  1. Those are the best!! The three I have planned are all abandoned without any burials for about a hundred years.
  2. We enjoy them. It's fun to explore cemeteries especially if the hider has done some research and can lead us on a tour. I plan on starting my own series someday. It will take awhile because I want everyone to enjoy it.
  3. It's not that bad at all. I had the same fears when we started. It turns out the kids just LOVE rummaging through the containers. It doesn't matter what it contains. Now they hardly trade at all. Unless something cathes their eye. They also enjoy choosing what to leave. It teaches them a lesson in sharing that we've seen them practice at home. So let them trade away and choose their own trade items. Your whole family will have a blast!
  4. I can't decide whether to be appalled at the hiders laziness or impressed with his efficiency?
  5. I totally agree. We found a cemetery cache which was a plastic skoal can. The log was actually a satellite bill that actually had "Official Log" written on the back. It wasn't in a baggie or anything. Soaking wet. It was one of our first few finds and I almost quit geocaching that day. I didn't want to drag my family around searching for garbage!
  6. Worldcaching sent me some as a door prize for my event and everybody loved them. They're a lot easier to carry than brochures and work great for introducing people to the game.
  7. Another Arkansas Geocacher!! Chuck will not budge. Trust me. She adheres to that "guideline" as if the world will meet a cataclysmic end if it's broken (even though it's not a rule). Just move the caches. An additional 10ft bushwhack won't make any difference. We're planning a trip to Russellville sometime in the next couple of months to get ORR's "Main Streeet" cache. I look forward to hunting yours while we're there.
  8. I'd go for it! Your cache location sounds amazing. I think other cachers would really enjoy hunting it. I only wish they had an area like that around where we live. Ignore the "psychic". My wife cooked mexican casserole for dinner the night my daughters bunny died for no reason. We still eat casserole and I'm happy to report no further casualties! Seriously, it sounds like a really neat cache location that everyone would enjoy.
  9. We usually follow three rules for logging a DNF: 1. If we couldn't locate the cache and suspect something may be wrong like the cache may have been muggled. 2. We couldn't find it due to our error and won't return for some time. 3. We couldn't find it for some reason which involves a really good story. We'll log those even if we plan to return the next day. Following those rules you should log a DNF on the first cache you mentioned if you won't be back real soon and not on the multi because you're still working on it. I would mention that it took a couple (or however many) days to do. TB's and geocoins aren't trade items even though some cachers treat them like they are. Just take one or leave one. When you trade swag always trade up or even. Signature items are left there for other cachers to trade for. We leave some and hope other cachers would want them. Unless they're placed in the baggie with the log book. Then we leave them just in case or read the log to see what the cacher who left it intended. I hope that helps. We're still hammering out some of this stuff ourselves.
  10. I just finished watching the video and it was great! They really captured what geocaching is all about. Thank you for sharing the link.
  11. They look really cool. I hope some make it out our way!
  12. Just be patient. Being a father I know what it is like to worry about my kids. Your father is only looking out for you. When you get the chance talk to your Dad and explain how much you love geocaching and you will see him willing to talk. mtn-man is right. it would be better to discuss this with him than with anyone here, I know if my son posted a question like this I would ground him for awhile.
  13. Digitalfish is a bay area geocacher who leaves numbered glass fish "digifish" as calling cards. They can be tracked here: digifish I was so curious I had to look it up. He's also ranked #29 in finds.
  14. My wife was just as uneasy about it when I first started. She warmed up slowly especially when she saw how much fun the kids were having. Now we all go together and have a blast. Geocaching is really great family time together. Not to mention all the really great destinations you'll discover. Just go for it. It won't take many finds and she'll be wanting her own GPSr.
  15. The second one is not just a smaller version of the first. I touched it up a little to improve the visibility of the lettering...or, at least that is what I was trying to do. I know what it looks like to me, but sometimes it looks different to the unbiased eye. If you see anything you think needs to be changed, I'll see what I can do. When you asked for mountains without snowcaps I didn't realize how much the snow-capped ones dominated my database. It was a unique request in that respect. Thank you so much! It is awesome. You did fantastic job and we're thrilled. We just can't thank you enough for all your hardwork.
  16. We use the 210 and have had no problems with it. I've never used a Garmin but they are the most popular. I do know that I left my GPSr on top of the car after a cache and didn't notice until i heard it bounce off the trunk at 55mph. I saw it bounce down the road and felt sick! Went back to retrieve the remains and it was fine!! Still using it.
  17. Hey Sean! I loved your blog. Very inspirational. Now I feel lazy I left a comment. These forums need people like you.
  18. When the parking lot is for one store ask the manager. If it is a mall with several stores just ask the manager of any of them who they lease the property from. That should get you started in the right direction. Be sure to at least carry a brochure to explain what geocaching is. I got permission for several that way (just couldn't bring myself to place them). Most managers give you the geo-what? look. Explain the game and be sure to include CITO so they understand that cachers have a positive impact on the places they visit. Well thats my .02
  19. We use Google Earth as a tool for scouting cache locations that we are unfamiliar with and it has helped a lot. I know the coordinates aren't very accurate.
  20. I agree. There's no shame in logging a DNF. It alerts other cachers to probable problems with too many muggles. I really don't care for micros that much but I do hunt them from time to time. I still remember one placed under a newspaper machine two feet from a Wal-Mart Supercenter entrance. That was fun! I know cachers that filter out every cache but 1 star micros when they travel. To me that sounds DULL! But to them seeing their numbers is the excitement. That being said I would never jeopardize a cache because I didn't like the placement. It would be wrong. That's just IMHO.
  21. Cybret is right. It's a game. Everyone plays it their own way. It's your cache, do whatever you want. Personally I wouldn't have claimed a find. Some of my best logs were DNF's. For us it's all about playing while for others they don't get the enjoyment without the smilie. It doesn't matter either way. Although I did battle a snake which was coiled up next to a cache one time. But another time one drove me away Reptiles= 1 OEnavigator= 1 The summer is not over yet!
  22. You should post this mission on the local geocaching websites: TAAG AGA It's a little too far North for me to do it. Good luck!
  23. I really hate to ask as it seems you're overwhelmed but I give up. I have tried to make my own avitar and failed. So I ask the pros. I've been trying to create something with a mountain background ( no snowcaps) and a rose compass. We are a family of five who really enjoy hiking as well as geocaching. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  24. That would be fantastic! And thank you for offering to do this for the geocaching community. I was looking into starting a local group for the few cachers around my neck of the woods to try to bring more people into the sport. I looked at the Yahoo sites but it wasn't quite what I was looking for. Your offer seems perfect. I hope you go ahead with it.
