  1. If you have lots of caches loaded and you go set up, reset, delete all waypoints, it still locks up and shuts down. On this version after you restart the GPS it goes through and reloads everything and the waypoints are all gone. In earlier versions of the firmware when you would restart the waypoints would still be there. So I guess it is progress.

They also have not fixed the defect where the ETA at designation does not give the correct ETA if your designation is in another time zone. It gives the ETA in the time zone you are in not the time zone of your designation.

The problem with lock on road turning itself on was not fixed in 5.1, its too early to say if 5.20 fixed it.

  2. MSTK "installs" imgs by adding some entries to the regestry and creating a couple of files. Uninstall removes the entries from the regestry but does not delete any files. You have to do that yourself.

If you update your imgs, you need to uninstall the mapset and then reinstall it. If you don't you can get a message that says something like the mapset requires 2 megs but you only have 1 gig free when you try to send the imgs to your GPS.

  3. Oh dear – I have tried to update my Oregon 450 to version 5.10 and it hasn’t worked.

I’m using WebUpdater from the Garmin site, and all seems to be working fine while the GPS is connected to my computer.

WebUpdater confirms that it is version 5.10 that is required and downloads it accordingly.

When I disconnect my GPS, however, and switch it on, it comes up with the following:

    “New software found

This software is older than your current software, would you like to continue and lose all user data?”

I have tried both Yes and No, either way, it carries on and eventually boots up looking like an old version of the software – with none of the new improvements.

And sure enough, when I look in “Setup/About” – it tells me I am now running Beta software 3.52 (I think I was on 4.something before)

It also now thinks I am 4,900 miles from home :) But I’m sure when I get it outside with sight of the sky it will soon come to its senses.

Does anyone know how I can get it to accept and install version 5.10?

The update file can be placed on the GPS or the card. If it is on the card, what you describe can occur. You may have had two update files one on the card and one on the GPS.

  4. Well so far ir has not crashed when I import my PQs. Maybe they have finally fixed the problem!

Fingers crossed, that's what I'm hoping too! But you probably jinxed it now...

has anyone else noticed it appears to be much easier to select somethingon the map

Hm, what do you mean? I don't really notice any difference here...

Prior to this upgrade it seemed to be much harder to select a cache or some other point on the map. I used to have to get it exactly on the cache or whatever before it would be recognized. Now it works if I am close.

  5. Yes you can download the maps at gpsfiledepot.com for free. But if you can afford it, you can donate to the site and the map authors. Its a lot of work (and many times expense) to maintain the site and create the maps. For example, while there have been hundreds of thousands of downloads, the site does not even recieve enough donations to pay for a dedicated server. So it would be nice to accompany statemetns that they are free, if you can afford it you can donate to the site and map authors.

  6. Since you are from IL, I suspect you are talking about My Topos which I make and just uploaded a new version of. My Topos has topo lines and detailed hydrology. There is also a mapset for just contour lines for IL. The general ideal behind My Topos being transparent was I hated switching back and forth between a topo map and street map. I wanted to be able to auto route when I see topos. My Trails, My POIs, and Eastern Land Ownenship also cover IL and will work with OSM.

My Topos is designed to be used with City Navigator, not OSM, but as far as I know it works with OSM. I've never had someone tell me of a problem. But there could be a problem so let me tell you how to tell. One big problem with a transparent topo map is big rivers like the MS and IL Rivers or Lakes will cover up a brodge over the river. However, I use a trick to fool the GPS into drawing the river and lake polygons before the roads are drawn. The result is the rivers and lakes will not cover up a road. To do this, I have to match the draw order of City Navigator and its zoom levels. I believe OSM has th same draw order and zoom levels of CN, but i am not postive. To tell if it is working correctly, load OSM and My Topos and then go look at a bridge across the IL or MS. If you see the bridge, its working correctly, if the river covers the bridge, its not working with it (or if you don't see OSM at all, CN does not match OSM.

Here are some tutorials that address your questions:

  7. My Trails has a draw order of 31 (highest) and City Navigator has a draw order of 30. The topo maps will have a draw order of 29 or less. So basically you will always see My Trails and CN will cover up the topos. So just enable and disable CN as needed and all will work. I've spent many hours trying to figure out why it shows up multiple times, but I cannot figure out why.

  8. There is a bug and I have never been able to figure it out, but if you load all of My Trails, it should show up 3 times. Make sure they are all enabled. Sometimes Garmin will also cause incorrect nameing of map sets. My Trails will show on top of everything. So enable everything and see if you see it. Also make sure you have the North and South Caroline Map selected when you send to your GPS.

  9. Its always been random for me too. But the only profile I have the problem with is my Automotive profile. I thought it might be sometime with the profile name so I changed it to car. But it still keeps randomly happening. But this bug is a royal pain. With how accurate the GPS is (it will show which lane I am in) why would anyone want it to lock on the road? 99% of the time when it is off the raod, you are really off the road or the map is wrong. Other than in an urban canyon where the skyscrapers cause you all kinds of problems, I would NEVER want it on lock on road.

  10. Go to the gpsfiledepot forums and search on unlock-there are threads on the issue.

However, as a map maker I will say its a royal pain to make MAC installers-you have to use a garmin converter and it starts out with all your maps selected and there is no unselect all. So its a royal pain when you have lots of maps loaded. I wish someone would make a program to convert the Windows installer to a MAC installer so we would not have to mess with making a second installer for the MAC users. Or at least make us a MAC converter that is easier to use.

  11. Right after Gsrmin finally got BaseCamp to work (when it would load with birds eye) I remember finding and deleteing 100s of thousands of files-they were the files Garmin put on there when you downloaded birdseye data. The newer versions of BaseCamp (well I thought) download jnk files. Well today after again getting frustrated on how it takes Norton days to do a full scan I noticed for hours it was scanning C:\users\jim\appdata\roaming\garmin\basecamp\gcsoverlays So I checkd out the folder and found 90 numbered directories containing over 400,000 files (more than half of all the files on my computer) It took about 6 hours to delete them. Its been quite a while since I downloaded any birdseye so I am not sure if BaseCamp still adds thousands of files everytime you download. So if you have birdseyye I would check. If you find them, make sure you right click on recycle bin and tell it not to move the files there or it will take another 6 hours to empty your recycle bin. Its very irriating Garmin did not have an update delete these files or warn you. What's even more irriating is I know I did this once before. So I wonder if there was a second location that had hundreds of thousands of files.

  12. This River Routing thread seems to have defaulted to the use of Garmin devices and the maps and software available to support those devices for use on rivers.

Delorme PN-40/60 users will find that using the bundled (free) Topo8/9 computer mapping software to create new Routable Trail vectors, not Track bread crumb point layers, along a river channel will work better if mileage along the route is desired. Delorme Topo software includes tools for creating new roads and/or trails, in separate layers if needed.

River Routes created over trail layer vectors in Delorme Topo software can then be transferred to the PN-40/60 GPS devices for use in the field. The route Directions page can then be viewed for estimated distances to included Stops (Waypoints) and Finish distances.

I have inferred from this thread that some of the Garmin devices may be stronger than the Delorme devices in the use of track points for this purpose, however. I don't have a kayak with a paddle, but my interest in kayak routing of others led me to at least purchase an inflatable raft with oars.

You are in error that the pn 40/60 method would work better. What you describe is the same (just different termonology) with the Garmin. A track on the Garmin works just like your routeable trail. However, while not relavant on a float trip, when you are using it to take a hike, the Garmin track manager will also determine high and low points and add them to your route so you can see how far you have to go until the top. Garmin will also add elevation profile to the track.
