  1. Hello,

I just connected my Rino 530 HCx to check for any updates and it said the following is "available": gps chipset type b region file. does anyone know what that is and or if it is necessary? reccomended? I'm not sure if I should or not and can't find anything on Garmin's site about what exactly it is?

    Thnaks

  2. Here's what I got back from Garmin, Just in case anyone else searches for this or needs to know? A+++ customer service from them again, as usual, Garmin, you ROCK!

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I will be happy to assist you with your questions about the Rino 530HCx and the micro sd card capacity today, John.

The unit originally came out compatible with a 2GB micro sd card. Since then we have developed software for the 530HCx that will allow the unit to read a 4GB micro SDHC card.

If your software version is 2.80 or 2.90 you have the capacity for a 4gb card. If your software is not at this level you can update it by running webupdater a free download from our site.

Here is how to check you software on the Rino 530HCx:

Main Menu > System > At the top of the page is an x and to the left of it a sheet of paper > Highlight the paper and press enter > choose > Software Version.

Here is a link to webupdater:

    Please respond for further assistance.

  3. Hello,

Just wondering if anybody might be able to help me out? I just bought a pair of Rino 530HCx's. I am looking for a memory card, Micro SD and can't find ANY information on if they are compatable with micro Sd HC (High Capacity) and what is the max size memory card they will recognize?

Anyone know the correct answer to either of these two questions?

    Thanks,

    biGjOhn

  4. I don't know the answer to your question BUT... in order for your unit to know where his unit is, I suspect that he must transmit the signal that sends the coords. I highly doubt that the Rino is continually transmitting the coordinates of its' own accord -- it would be a terrible battery drain.

Just a guess on my part though.

Thanks for the scoop... I too am sure that they don't continually broadcast but as I understand it, what little I do understand about them at least, you have to "link them" so that when you talk to each other on the walkie talkie function, they also send each other their coordinates, so you can see where each other are on the GPS screen.

My question is, once we are "linked". Can I see his position when I key up my mic. and transmitt to him or is it ONLY a one way transmission and only sends the coords of the transmitting person to the other guy? or, is it two way, like a roger beep and transmitts back to the originating unit?

I'll keep looking, thanks for any and all help.

  5. Hello all,

this is probably a VERY simple answer but I can't find it with search. Search will not let me search "rino" says words have to have 5 letters... WTF?, so how would one search for just threads pertaining to Rino then? I tried "Garmin+Rino" and came up with every topic under the sun that had the word "Garmin" in it...?

Anyway, I also went to Garmin.com and downloaded the PDF manual for the 530Hcx and can't find the answer in there either??? Please help.

My question is, when hiking & camping If I have a pair of Rino's, one for me & one for my aging father, can I initiate seeing where he is by keying up the mic. or does he have to initiate and key his mic. to send me his position? The reason I ask is that the main reason for getting these would be to be able to know where he is if something happened to him. If he was incapacitated, I could key my mic., get his position and go to help him. (theoretically).

Is that how these work, or would he have to broadcast for me to see his current position?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

  6. Anyone with any info. or links to info. on the Garmin traffic recievers? I got my car broken into and someone stole mine that came with my NuVi - 660. Garmin was kind enough to send me a power cable to replace it but it doesn't have the FM reciever... I'm looking to get one but not sure which? Looking for info. / input for buying one online, eBay etc. in regards to the "lifetime" or fee based subscription etc. Anyone know about that stuff?

    Thanks

  7. I'm trying to get some data about these GTM20's as well. I just got off of the phone with Garmin and the person I spoke with was GREAT! He said that the $214 one is "Advertisment free". It comes with a 15 month subscription, then you have to buy the lifetime sub later, after the 15 months are up. But the $119 one has ads that pop up for local merchants (only when the car is stopped, say at a light). They go away as soon as the car moves. So, it is cheaper cuz it is advertisement based... You can get one of those through a Garmin authorized retailer for about $80. He said that Garmin will sell them but at FULL retail as to not undercut their distributors... And he recomended Amazon.

