  1. why archive them if they are still in good shape?

some people, myself included, i take it upon myself to fix up the old caches if owners are not around anymore, that to a certain extent though

its nice to have all the old caches around, i see it as a treat to find them and to see them surviving the test of time

no, there is no PQ about Co's, what use would that be?...not to mention someone will complain that its a Privacy violation  ...click on their profile from the cache page to get any info on their last log in

The reviewer has noted several DNFs, the cache needs maint, etc. If no response, then the reviewer archives. I agree it would be nice to be able to keep the old ones around.

  2. I am not that familiar with posting in the fourms, so if this was already posted somewhere, sometime, me culpa

What to do with really old caches, 2000, 2001, etc that the owner is no longer involved...

And do we care if the old ones go away?

IS there a PQ to run to see if any owner is active or last time they logged in?

    Any thoughts? Here goes.

  3. I understand. I have just seen other caches that do this (in fact, I was using one particular page as a model.) The link to the document works, so I know I'm doing the programming wrong. I also understand that a previous cache placement does not set precedent for another cache. What I need to know now is how to ensure that folks who view the image can print it at the correct size. I am reluctant to give this information on my page as it gives a clue as to how to solve the puzzle. Thanks.

I think those other pages and linking the another web site that holds or hosts that file

    Good luck

  4. I dont post in the forums much , so I hope I got the right area.

    Expo Update: Volunteers Needed!

We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic people to help staff our Science Expo on April 4th at Balboa Park. Volunteers will help us staff information booths, hand out maps, answer questions and help our many collaborators throughout the day. In return, volunteers will be given a Festival t-shirt and our undying gratitude! If you are interested in helping out, please email acrynne@gmail.com.

In addition, as part of my Scouting organization, I will have a table called the Science of Geocaching. If you want to help man the table from 1030 to 6pm, let me know. I will have four caches for the kids to find. If you have any swag to donate such as patches, decals, other small trinkets, let me know. It should be a fun day!

  5. I went paperless early on, using a PocketPC and Cachemate, but I still print out a Google map of the area I'll be in so I can see where the caches are in relation to each other. I often use that map to keep track of the finds for the day, marking them off with a pen as I go. It's true you can accomplish a lot of that with the GPS, but I just like having an overview of the area.

    my 2 cents

I do the same thing. I am paperless, mostly, but its nice to have that printout. I would have saved me a lot the other day to park closer.

  6. StClairC, generally, the night-only caches involve reflective material, such as fire tacks. These can be very difficult to spot in the daytime as they are about half-inch triangular pins you can stick on tress. The Lights After Sunset cache is a bit different. From what I gather a device at the coords projects a light beam or laser to get you started. Activating the light beam appears to be part of the challenge/fun.

If you are a premium member, you can do a PQ and select an attribute, Recommended at night

  7. As of 20:10 12/22/07 we have completed all active Traditional caches in our 10 mile radius! We knew we were close yesterday so Mr. Kwver completed a few caches in the Southbay....Today was the day! We woke up early and returned to Sweetwater Resevoir to get a Lostguy and Bradybunch boys cache...Then it was off to a puzzle cache to complete another goal of 200 puzzles by the end of the year! We finished up the last Sweetwater Resevoir cache and headed over to Lake Murray to get 2 more...We called Jodi and she let us know that another cache had just posted and she thought that it may be within our 10 mile radius. I didn't think it was so I gave it a 50% try and had to drive back to Grossmont Center from Chula Vista to reach our goal. I called Mrs. Kwver with shouts of joy!!! As she began to post our victory she noticed that another cache had just posted 1.8 miles from home called "Kwvers Tea Party!" Fortunately Tombmaker was there and made the find...Two more caches were then posted and I had to go home to get a second wind. We sat around kinda defeated knowing that the two remaining caches were by Unknown2You...We went for it anyway and now have the goal complete...Just had to make it official...now if we could only catch up with J&J!![:)]

    Congrats!!

I better hide some more...:-)) :P:blink::P

  8. I installed cachemate on my Moto Q, running WM5. I cannot seem to import my gpx file. Also, tried to change database, but would not. Any help apprecaited

Some details would help. Why exactly can't you import the file? Are there any errors displayed?

As for the inability to select a database, if the program is unregistered then that explains it... that's one of the trial limitations.

Im running the trial version, thats why its not working for me.

Would like before buying. Any other software apps that I could try?

  9. It seems that the smartphone version of CacheNav didn't take that long, after all. From the site...

Release - CacheMate 1.0b (WM Smartphone)

This release adds support for GPS navigation, in the form of a Windows Smartphone version of the CacheNav plugin. It offers simple compass navigation when used with a connected GPS receiver. Enjoy!

