Cache Logs, In The Style Of...
Firth of Forth replied to wildlifewriter's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I'd just like to say what a brilliant and very funny thread. There are obviously some very talented writers out there. It makes sense that you are all journalists when you're not caching. -
I'm sure that you will find a way!!
-
Gee, I'm getting embarrassed now!
-
Done it. Thanks Stuey!
-
If anyone has tried Anglamarken, which can be played here, can they tell me how to save the screenshot of the final cache to log onto the cache page?? Tried it twice now without success.
-
Certainly. You have a good choice of caches within walking distance of Waverley station. Can't guarantee the weather of course, so you may still need a rainjacket! If it was me, I'd rather do the caching than the shopping.... Nearest is probably Crag & Tail Greyfriar's Bobby is also within striking distance. There are two easy webcams if you can find someone to take your picture: Edinburgh Live! and Wolfing it in the West End. The former is on Princes Street, and the latter is in Rose Street, just behind Princes Street. There are two multis along the Royal Mile or High Street: Not Edinburgh's Royal Mile and Edinburgh's Royal Mile. The latter starts at the Castle esplanade and the former continues down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament where you can also do Holyrood Horror?. Athens of the North is also within your grasp on top of Calton Hill. That should keep you pretty busy!!

Hear Hear!! Brian, don't let any of this debate put you off carrying on with COTM next year!
-
I don't think anyone has suggested that your logs haven't been honest, and I hope that you don't feel that anyone is criticising you. Each to their own way of caching; it should not matter if the game is interpreted differently by different cachers. I don't cache at 2am (I would rather sleep), but I'm not going to criticise you for doing so!!

Steely determination or madness?? He did it by bike as well!
-
Poor Brian!! Not another difference of opinion to spoil his wonderful league tables. However, IF all the top scorers on the tables are playing a different version of the game, it kinda makes a mockery of it. It has made me ponder whether I will enter my figures again. I would like to add that I have nothing against others doing things differently. IMHO the satisfaction of geocaching comes from what one does individually rather than in competition with others.

Roolku is back in action (in the UK)! There will be no chance of any FTFs for the rest of us now! Met up with him last night to pass on a TB and certificate - he didn't seem in any hurry to bag his 200th cache, but clearly a FTF was too good an opportunity for him to pass up. Congratulations Robert. It was only in August he claimed his 100th at the 1st SGDO, so the 300th will not be far away.

Only travel bugs MOVED from one cache to another count for COTM points. So are people distinguishing between those TBs that they have moved on, and those that they have just 'seen', when they send their stats to Deego? I doubt it! There's obviously a difference of opinion about this and, as always, different cachers will do things in different ways. I think that I will probably stick to logging only TBs that I pick up. Sorry to have possibly stirred up a hornet's nest!
-
I have done it once myself, but only after I discovered that other people were doing it. On my GCOM stats I only counted TBs I actually picked up and moved elsewhere. There could be a good reason, ie you want to log that you had it, but you know that there is no way that you can do anything useful with it for the forseeable future, so you leave it. The practice also seems to be commonplace at Events. I'm just surprised, that's all; I wasn't aware of cachers doing this. Maybe everyone has been, and I've just been missing out!? So, if you visit a TB hotel and there are half a dozen TBs in it, do you take all the ID numbers? No wonder I haven't been able to get to the top of the COTM table! Snaik gave me a Jeep TB at the last SGDO. I guess that everyone who attended the event could have logged it then. They will be sorely disappointed.

Do people really do this on a regular basis?? It's news to me. It doesn't seem quite right somehow.

Try these: Four Windows Anglamarken, which can be played here

Good News For Uk Cachers....
Firth of Forth replied to Eckington's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Excellent news! Has Highland Nick had a hand in this I wonder? Lots more places for him to hide caches now, to add to the 24 he already has! Could this help with 2202's idea of combining skiing and caching? -
Except that to retrieve 'The Other Side of Edinburgh' involves going off the path and it can be a bit muddy - some people have commented on it in their logs. Hope you have a successful lunch break.
-
Now I wonder who that could be???? Boy am I gonna enjoy extracting my revenge on you beggers!!! Just you wait and see I have learned exactly what kind of caches each of my fellow Scots hate....not that I would set a cache to deliberately wind anyone up you understand NO NO ... I would never do that! But all in good time...all in good time (how do you do a witch's cackle here ??) Seriously LL, I think it is good advice to have a fair number of caches bagged before you set any of your own....most first time placers of caches who have just started seem to have a high incidence of their caches muggled! But of course the final decision is yours....as one replier said (who has just been struck off my Xmas list btw ) you don't need to bag hundreds before placing one of your own (though in my very very humble opinion ... it helps ....hopefully!!!) Ullium. Bill, I'm sure that your first cache will be a humdinger, and I very much look forward to finding it! I like all kinds of caches, so any kind will do for me!

It's always nice to see newcomers to the sport getting enthusiastic about it. It's true that there has been a spurt of puzzle caches in the Fife/Perthshire area lately; with each successive one trying to outdo the last. As PPs have said, it can become somewhat frustrating if more than one journey to the area is required, although there is also an argument for this making a cache more of a challenge too. The general advice here on the Forums is often to set the kind of cache(s) that you like to do yourself. There is certainly no requirement to do a puzzle cache just because others are; in fact a nice straightforward cache with a decent walk would make a nice change at the moment! The other sound bit of advice is to find a good number of caches before setting one yourself; there has even been a proposal that new cachers should be required to find at least 10 caches before setting one of their own. I see that you have 4 caches under your belt so far, and I think your own caches are much more likely to be successful if you find a good range of caches first before hiding one, although you don't have to go to extremes like one notable Scottish cacher ( )and wait until you have done more than 200! Welcome to the addictive pasttime.

Cache Location Maps
Firth of Forth replied to harrogate hunters's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
The g.com maps are here, just zoom in and then click identify to locate cache names. -
An excellent idea! And not only would we have mountain resuce on hadn, but skil patrol as well!! I was already thinking about a couple of days in Aviemore in the Feb holiday. Need to maintain the progress I made earlier this year, and my daughter should get some practice in before her school ski trip in March.

Placing a TB in a central London cache is a wee bit problematic since most of them are virtuals or micros. However, there is a good physical one in Regent's Park called Cara's College Cache. It has proved elusive to some cachers, so be sure to check out a helpful log in March.
