  1. Did the cache survive the fire? I had heard one of the homesteads was destroyed early in the fire reports. Was it the only one? Was that report even correct? A = A
  2. If you go to Palm Gear and type in GPS for a search you will find dozens of programs that will run a GPS. If you have PalmOS 3.5 or better Vito Navigation was just released a couple of days ago. I have not got it yet,but it looks like very simple program. I have found GeoNiche to be the best Geocaching program so far. It's designed with Geocaching in mind and has tons of room for notes about each hunt. If you have a older Palm then the freeware Cetus GPS will work with PalmOS 3.0 and is free. A = A

Park I think the majority of other caches located on larimer county land have not been given permission to place their caches. As we used to say in Science Class : Chapter and Verse please. On what information do you base these statements? Lapaglia "Muga Muchu" (forget yourself, focus). Actually Marss is quite correct in that you are supposed to ask permission before placing a cache even on public property it's in on the link from the main page. I have called to ask for permission before and found that it’s very hit and miss as to what you get on the other side. Sometimes you will find an enlightened person who wants nothing more then make everything go as smooth as possible and guide you in the placement. More often you find someone who wants to say no just because they don't know what to do with you and don't want to get into trouble. So I can understand why some might not ask in advance. Just because someone does not list it on the cache page does not mean they did not ask. Marss, you say "Forcing the management to be forced to come up with a management strategy to deal with this." as if that were a bad thing. I think a well reasoned strategy would be a good thing. Right now the method to get permission is very hit and miss. I think it about time every park had a method to get caches approved quickly and easily. I would also love it if a park were to list areas and places that might not be a good place to go off trail and the reasons why. In the Roosevelt and Arapaho forest I have found the volunteers very helpful in telling interesting places to go off trail. There is no problem with creating a cache off-trail. You just don't want to place one where a social trail will develop. This can be hard to predict, but any maintained cache will not have a long term problem with this. There are several reasons why a social trail is a bad thing. First its not very difficult to hunt for a cache that has a trail leading right to it. Where is the fun in that? It also creates problems for the forest service because then people expect the trail to be maintained. I think most Geocachers put a lot of thought into how a cache will effect the area they are planting. I know on my Roaring Creek cache I spent some time thinking about the vegetation in the area before I placed my cache. As a matter of fact that is what I was really looking at the ground for when I let Gabe go. I was sure to tell that story to a forest service volunteer so that they would have a story to help convince others that it is a good idea to obey the leash rule on that trail. I also recently checked on the Roaring Creek cache to make sure that no trails had developed. I have noticed in many log entries that hunters are quick to point out if a trail is developing, I find that quite helpful. I also can't understand why we don't put more money into forest personnel. Parks could be much more open if more people were on hand to guide people. One trend I found annoying when I was reading the Roosevelt monitor report was that some people are creating trails and then asking the forest service to maintain them! Nuts. I also heard this from a forest volunteer as well. Anyway, like I said earlier, you sound like a person who loves the outdoors. Grab a GPS and go find a cache here in Northern Colorado. I think you would have really liked the Lions Gulch cache, unfortunately it was park of the Big Elk fire. I was very lucky to have explored that area twice before it was burned. I posted some of the panorama pictures I took on last hike there. I just wish I had taken more film. Not that it matters now I guess, but someone was marking a unofficial trail up where one of the pictures was taken. We did our part and took apart the rock markers, but like I said... moot point now. 4. I have used it off and on for the last few months. A after 9/11 they reassigned the task to finding possible agents against Anthrax. Only took them a couple of weeks and they found several candidates, but some people were upset that there machines were temporarly reassigned without notice to the project. I thought it was cool and they did not hide it, just only lightly announced it and a lot of people missed it. Dan A = A
  5. I thought Bill last week, but this week I thought it was Heather. Here is my reasoning for Heather, and part of it has to do with her job with the GPS and the last mole. The last mole was always stressed out because of her dual role on the show. Last week she looked on the edge, and this week she looked like she really just wanted off the show. Dan A = A

  9. I think just about every PDA can hook up to juat about any NMEA (nearly all) GPS. Both PalmOS and PocketPC's have GPS programs available, so just get the one that fits the rest of your lifestyle the best. Dan A = A
  10. Marss, Go find a cache, and then you will have a better understanding of what is needed to be a responsible geocacher. I am glad to see you checked out the forums first though, but I think your ready to tackle your first cache. A great starter in Larimer county would be Cache La Poudre A = A
  11. Considering that Colorado Springs parks just said no to Geocaches and the same with City of Boulder, it would be a good idea if we had a group that they could contact. That and it would be really cool to have get togethers A = A

