  1. The 3d features require DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data. The only ways to get DEM data is a T model or buy a Garmin Topo Map. No one has been able to figure out how to add the DEM data to the maps. Garmin won't reveal thier secerts. Also, if you have DEM data, you can click anywhere and get a fairly accurate elvation. For trails, My Trails has quite a bit of trails in NJ. If a trail is not in My Trails, you can GPS it or trace it in GoogleEarth (or some other program) and I can add it to My Trails. My Trails is a transparent overlay so it will work on top of any map on your GPS.
  2. Its been answered numerous times on this forum
  3. If Mthermit was correct, it would not have taken 45 minutes to load the maps on the GPS. It sounds like you sent both maps but City Navigator is not unlocked for that GPS. Was your message something like unable to unlock maps? Did you send CN 2009 or CN 2010? In MapSource, Contrl U will bring up the unlock status. What is it saying?
  4. The latest firmware made the problem worse. I used to be able to get it to load without locking up by clearing all waypoints before loading a new PQ. With the new firmware, the GPS locks up when you try to clear the waypoints. One extremly important thing to remember is if it locks up on you when you load, you need to reload your PQ onto your GPS.
  5. I think REI has an outstanding satification guarentee. That is why I buy my GPSs there evem if it is more expensive. They will honor stuff longer than the manfucature warenty. When my CO fell apart after it had been discontnnied, REI refunded my money and I bought a 550T. What I wanted was to exchnage it for a new CO, but that was not possible. In hindsight, I am glad they no longer had the CO. While I would not do as the OP described, if I pay over 600 for something and it does not last as long as I think it should, I will take it back to REI
  6. No you need to rename it AFTER you compile and send it to your GPS. My understanding is the 62 enables and disables maps based on the img files. Read these: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-mapsource/ http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/ http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-change-which-map-is-displayed-on-a-garmin-gps/
  7. Get City Navigator (you can also get the updates so you get a new version 4 times a year). Send all of it to your card and rename \garmin\gmapsupp.img City Navigator.img The entire CN (including Canada and other plavces) is 153 segments. I would say other than not being routable, the gpsfiledepot maps are generally better than the Garmin maps. They generally are made from higher resolution elevation and hydrology data. Most of the Gpsfiledepot topo maps do not have trails. So make sure you also download and install My Trails (I make it). It is a transparent overlay and has 10s of thousands of trails in the NE. You can use profiles to switch back and forth between topo and City Navigator. My Trails displays on top of CN and topo maps. But City Navigator covers topo maps. So to see the topo maps, your recreation profile will need to disable CN.
  8. City Navigator generally is really good for all the roads a passenger vehicle can go on. But parks tend to have lots of stuff missing or wrong. Your best bet is to buy City Navigator on a DVD and a blank card. Get a topo map and My Trails from www.gpsfiledepot.com Then you can load all the maps onto your gps using your computer. If you get the CN card, you cannot add additional maps to the card. So if you want to be able to switch between topo and City Navigator on your GPS, you need to get the DVD. You said you are not tech savy. Here are some tutorial on how you would load and use the maps so you can see if its too complicated for you: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-mapsource/ http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/ http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-change-which-map-is-displayed-on-a-garmin-gps/ My Trails (which I make) has lots of unpaved roads that are not on City Navigator. For example, it has the Allegeheny national FOrest's unpaved roads and most of them are not in City Navigator.
  9. I think you are confused on what a profile is. Profiles quickly change the settings to optimize the GPS for what you are using it for. So switching to a profile is not going to address the problem unless the profile is optimized for what you are using the GPS for. So first switch to your geocaching profile and modify the settings and screens to how you want the GPS to work when you are caching. Then switch to the recreation profile and modify the settings and screens to how you want the GPS to work when you are navigating to a waypoint. Do NOT have the geocaching dashboards active in your recreation profile. Once you have the settings set up for the profiles, you just switch profiles when you want to switch from caching to waypoint. Then your GPS is customized for its current use.
  10. It depends on what you mean by: When the Topo is removed, the CN map works fine again. Its one of two things. You have to load both maps on the GPS at the same time. If you load just one, it replaces what is already loaded. If you have both loaded on your GPS, City Navigator covers all (other than transparent) maps. So to see the topos, you have to disable City Navigator. review thse: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-mapsource/ http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/ http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-change-which-map-is-displayed-on-a-garmin-gps/
  11. Turning navigation to off road should NOT help with your problem. Anyway I would go ahead and get City Navigator. When you got it on gpsfiledepot, get CO Transparent Topo, My Trails, My POIs, and Western landOwnership. (I make all of them) They are designed to be transparent overlays for City Navigator
  12. Either use GSAK or drag and drop your PQ into the \garmin\gpx\ directory of your GPS or card
  13. Go to gpsfiledepot.com and download topo maps there. Make sure you also download and install My Trails http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/53/ The topo maps on gpsfiledepot usually don't have trails so use the topo maps there and My Trails (which is a transparent overlay)
  14. Download waypoints into MapSource or BaseCamp edit there and then send back to your GPS
  15. I've got an OR. But this is what happens sometimes when the PQ does not load correctly and copmpletely. Try reloading your PQ
  16. I'd forget Rails to Trails. My Trails http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/53/ has all the rails to trails up your way and thousands more trail (over 4,000 trails in MI). Its a transparent overlay that will show on top of any map.
