  1. Personally, I have little fear of wild animals. I've had enough close encounters with eastern black bears to know that in most cases they are more afraid of me than I am of them. And when I'm in bear country I make a habit of making my presence known should momma and cubs be along my path. If rabies have been reported in the area, I tend to be very wary of smaller animals. My greatest fear, however, is the deranged drug-head who will not think twice about killing me for the change in my pocket! I will be prepared to at least attempt to defend myself, family, friends and property using whatever force is necessary in an apparent, life-threating situation. And the more people who know it, the better. BTW, I find it noteworthy that in States which have enacted "shall issue" laws (for concealed-carry permits), the violent crime rates decline significantly but go up correspondingly in surrounding State which do not have similar laws. Gee, I wonder why!? ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===

Perhaps a simple link on the homepage just like the "Read the latest cache logs.", and it can dispay at least the current day's worth. But, I'd still be happy if the list was 30 items long instead of 15. ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===

  8. Jeremy, is there any chance of having the "Newest Caches" listing on the homepage lenghtened? It seems that 15 just isn't enough, especially on weekends. New caches don't stay on the list for very long. Perhaps if the list were dynamic, or showed an entire day's worth, or the last 8 hours ... or something like that. TIA. ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===

  10. There are five stages of emotional responses for coping with change: DenialAnger Bargaining Depression Acceptance I think it can safely be said that most people here have successfully passed through them all. 11. Make up this sign and put it a highly visible place inside before you leave your car/truck: "THERE IS NOTHING INSIDE THIS VEHICLE WORTH DYING FOR. I AM ALWAYS ARMED." 13. ... it happens usually for only the first time after I get on the forum. It's not unique to replying, either ... it also does it when I vote in a poll, or rate a thread. I typically come to the forum from the Geocaching home page. It seems to be related to the login process since it says at the top of the page that I am not logged in. Once I hit the back button or navigate my way back to the thread in question, then it has me listed as logged in. Appears to be a forum software bug to me. 14. The greatest discrepacy I encountered was this cache. It was around 200 feet from it's posted coordinates and I found it on my second attempt. I knew it was an ammo can so I just kept expanding my search. I figured I'd allow another hour and if I didn't find it I'd give up and assume it was missing. The cache owner eventually found his mistake. I've found a couple of others that were 35 to 50 feet off and felt that the posted coordinates were in error since others had the same problems. Persistance can sometimes pay off. Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===

  16. When I need to mark a waypoint that can be relied on I always average my position for at least 15 to 20 minutes, sometimes even more. If I am in a wooded area or in a narrow, steep-sided valley or ravine, there is always the chance that multipath errors (caused by signal reflections from the hard objects around you) will skew your position fixes. As the satellites you are receiving move across the sky, these signal reflections will also change. By averaging your position for an extended period of time you are more likely to improve the accuracy by "averaging out" these errors. As Markwell stated, there are differing opinions on just about anything to do with GPS and accuracy. I tend to form a habit of those methods that work best for me. I'm currently using a Garmin GPS-12XL and a GPSmap76. Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===

  23. One thing that will give you this kind of error on the Edit Profile page is if you enter too many characters in one of the fields. Most of these fields have size limits. Try reducing the amount of text you entered and see if the problem goes away. Hope this helps. But, if you can't get to the page to begin with, then that's another problem. Cheers ... Ah-ha! ... that's why I got a ReplayTV!!! Zip through commercials in an instant. Pause live TV to answer the door/telephone/the call of nature/refill the snack bowl. 25. I've had one cache plundered so far and it most likely won't be the last. It was one of three that were placed in highly popular locations and close to trails. I feel certain that this particular cache was stumbled upon by a small game hunter and not, for example, a Park Ranger because the container and it's entire contents were gone, and wrappers were strewn on the ground at the site. I've since revised the cache but still use the original hiding place for an intermediate clue only. Anyway, here's my thoughts on MOC's: an MOC will not prevent accidental finds. The reason I placed these caches within small Parks was to make them available to as many cachers as possible. They are not necessarily easy to find or retrieve, but they are "accessible." My last cache was hidden in a fairly remote location where I doubt it will be discovered unintentionally. This one is in steep terrain and probably will not be very attractive to the casual cacher so, again, making it an MOC would be pointless. Logically, I can see only having an MOC if I felt that some nefarious character was deliberately messing with my own caches or those of others in the area. Therefore, I'm actually kind of curious to see what kinds of unique caches people will devise that can effectively utilize the MOC feature. Cheers ...