  13. Before you have a knee jerk reaction to the subject line. I have no problem with the cache owner putting whatever they want in a cache. But if I was traveling in Mexico I would not expect to find a cache note in English and I think it would be rude of me to expect it. I think anyone traveling here would expect to find all cache notes in English, for them to expect different is rude. If I were to hide a cache in France I personally would make sure that everything in the cache and cache note was in French, and if anything were in English it would be a small "in addition too" kind of thing. That said, a multi-lingual cache note I think would be a nice touch since this is an international sport. I would love to see a generator that would create a two-page cache note. First page would contain a large text version of the major language of the area, while the second page would contain several translations of the first. A = A

  15. GPSCalc will convert just about format and datum to any other. It has many datum's I have never heard of. Nad27, sure heard of that, WGS84 oh sure... Helmert 1906 huh. Indonesian 1974. It will convert UTM, SwissGrid and Lat/Long. NavCalc will project waypoints. For instance if you know two waypoints, and the bearings from each to a third point, it will project the lat/long for you. 17. Shoot half the time I plug in values into those mapping websites I am happy if the right state shows up. Sometimes the datum they use is different then WGS-84, sometimes the format they want not what they say they want. On one web site you could put the value in your pic of two different formats. In one it would agree spot on with the real world, the other it would be off by miles. But two other programs and two GPS's agreed those two values were the same long/lat just in different formats. 18. quote:Originally posted by Seth!:I hadn't visited the forums for a while. Now I remember why. I come across threads like "weapons" or other threads where people shamelessly display their illiteracy and narrow minds. I was really surprised by the quality of posts in that thread up until the troll posts. I have enough experience in forums to realize at that point the topic was forever lost, and anything that people wrote past that point was just responding to garbage, and hence the reply would be garbage too. But up to that point, I recommend it; it was pretty thought provoking up to that point. Dan A = A
  19. I would love it if you could do a short review of the Pocket Topo. I have XMap and wrote a review of it on here, but I have also been thinking about getting Pocket Topo for my Palm. I know you have a Pocket PC, but I used to own one so I should be able to figure out what would be different. I am most curious if it could be used as a Geocaching program ( could it direct you to a cache) and if it will record and playback trips on the N.G. Topo software. Dan A = A
  20. First off... This feature friken ROCKS! I am not a huge fan of Mobi, but I already had it because of few books I bought, so I can live with it. I would really like to have plain text as a option though so I could just import it into one of my other readers like WordSmith. When I did a search I asked for only those with a level two terrain or higher and I got some level ones. I have not had time to figure out what the pattern is, because I don't think I got all level ones. I would like the option to decrypt the hint, but not have it be the default. I have a decrypt program on the Palm. I only read the hint as a last resort. As long as I am wishing on someone elses time and hard work, I would like the logs to be on a seperate page. I am really only interested if the last few logs are no-finds. I don't want any spoilers if I can avoid it, but I like the info available if I get stuck. Once again, thanks for a way cool feature. 21. Since your looking to use the new combo in the urban jungle. I would bet most of the time from your car, I would just get a cable to connect your current GPS to your Palm and then get a program like XMap to talk to the GPS. Cheaper, and it would most likely give you longer battery life. Like I said in the subject, if you really want something that hooks to your PDA I would get the magellan. A = A
  22. While I have a Palm, I used to have a Pocket PC device so I talk about how I think it would run on a PocketPC machine. The short version is that I like it, but find it a little slow on the Palm. I suspect this is a program that would really show off a PocketPC. My complete review is here, A = A

  24. I have done many stupid things while looking for caches. I have learned from each one, and I don't repeat mistakes more then a couple of times. But I never blame the cache owner for my own injuries. I saw in advance what I was going into and then made the incorrect decision to plod on. One of the first lessons of geocaching is to get rid of "cache fever". That feeling as you get close to lose sight of everthing else except getting there. Even if you don't and decide that it is too dangerous, you have a interesting log to write. Now I just need to take my own advice about the "cache fever" thing... Dan A = A
