finishes, no colours) and starting to make geocoins into real works of art. A few examples of specific things I liked in certain coins: - I like the custom color options for the PURE Color travel edition coins - I love the transparent enamel poured over the 3d art work on the Project GAME coins - the pearlescent enamel on the Landsharkz personal coin - Unusual shapes. You could tell a Yime even if you were blindfolded. Things I would like to see: - Different materials, like with the crystal compass roses or the geogems. -Maybe coloured enamel onto (or into?) a clear "coin"? (hmm, Like the glass turtles I guess, in retrospect) - An electronic coin. With a watch cell I'm sure someone could make something that lights up. Or makes obnoxious sounds - A one piece sun catcher coin. I'm not a fan of the 2 piece construction I keep seeing - An end to the "thicker is better" trend. It really isn't Maybe some of these things already exist; Unfortunately I don't get to see as many coins as I would like. As for what makes a coin appeal to me. Hmm. That's sort of like asking what makes a painting good. Craftsmanship counts for any product I buy, but that really doesn't have anything to do with design. I guess it's a bit of an impossible question.
  11. Well, I'm kind of excited. I was driving along when I noticed something special about the car in front of me: I managed to snag a picture at a red light. I have no idea who this person was. Anyways, it's the first time in 3 years I've seen such a thing (come on, I wear my geocaching hat like all the time!), so it feels like a big deal. So I guess the question is, how many times have you spotted a cacher who isn't out in the wild? Bonus question: Am I weird for finding this exciting?
  12. If I'm going more that 15 minutes into the woods I always take: flashlight bear spray bug spray sunscreen hat jacket (rain only during the summer since it's so warm) batteries (ones that are charged!) twice as much water as I think I'll need And sometimes i'll take a lighter. It depends. That's not including caching supplies, but that's another thread..
  13. I found a homemade magnet with your sig printed on it a while back. It's totally on my fridge now.
  14. I don't have a membership anymore; after I depleted my areas caches it stopped being nearly a as useful. I do miss paperless caching though. That was nice.
  15. It may be that he has 0 hides because someone already took offence and his caches went swimming...... Or he could just be brutally honest. I know there have been a few caches I've bitten my tongue on (Really? The best place in this whole beautiful area you could think of is in a bush behind a dumpster? REALLY? )
  16. You can get free maps online, but you'll probably need to get a blank micro sd card (cost maybe $20). The altimeter isn't really needed, since any gps can tell you your altitude anyways. As for the electronic compass - well, that subject has its own thread. Short answer - not needed, but can be handy. As for refurbished units (i can only speak from personal experiance here), I don't recommend going that route. I've had just a few too many refurb products that just plain never worked properly, and/or seem to have rather short lifespans.
  17. I've encountered quite a few bears since I moved 3 years ago. They always just run off into the brush. I still carry spray though, since I travel mostly by mountain bike and it's a very quiet form of travel.

    Useless Hints

My favorite so far was "Well Hidden". I facepalmed when I read it. Still havn't found it either.
  19. I agree. You know what else really bugs me? Geocoins THAT AREN'T EVEN COINS. It seems people will put a tracking number on anything and call it a geocoin now a days.
  20. My sister & brother came with my new nephew as I hosted my very first ever thanksgiving this year! The baby ate his first ever "real" food (yay sweet potatoes!). We did that dinner on sunday, and monday was at my in-laws house. I decided to ride my bike out there one last time before the snow flies. But i didn't want to be long since I was riding my single-speed, so I rode the highway. But I didn't make it very far, as about a third of the way to my destination I passed a herd of Bighorn sheep on the side of the road. Apparently the unusually cold temperatures this year has brought the ewes into heat early, so the rams were down with the herd. Neat - I've never seen the rams up close before! But it gets better! From the safety of behind a fence, I got to watch 2 rams fight it out from 40 yards away! It's amazing (a) how LOUD they are when they collide, and ( how ritualistic the entire thing was. They would take turns showing each other their racks, back away, rear up and charge! But if they didn't both start their charges at exactly the same time they'd abort and start the whole thing over again. I've read that it's because they hit so hard if they were to hit off-center it could easily break both of their necks. Pretty amazing; I never expected that I'd get to see that in person, let alone from so insanely close.
  21. I've never really understood why activated coins are so unpopular to trade. Why go through all the trouble of making them trackable (and paying the exorbitant fees to do so) if you're not going to activate them? Besides, i think it's cool to be able to see who's ever owned that coin - I bought one from dorkfish on ebay, and never would have known if it hadn't been active. And besides, it logged a lot of miles when he shipped it to me
  22. My avatar can be found here. It's kinda square though; I'm not really sure how you're doing them.
  23. IIRC... there are some free maps from Garmin that you can download from their website and then load into the GPS and mapsource. Thanks for the information it looks as though it would cost me $100 I don't have to purchase maps, oh well. There are free maps you can get from other parties. They just don't work with the routing (no turn by turn directions)