What I want to know is If I buy one from eBay or used etc. does it come with the free (ad based) lifetime traffic or do i have to register it as a NIB purchaser etc.? Any one have any data or links to data on these GTM 20's? I tried searching but it won't me search for any words shorter than 5 letters! G-T-M and 20.... hard to make them bigger, LOL.

  8. Hello,

I have a Navtech Maptech mapping program that let’s me connect my GPS unit to my laptop and navigate on the big laptop screen, I.E. like for a passenger in the car or on an airplane etc. Does anyone know if I can do it with my Mapsource? I have City nav, US Topo etc. too… I just would like to be able to link the GPS to the laptop and view the program on the laptop, like a Garmin 20 deal…?

    Thanks,

    biGjOhn

  9. I just had to post to share my AWESOME experience with Garmin's Customer Service. Unfortunately my car got broken into and the jackass stole the power cord & mount to my NuVi 660. The good one with the FM traffic receiver in it! Luckily I didn’t leave the Unit itself in the car! So I called Garmin to find out about replacing it and they sent me a whole new mount & power cord AT NO CHARGE! Granted it wasn’t the FM receiver one but wholly cow, how cool is that! I already have an eTrex Vista cx, GPS Map 60 Csx & the Nuvi but I will continue to buy Garmin products from now on with service like that!

    TWO BIG THUMBS UP!

  10. Hello,

I've been trying to figure out a way to do this and I'm sure someone has figured it out? Seems like something LOTS of people would want to do, I just can't figure out how? What I am trying to do is be able to mark out certain plots of land, forexample private land within the National forrest. I can see it on Mapsource, so could make a route around it or track etc. but then want to be able to transfer that to my MAP 60 CSX so that when I am in the field, I can see the borders / boundaries to make sure I don't tresspass... does anyone know a good way to do this?

Certainly. As you hinted at, in MapSource use the Tools/Track Draw utility to create a track that makes a polygon around your parcel or other boundary. Save this as a .gpx file and upload this "saved track" to your 60CSx. you can store 20 saved tracks of this type with 500 track points each. You can assign colors and name them, and view them on the map screen by checking the box "Show on Map".

Ah Ha, thanks. I will give that a try. I tried saving them as "routes" but couldn't make them appear on my screen.

    thanks,

    biGjOhn

I've seen this done with mapsco map segments. I think the trick was to make a transparent overlay with the boundaries drawn in. So you "see through" the overlay other than the labels and lines drawn on it.

If I am remembering correctly then perhaps this will give you something to go on.

Thanks for the reply... Unfortunately I'm not real savvy with the map products "mapsco" etc. In fact, I don't know anything about them or transparrent overlays etc. way over my head. I was just hoping there was some EASY way I could mark out the private land from Nat'l forrest on my mapsource and transfer it to my GPS unit to keep myself out of trouble? Would be really cool if they added a "highlight marker" tool... So we could draw with it in mapsource and then see it out in the field...

Also, does anyone know how I can connect my GPS to my laptop and use the big screen for navigating when in the car? I.E. have the passenger working the laptop but with the detail on the big laptop screen?

    thanks,

    biGjOhn

  14. Hello,

just got my City Nav v.8, unlocked and installed on my 60Csx. Just curious, when I send a mapset in CN to my unit it wipes off my Topo map set? There are many times when I will want both my Topo AND my CN maps on my unit. Is there a way to do this?

If not, I read a thread that US Topo 2008 is routable with a software produt download for like $6? Metro route or something? Is that rue? At least that would let me route & have my Topo too!

    thanks,

    biGjOhn

  15. Probably a silly question but I have searched and I can't figure this out? I just bought, Installed & unlocked City Navigator V.8. I sent a group of maps to my 60Csx too, it all worked but...

... I want to try auto routing and there is no "Addresses Icon" on my GPSr? The manual says it will only be there if I purchase "opptional detailed mapping software"... so I should have it with CN, right?