  10. For a while now, we have been receiving two copies of emails from GC.com for all notifications and for our pocket queries. They are always sent to the same e-mail address at exactly the same time. I can't see any reason why.

Mysteriously, a couple of weeks ago we started getting three copies of everything, but it seems to have reverted to just two copies again. Can any of you throw any light on what might be going on and how to fix it? Thanks.

This just started happening to me. I stopped gett new cache notifications & new logs posted on caches I own. I sent a trouble ticket to groundspeka.com Sounds similar possibly. How was yours resolved

  11. You must be getting mine! I'm NOT getting notifications. :D

I bet the third set of notifications are mine. I have not been getting mine. A while back they just stopped, then about two months later just started again, now I'm back to not getting them. :D

  12. Anybody out there using the Sony CLIÉ PEG-TG50...

How exactly would a PDA "surf" the internet....Bluetooth to a web enabled cell phone ?

Sorry for all the newbie questions....

    JO

:( I have the Sony CLIE PEG-TH55 which I think is very similar to yours. However, I am in the same boat as you. I am trying to figure out the best way to use what I have and the best software to use to make them interact with one another the best. My equipment is the PDA mentioned above for paperless caching, Garmin eTrex for the trails, a Lowrance iway 500c in the car to get me there and finally a toshiba laptop to act as mission control. I have also installed the following software: EasyGPS and Cachemate. I am still learning how to use this software. Up until now, I have been manually entering waypoints on the Garmin and the Lowrance for each and every cache (takes a lot of time).

  13. For a long time I had only a handheld GPSr. When I finally went paperless I just added a PDA. Definitely the best thing I every did. Oh, and I use GSAK to manage cache info and send it to my PDA and GPSr.

My only regret is that I don't have a GPSr with maps (I'm working on upgrading - a new unit is the only item on my Christmas wish-list to my girlfriend :( ). I'm constantly in fresh/unknown territory and printing/carrying paper maps is time-consuming, aggravating, and last-but-not-least wasteful.

I think I have the same situation. I have been using a PDA (PPC), but I still miss having a map of the area to visual where I am. I am using the yellow garmin etrex.

Any better ideas, maybe to upgrade

  15. I'm a teacher with a budget of $800. I would like to buy 4 or more handheld GPS units that can be used to introduce grade 9 students to GPS. I will most likely use them on short urban hiking trips.

I don't anticipate doing much more than perhaps learning how to read coordinates, mark altitudes, and possibly transfer and plot data to PC.

Someone has recommended the Garmin GPS 60. Do you agree with this advice?

Can you recommend a trustworthy source, preferably here in Canada?

    Thanks

    Teacher in Toronto

What grades are we talking? Mine is in 3rd grade. Would love to introduce the class/teacher to geocaching

  16. If you are hoping to have the students create elevation profiles, you'll want to make sure the units you buy have an altimeter on them--not all gps unit do. Of course, as a workaround, a lot of maps include elevation (although I'm not sure how accuarate they are), so just having the students find the exact waypoint would allow them to be able to get some estimated elevations. Google Earth does elevation plotting (but ask your tech people before you count on using GE in the classroom--my tech guys say it's too much of a resource drain to load it onto more than one computer).

I haven't seen you say anything that would merit the need for any particular unit, other than that. The Garmin GPS 60 is a discontinued model--which may make it hard to find enough units -or may make it easier to find them at discount prices! Does your friend say why they think that model would suit your needs?

The prices Team Taran gave for the yellows (eTrex) and the eTrex Legend arre awesome---I'd jump on those if you could find that kind of price in your area. I personally couldn't justify the extra expense of anything over the Legend series for my classroom when I made my purchase. (Just so you know which units I am familiar with---I started out myself with the Legend, and love it so much we kept ours for guests to use even after we upgraded to the Map60CSx. We also have a Map60CS and a Map76CS).

My students used the Legends to learn how to use GPS, to make maps of some walking trails in our local area, to measure the changing perimeter of several wetlands near us, and to create two earthcaches in a nearby state park. I like that they came with cables to connect to the computer so they could download waypoints (for accuracy sake) and so the can upload tracks back to the computer (handy for the walking path acitivities).

Perhaps you could attend some local events and ask to see everyone's gps units, to become more familiar with various gps units before making the huge money commitment?

  17. Here are my suggestions for enhancements to the geocache web site. A lot of these arise because there are relatively few caches in my country the UAE (currently only 52). These are widely dispersed and my cache hunting ground in very large, encompassing our neighbouring country, Oman and on occasions Qatar, Saudi, Bahrain and Kuwait.

