  1. Go for Maha rechargeables, they appear to have better power retention than the Sony's that I used earlier. My experience with Sony's batteries has not been entirely satisfactory. The power in one of them seemed to drain off fairly quickly even in storage.

I have lots of engierieer 2500 and the 15 minute charger.

I also have an expensive maha charger. I bought 4 2700 powerX batteries from Maha. I only charge them in the expensive charger. They last about twice as long as the 2500 MA enigerizers in my 60CSX. I get about 18 to 20 hours on a charge. My only complaint is for the first 16 hours the GPS indicates a full charge.

  2. The water comes out the exact place it is in TopoUSA down here in IL by St Louis. Maybe it has something to do with the datum. I use the process and it works fine for me.

Are you adding a layer with just one thing (like a point or small road) in it? If you don't the maps work fine in the GPS, but when you look at them in mapsource, they look like they have a second layer about a 10th of a mile off. Maybe that is your problem. You should have 5 layers, 3 for the topo lines, one with the point or small section of road, and an empty one.

I'd like a copy of your map when you get it done. I've got most of the St. Louis Area done. Where is the best place to post and share our maps?

I'm attempting to make a 1:24k topo map of the Chicago area using this link as a guide. I downloaded the contour lines and the stream data from the respective USGS sites and uploaded them into GPSMapedit. The contour lines and the water are misaligned such that it looks as if all the water terrain has been shifted about a 1/10th of a mile to the north northeast. What am I missing in the process?

  3. I found that other site and the way to download those wierd delimmitted files. I tried everything I could to convert them into something I could use. I tried replaacing the l with a comma and could open it in Quattro Pro and Excel, but I could not figure out a way to get it into something I could use. I also tried gpsbable and was not able to figure it out. It looks like it could do it. It looks like you need to make a style file and I tried figuring it out and was completely comfused. I joined thier gpsbable listserve and asked for help. No one has responded yet. I will let others know if they do. Or it would be great if someone here could figure it out.

If we can figure out how to convert the files properly, it would not be too difficult to create a state map with all the POIs in it. I would suggest once we get it figured out we post how to do it and let people take on different states and then we can post the finished maps somewhere. I did a map for the county I live in and it works perfectly and was only 20K. So I bet you could have a state POI map under 500K.

  4. Thanks that is exactly what I was looking for.

It, however, seems very hard to access what I need. The main problem is I was only able to select 20 points at a time when there could be a hundred or more. That took forever. Is there some easier way to access the data? For example, could you get a file of all the airports for a state?

I was able to make a really neat map for my county that works great. It took forever and I would hope there is an easier way to do it. Here is what I did:

I browsed to the county. Then I would select the categories and save all the waypoints (like all the airports) and then save it as a gpx. Then I would clear my waypoints and go onto the next category. I then ended up with a GPX file for each category.

I then opened each file up in GPSMapediter, selected all the points, then right clicked on them and converted them to proper point. Then I would save the file. Then I would open the next gpx file, convert it and save it. Then I created a new file and added all the files I created and then I saved it and created an img file.

It worked perfectly, but it took forever. I would like to find an easier way. If I could easily get a file for each catergory it would not be that hard.

Any suggestions? Or has someone already made the maps for the entire country?

    Thanks

I've found the elevation and water data, but is there any place where you can get data like springs, mountian names, and other points that are normally on a topo map?

Check out Wayhoo, it creates a GPX file out of the waypoints you create (From the GNIS). From there you can import them into your map or use the POI Loader.

  5. Just to let everyone know I got the 0 layer empty problem (and my other ones) solved. If someone else has the same thing, make sure you have the right cgpsmapper installed! Somehow I had one version that was in a zip file and was using it. I downloaded the correct free install file and everything now works.

This is really neat too. I am really impressed with what it can do. I am makng trail and topo maps now.

I have a couple of questions on data.

I've found the elevation and water data, but is there any place where you can get data like springs, mountian names, and other points that are normally on a topo map?