  17. You cannot install the preview map via mapsource. The website had a different way to install the map using a program. I figured you used that program instead of mapsource and accidently installed the preview and actual map. You could install both by mistake using the method described on the website. If you did that, everything makes sense.
  18. I installed the trail map and I think I might know what the problem is. Exactly how did you get the map on your GPS? It looks like there are two maps, the transparent trail map and then there is a non transparent map (preview map) that has roads water, etc that is only meant for a background in MapSource. If you have that preview map and the transparent map loaded on your GPS, that would explain things. The Ibysccs topo could have a higher draw order than the preview map which would cover it up. So you would not see it with Ibsyc. And the preview map could cover the Garmin map in which case you would see the preview map (it does not have any contours) and the trail map. So the question is if you are seeing the preview map or if you are seeing the Garmin map without no contour lines. My bet is you are seeing the preview map which should NOT be loaded on your GPS. To tell if this is the problem, download gpsmapedit at http://www.geopainting.com/en/ Run it and drag and drop the img file you have on your GPS into it. It will then give you a list of the img files included. If it lists Southern Alberta Trail Maps 1.17 Preview Map, that is the problem.
  19. Not that I am aware of. It is in a couple of binary files in the directory with the img files. (.mdx and .tdb) When you use mapsettoolkit to install the imgs in MapSource, you can select the draw order or leave it at default. You can use mapsettoolkit to change the draw order of an installed mapset, but while as a map author I would not care if someone did this for non commerical use, I am not sure how the map author of that mapset would feel about it or if it would violate copyright or use agreement. So the best bet is to ask the map author.
  20. Let me know what thre trail map people say-this simply does not make any sense. I just don't get how ANYTHING could stop just the contour lines from drawing. But if I had to guess, I would bet its the draw order is set to something other than the default 31. When it is set to something other than 31, it can react in unusual ways with other maps sets. There are also tricks you can use to have the map not actually be transparent but work transparently. One last thing, under map set up, set map detail to most. I would be shocked if this worked though. As a map maker, I am really curious what is causing this!
  21. OK, thanks - done that and I now have Enter Next Stage in the options so that's a step forward and I'm grateful for your advice. However, as I said elsewhere in reply to ecanderson in relation to Change Location in Mark Waypoint, pressing Enter Next Stage produces the British Ordnance Survey map grid reference and the necessary keyboard to change this, but no alternative which would allow modification of coordinates. I hope you have the patience to further assist if possible! Thats easy to fix. Set up, position format, position format and select hddd mm.mmm (Also make sure the other two settings are WGS 84) Whatever you have this set to in the profile, the GPS will ask you for the cords in that format. Geocaching uses hddd mm.mmm so you have to have the GPS set to that format.
  22. You scrolled down right? It is between Log Attempt and Find Another. If it is not showing, run web updater. The 50s did not use to have this feature until a firm update a year or so ago. So if it does not show up, you need to update to the newest firmware (4.5).
  23. That does not sound right. You could be misunderstanding what you are seeing. First, the shaded releif works for whatever map is displayed. So it does not shed any light on what is going on.. You say you are seeing POIs. Are those POIs from the trail map???? Do you see roads, water, etc from the garmin map or is it just the POIs? If the issue is you are only seeing the one map there could be a conflict with img names. Look in the directory where the imgs for both mapsets are installed. See if both mapsets have an img file with the same name. If that happens, only one map set will be seen when you load them. I just cannot think of any reason why only the contour lines would not show. It only makes sense if the entire map is not showing.
  24. I've determined it is related to the number of childwaypoints. I tried loading just one cache with a childwaypoint and it worked fine. I tried with about 25 caches with child waypoints and it worked fine. I also tried filtering from different distances to make sure there was not a certian waypoint that was causing the problem. I checked and I am loading 511 childwaypoints and when I go to delete, it shows 24% memory used. I also tried some patience as I was pulling the batteries pretty quick. If I let it set for a while, the screen fades away. Then when I power it back up it goes through the reload process-but the waypoints are no longet there. Very strange!