    1. That the “Search Travel Bugs” page shows the Country, as well as the location for the Travel Bug. It’s nice to know which part for the world my bugs are in – the cache name doesn’t really help. Of course I can open the cache Web page to find out but it would be nice to have on the summary page.
    2. The “All Geocaches In Country” page should always have a check box to filter out caches already found. This check box appears randomly, sometimes it is there and other times not – it is very annoying to have to go to a “new Search” to filter out my finds.
    3. I would like to see the “(filter out finds)” option for “List newest in <country>” on the “My Account Details” page. We only have 50 odd caches in the UAE so this is the search usually used here in place of “Search for nearest caches from your home coordinates”
    4. On the “Add/Edit Insta-Notify Subscription” page I would like to see the option “Posted a Note” to the existing ones of
      • Found it
      • Retract Listing
      • Didn't find it
      • Temporarily Disable Listing
      • Archive Enable
      • Listing
      • Unarchive
      • Update Coordinates
      • Publish Listing
      • Needs Maintenance
I am more interested in notes that are posted against a cache than the very rarely used options such as “Retract Listing”.
    5. On the “Add/Edit Insta-Notify Subscription” page I would like to an option added to “Type to watch” to be “all types”. When I am watching an area I would like information about all of the caches in it. The only way I can do this is by creating a notification page for each individual type. This is most annoying especially as we only have a very small number of caches in the entire country.
    6. I would like the limit of 80 km on the “Search for nearest caches from your home coordinates” removed. The search only gives me 26 caches. If the limit was taken off I could more easily see caches in neighbouring countries that I could also go for. The UAE is small and it is easy to visit Oman, Saudi, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait. These all fall within my caching area and it would be very useful to see all of these caches as the result of a single search instead of having to first select an individual country.
    7. On the “All Geocaches” summary page I would like to see “number of finds” and “number of did not finds”. This would give me an idea of how popular a cache was and some sort of indication of how difficult it was to find.
    8. On the “All Geocaches” summary page I would like to see “terrain” and “difficulty”.
    9. On the travel bug page, I would like the photos in the records to “pop up” when I hover the cursor over the icon in the same way that they do on the cache page logs.
    10. I would like to see photos also included in the “pocket queries” results. Often you need the photos in order to find the cache.
    11. I would like to see photos also included in the Geocaching WAP site (which is otherwise excellent). Often you need the photos in order to find the cache.

  18. Well if i can change my display name, PLEASE let me know!

You may want to do it now, while you havent got a whole slew of caches to log. The only problem is that it will make you a new member, other than that Id say do it and start from scratch while its still an easy task for ya to do the swapping.

You could have a new account and all your caches swapped over within 30 minutes...Just predate them, you could even cut and paste the logs.

But you cant swap those Coin and Bug moves you have. Id say if the name you want is worth becoming a new member...Get it while the gettins good, and you dont have abunch of caches and hides to swap. It would be mostly a pain for people that have many finds, hides, all them trackables, (whether owned, moved or discovered) and their reputation in the area...and boy would it screw up their stats page a bit!

See my other posts. Can I just add a new name, then copy all my prevous posts. I dont want to delete since my son wants his name (and we signed him up as premium, which probably statys with that name)

My name will just be basic member until I decide we need 2 premiums..

    Tony

  19.

    Thanks again...I got it

But sometimes software can be rewriten too. Im no pro by all means, just figuring there may be a way to swap a file over or change a name...just doesnt seem like a hard task is all. :o

The problem here is that opposite happened. You used to be able to change your name. But TPTB wanted to add some new feature and found a Commercial Off-The-Shelf product that provided that feature. The problem was that this product didn't allow for users to change their username. So TPTB convinced themselves that noboby really needed to change user names for Geocaching anyways and removed the capability in order to integrated with this new feature.

The problem is I don't really know what this new feature is. Some people think it is the new portal/forum software that so far is only being used by Waymarking. It's possible that the new feature uses the user name to index into a database and doesn't allow this index to change. If so, they could've just added new permanent name to the Geocaching.com database and when accessing the new feature do a lookup of the permanent name based on the user guid or member id that already exists. But instead of developing the glue code to do this mapping, TBTP choose the "easy" way and now are paying for it by having to deal with requests asking to change user names. It may still be possible for them to add a display name that can be changed and use this display name in logs and forum post while keeping a permanent username to use for logging in to GC.com and other Groundspeak sites (and indexing into the new feature).

I like your thinking. I am an engineer(software/systems). I can understand the issue here. But I also believe it can be changed or provide an alternate solutions. Nothing is impossible it may be difficult ot have a big cost/schedule. But lets see if we can make a change.

I started a few months ago with a name I signed up with my son. Now more of the famility is invloved and we want to change to family name, altho my son likes his name. So we might have a team name + his name. Which will probably double my workload ...
