  2. Let's leave the National Parks and Monuments alone. They don't need Geocaching, and Geocaching doesn't need them. Why can't we just enjoy them for what they are? (National Recreation Areas are another matter, and I think the larger ones are much less crowded and contain some unique and less widely-known features.) Regardless, the Parks and Monuments are already well-publicized, over-crowded most times, and have more than enough "natural" allure than all the Geocaching in the world can match. Thanks, and cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
  3. I'm still hoping to meet you on the trail one of these days. And please do keep placing those fabulous caches with the invigorating hikes and the awesome views. Cheers and happy caching ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
  4. I really appreciate the warm and kind sentiments. It's been a lot of fun, with some of the best and most memorable experiences I've ever had. Met some truly unique and interesting people, and developed a few great relationships. Thanks to all of you! Your caches were a major part of what inspired me. I hope the next 100 will be even more rewarding, and I hope to meet more of you along the way. Cheers, and happy caching!!! ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
  5. Brian, it may not be within the area you're interested, but I recently did SFR001 in the western Catskills and can verify this one is still intact. Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
  6. Hi, MtnDave! Please, tell us more. Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
  7. In case anyone is interested, the History Channel has a program entitled "Map Making" this evening at 7:00-8:00pm (EDST) that is very interesting. Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
  8. quote:Originally posted by seeker bp (Team E-Trex):I have made this area worth coming to hunt. The area is deep in history and excellent terrain. Well, SeekerBP ... if I wasn't on the other end of PA I'd sure come to look for them! Perhaps you can try adding a very nice "First Finder's" prize to provide some additional incentive? Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
  9. Seeker BP, you are not obliged to guarantee a successful hunt to anyone! You are the cache hider and all the rights belong to you. I have no problem putting a frown face on my cache logs, and I will spend as much time as I can afford looking for a difficult cache or going back later if necessary, as long as I know the cache is still there and I'm not looking for nothing. There is a cache on my watch list right now that I couldn't find because it wasn't there. I logged it as a "Not Found," the cacher hider has been informed and concedes that it's missing ... and, I intend to go back to sign the logbook when it is restored, in spite of the fact that it is 60+ miles away. I'll work it into a future hunt in or around that same area. Until then I don't consider it a legitimate find. Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
  10. quote:Originally posted by Pharmadude:What do you guys use in the way of ID on your units? It may not be foolproof (neither is a sticker) but Park2 is right. Modifying the "lawyer" start-up screen is a neat idea. Check out the MeMap utility which makes the process very simple. Just make sure you have a back-up copy of the latest Garmin firmware for your particular unit in case the unexpected happens. 11. Urbo, what you describe sounds a lot like the Klez worm that has triggered numerous alerts overnight. Of particular interest: "the worm has the ability to spoof the From: field (often set to an address found on the victim machine)" Because of this you won't know where it's coming from unless you examine the full message header. 12. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: Don't speak too quickly, Hawk-eye! Rich in NEPA dropped one of your tags into the "Ay Caramba!!" cache in Jersey, and I snagged it today! Very nicely done, as are Rich's magnets and other goodies. Howdy, BP! Thanks for the compliment. I think you'll find quite a few of Hawk-Eyes fine wares scattered around north Jersey! Glad to see you made it to "Ay Caramba" today. Miserable weather, though. I thought for sure I was going to bump into you on Tuesday. That's a nice hunt the Dodger has there. Had me going in circles a couple of times, but it was loads of fun. Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===

  22. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z:I'll have to practice and concentrate on pedaling in circles, something which I don't instinctively do. Like most other physical activities, it takes mental concentration from the beginning until you develop an automatic "muscle memory" for the motion. I don't think you can get pedaling on the trails as smooth as you could on pavement. I've seen a couple of different schools of thought on the technique. Ideally, you want to apply power to the cranks with both legs evenly throughout the entire revolution. This is much easier on smooth terrain. Trust me! 24. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z:My question is... should I practice pedaling so that it's smooth? Maybe my seat height is incorrect. Maybe the slight bounce is not something to worry about. Jamie, I do not experience the bouncing you talk about, which leads me to suspect perhaps a seat height problem. Don't forget that there will be some sag in the seatpost when you are sitting on it. If you set up your height unloaded, you may want to check it while you are seated normally. Also, if your seatpost relies on elastomers for compression, they may be old and worn out. (I replaced the elastomers in my original RockShox seatpost with the titanium spring from a broken USE seatpost.) If this doesn't help, I suppose it's possible that you have poor pedaling technique. Someone else may be able to offer a solution here. In my case I've always had my feet attached to my pedals, even when road cycling years ago with toe clips and straps, so the "pedaling in circles" motion is second nature. Cheers ... ~Rich in NEPA~ === A man with a GPS receiver knows where he is; a man with two GPS receivers is never sure. ===
