  1. There is a very good airport bus service, from outside the arrivals terminal to Waverley Station, just by Princes Street. The return fare is no more than around £4-£5 (cant remember exactly). Its a quick, reliable and inexpensive way to get into town. In contrast, a taxi from my house in North Edinburgh to the airport would cost around £16. A car in the centre of Edinburgh is a hindrance; there are very good bus routes, and plenty of caches within walking distance of the city centre. Edinburgh is a great city for walking around. The different levels that the city is built on can be a little confusing, so just make sure that you have a good street map.
  2. That would be great Seasider! This 'business trip' is getting better and better!
  3. Congratulations to Allieballie for reaching her 300th cache at Scotland's First CITO event today, and to Highland Nick for claiming his 200th cache a few days ago at Hillockhead Cache. These are both fantastic achievements: for Allieballie because she caches with the Wee Man and for Highland Nick because caches are pretty thin on the ground in the Highlands.
  4. I'm looking forward to a first visit to Dublin. This is a great excuse to visit a city that I have always wanted to go to. Hopefully a weekend will be long enough to 'clear' the city. I will attend the Irish bit of it only as Im flying from Edinburgh. Is the event page for this part of the event still to be finalised, or have I missed it?
  5. Sorry - it was in an earlier post on this thread, but a bit obscure perhaps. The date is June 16th. Just waiting on a suggestion for the venue now.
  6. I guess it was more of a career break rather than a retirement.
  7. Well thats just silly and asking for confusion...it should be stopped at once! Try reading verbatim reports of spoken language, such as witness statements, some of which I'm having to digest at this moment. It's not an easy or pleasant task.
  8. Update - train ticket booked - will be arriving at 2pm, so plenty of time for some caching before a pub meet in the evening. I'm looking forward to it!
  9. Now, you see I don't know what OP means, but I'm willing to learn. Does it really matter if there is a loose thread drift? (gnoring Pharisee's wise advice to steer clear of posting after consumption of alcohol)
  10. but Why ???? If things sound the same they should be writ the same...anything else is just pretensious and elitest nonsense. Chris I DO hope you're taking the piss? Please tell me that writing English correctly is not 'nonsense'. Nope not extracting the urine - if someone could explain to me the logic of having 3 words that sound the same spelt differently then I might change my opinion. Otherwise I can see no reason for it. And don't say "its right" - its only right because someone made it up, it can be unmade just as easily. And don't say "its what the dictionary says" as the dictionary is just another book, if you follow that logic Mein Kampf, The Bible and The Lord of the Rings are all guides to how to live your life Chris The logic is simple - the three words mean completely different things. Whether people care about this fact in everyday written English on forums and in logs is another matter; and I guess that that is the loose connection to geocaching.
  11. Congratulations P & T!! Remind me to buy you both a drink in Manchester in June, because you will probably have reached 1000 by then!
  12. Ok Tony, you just have to follow me to the cache now! Thanks for offering to organise a drinkies venue Malcolm.
  13. Looking forward to it Tony. I even have dispensation from Pengy & Tigger to find Spectrum Violet!
  14. I agree absolutely; somehow it keeps getting dragged up again. Good to hear that you are coming to Edinburgh, which has wide range of very good caches. I'm sure that you will enjoy them. Look at Haggis Hunter's profile for bookmark lists suggested cache trails.
  15. Thanks. I would have filed the log on the 7th of December last year if I'd been allowed to by the owner. but the rules of virtuals are very clear that it's not legal to file a find without confirmation from the owner that the find has been correctly reported. The GC.com guidelines state: They also say: I went to considerable time and trouble to comply with the requirements and eventually, after very long delays, the owner relented and fell into compliance with the obligation to respond to one (only!) of my inquiries. It's a good virtual cache and one which I'd recommend to anyone who has a half hour or so to spare in that part of Edinburgh. It's also a very good example of why there is sometimes a case to be made for a virtual instead of a traditional cache. I'm pleased that The Forester enjoyed this virtual cache. It's a shame that he has to, yet again, bring into the public domain his differences with me. I have not accepted private emails from him since the end of last year, and he knows this, and those of you who are regular readers of this forum will understand why. So, unless he unchecks the box "I want to send my email address along with this message" when he sends a message through g.com, his message will be rejected. I have informed him of this. The only email claim for this virtual that I received was in February, and I immediately responded and told him to log his find. I did not know why he chose not to, and having reminded him, the log is now done. I can only presume that any other emails he sent to claim his find included his own email address.
  16. You also did this virtual cache, emailed to claim your find in February, were given permission to claim the find and never logged it on the cache page. Happily, the find is now logged.
  17. You also did this virtual cache, emailed to claim your find in February, were given permission to claim the find and never logged it on the cache page.
  18. After many months, the mystery is finally solved! As is often the case, the cacher(s) were preoccupied by more pressing matters. I received this log today. Fortunately, the cachers are now active again and have logged th TB out of the cache. Still don't know what TKTG means though Topic closed again.
  19. Ah, now, you are on my specialist subject .... Also available to ferry around Manchester area during the day as I'm still on the Rock and Roll. Malcolm - The Powerbook Fanatic Great! I'll let you choose the pub then! Having never been to Manchester, I need the locals to decide upon a suitable venue. Thanks for the offer of transport too. I will be in touch nearer the time, as I'm not sure yet what time I will be arriving.
  20. Any of you who have read the write up of the Scottish Geocachers' event on Bute may be forgiven for wondering about this line: "Sorry Wildlifewriter, but I just couldn't work out how to include money, sex or violence into my account of the weekend." After his visit to Scotland to attend the SGDO - Ratho Park, Wildlifewriter was unanimously nominated to do the write up for it. And very amusing it was too! What you won't know is that he also wrote an even funnier alternative account for the Scottish forum (see how many cachers' names you can spot), which goes like this: "The problem with geocaching (and birdwatching, and golf, and all the other things I write about) is that - unless you're actually involved - it's so BORING. What our hobby needs is a bit of interest: money, sex, violence and a hint of danger. Imagine if Ian Fleming were writing about it... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- James Bond signed the log, and returned the cache to its hiding place. The mission was nearly complete. Slipping Q-branch's latest marvel – a miniaturised Snaik GPS receiver – into the pocket of an immaculately tailored dinner jacket, he paused to wipe a speck of Lothian mud from his hand-lasted Pooter brogues. From behind him, came a very faint click. Bond spun into a crouch and his compact Ullium nine-millimetre automatic spat twice. A grey squirrel twitched and went down, falling into the leaf litter with a soft thud. He straightened: “Fasht, my friend – but not quite fasht enough...” Turning, he slid behind the steering wheel and soon the Borthwick Continental GT was heading citywards, the snarl of its race-tuned twelve-cylinder engine echoing across the Water of Leith. The woman in the passenger's seat crossed her legs, causing the hem of her Allieballie designer dress to ride up and reveal the merest hint of pink lace beneath. Bond took in the soft curves of her body with an appreciative eye. “ Sho tell me, Ms... Anderson – what do you like to do when you're not geocaching?”
  21. Unfortunately, The Forester did not canvass me, even though my caches are closest to where the event was proposed. I have received no emails from him through g.com about it. "Let's not let one malign or indifferent individual hold us back." This event will be clearing up on my doorstep. Please go everyone!
  22. On a lighter note, a write up of the Scottish Geocachers' Weekend Event on the Isle of Bute is now available at www.geocachingtoday.com here.