Anyone know how I can activate my addresses icon?

    thnaks,

    biGjOhn

***NEVERMIND *** I FIGURED IT OUT... The map set that I sent to my unit was US Topo NOT Cn. I forgot to change the maps source in MAp source before selecting and sending them to my unit...

    THANKS

  16. At the risk of getting blasted with screams of “USE The SEARCH BUTTON” I will post this anyway but with this disclaimer… I have searched some and can’t find what I’m looking for and am running out of time before Crimas! I’m just looking for someone who maybe has already done the research and doesn’t mind sharing? If that’s not you, then please just kindly move on to the next post, no need to flame me, thank you…

Here’s the quick Skinny… Looking for an automotive GPSr for my elderly mother for Crimas. Had a great deal on a Street Pilot 530 from Cabelas for $179 but they sold out, they just notified me, none left! YIKES! So I have to hurry. She is not techno-inclined so here is what I’m thinking would be good criteria for her, please add or delete if you wish?

    • Big screen, for ease of viewing while driving.

    • Voice prompts, so she doesn’t have to look at it much while driving, it will tell her when & where to turn etc.

    • Touch screen, so she doesn’t have to fumble for buttons…

    • Some kind of mount so it’s not loose on the seat etc…

    • And ease of use for a 65+ year old woman… I don’t think that she will operate it while moving but can plot her destination before leaving the house or parking lot and or pull over if she needs to do any programming while on the road… she won’t even talk on her cell phone while driving. So it as to have VERY simple menu’s & features.

    • She won’t need any additional features like Bluetooth, MP3 etc…

    • Would also be nice if it had a battery so she could take it with her in her purse too if she wanted to?

    • And up date / up load maps too. She travels to Europe occasionally but doubt she would take a big car unit? She could borrow one of my handhelds…

Now, is there anything like that for around $200 on sale anywhere? Any good deals or good sales out there?

    Thanks in advance,

    biGjOhn

  17. All of this is true unless you have a "hack" to break the unlock code and I don't believe anyone does yet, or else they won't admit it online.

Thanks again for the scoop... I don't have a hack for the unlock codes, so if I do go that route, No Cn for my hockey puck... wish I had a hack, but then again it's business and Garmin needs their rice & beans too...

If it were my business, I wouldn't want someone hacking me!

    thanks for the data,

    biGjOhn

  18. Put your phrase in quotation marks when searching. In other words, type "garmin USB GPS 18" in the search box, not just garmin USB GPS 18. You'll pull up several posts, including the ones in this thread. :(

    Ah HA! Great, thank you!

  19. So in a nutshell, does the Garmin USB GPSr 18 require an unlock code?

Yes, the gps18 uses one of the two unlocks for V7 or V8. I would assume with the policy change with the 2008 or 2008NT version you would only get the unlock for the gps18.

A few years back when I was using an etrex LegendC I decided to buy a gps18 with city select V7 and use the additional unlock on the legendC. I have only used that gps18 a couple times, it's really pointless since you can use your garmin handheld in the same manner(hooked to PC) and still have the handhelds screen.

basically buying the gps18 I ended up with a really fancy refrigerator magnet(it's been stuck to side of fridge for at least a year). yes I did get to use the second unlock for the legendC, but lost out on the first unlock with a gps device I'm probably never going to use(the gps18).

Ah ha, that makes good sense, thanks. I have enough "fridge magnets" LOL. and like you say, I can still use either of my handheld GPS's instead of the stand alone GPS18...

  20. Hey, now that I think about it, are you sure about the Garmin USB GPS 18 not even appearing on my screen w/o unlock code? What if I got the unit from eBay w/o software at all and just used it with my MapSource or US Topo or Metro guide which don’t require unlock codes? Won’t it still show up and track etc. with those? If so, why wouldn’t it show up if I switched the map view to City Nav then? Hmmmmm?