I've found some ArcView data in the adf format. Is there a way to get that into the maps? I have version 3 of Archview (barely know how to use it) and I installed it. I added the adf files as themes then saved them as a shapfile. Then I tried to import them into gpsmapedit. The program improted it and then the screen went blank and all kinds of weird stuff.

  6. Thanks, but I am still all confused by this in spite of normally being able to figure out this kind of stuff. I am about to go crazy trying to figure this out. I just do not understand why someone has not made a program that easily does this stuff-I would pay a lot for it.

Anyway, is there somewhere that explains the steps well? I've tried to figure this out and it does not work.

I do not have a pv.txt or know how to make one. Can someone diret me to directions on what to do with this?

I am trying to convert track files into transparnet trail files in a map. I've loaded them in GPS MApedit, converted them to trails and set the zoom levels. (Not sure if they are right though). I then go to export garmin img file. It then runs G:\Work\GPSmap0060\cgpsmapper.exe

    I then get:

GPSmapper command line utility version: 0060 Mar 23 2003

    Without SHP support

    Layer0 cannot be empty!

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Did anyone ever figure out the Layer0 cannot be empty! problem?

I wish someone would make one of these mapping programs that is easy to use! I would buy such a program.

If you are referring to the error message when running the cGPSMAPPER command line for converting the .img file into the TDB and pvimage file, it really has nothing to do with layer 0, as you might "normally" interpret it. In order to run cgpsmapper program, the pv.txt file and the .img file have to be copied from where you have them into the same folder as the cgpsmapper.exe file. cgpsmapper only looks in that folder for the files...if they are not there, cgpsmapper will not look elsewhere and will deliver an error message. You need two files in the folder to successfully compile the map. One is the PV.txt file, into which you put all your specific map names, levels , and the name of the .img file you want to convert..if there is no reference here to the .img file, you will again get an error message. The other file you need is the .img file you got from Mapedit, to which the pv.txt file refers to during processing.

When you go to compile you must get the dos prompt, and navigate to the folder where the cgpsmapper.exe file is located. You can get the path statement by leaving the window of the folder where gpsmapper.exe is located open on you desktop...again, if you don't navigate to this folder, you will get an error message when compiling. "layer 0 is empty" warning is caused by several different errors, which have nothing to do with layers in the original garmin .img file you have already created.

  7. Newbie here, what exactly is the tunnel problem?

I have a tunnel nearby but no car but tunnel has a pedestrian walk way built in if one doesn't mind walking through a noisy echoey windy tunnel.

It is when, on 60/76 'x' series units (SIRF III), if the unit loses signal WITH WAAS ENABLED, and the unit moves some 'appreciable' distance it either never regains lock or regains it for a short period of time and then freezes up. If this happens, the only way to get up & running again is to power off/on again.

Happened to me last week in a Kroger store. I was testing the new 60csx, and I lost signal in the Kroger, after returning to the lot, it locked up. I had the 2.90 installed. I'll give it a test in the Eisenhower tunnel next Friday and see if it locks up now that I installed the new 2.60 version.

I will be going through it on Thursday

  8. I tried it a couple of times and got the same thing

thanks! I really don't think it should work this way, I emailed garmin but who knows if that will do any good. before I figured out what was causing the problem I emailed them to say I was getting strange numbers sometimes when projecting, I got a responce basicly telling me I didn't know what I was talking about, that projection was working fine. maybe now that I told them how to dupllicate the problem they will fix it.

at least I know it's not just me. now I just wish I knew which numbers to believe.

I meant I got the same result both ways. So proection works for me no matter which way I enter it. I am using a 60CSX

  9. There was another thread on this, that version is messed up. I am surpised Garmin still has it up. The problem others with a 60CSX was having was it gave every POI a proximity alarm and removed the note. Uninstall it and go to the earlier version (however, I even had to go and edit the regestry then uninstall it again)

  10. With my 60CSX, the map wil lock up in certian places. Garmin kept telling me it was the GPS and I am on my 3rd GPS. I finally figured out that some custom POIs with proximity alerts was causing the problem. If you go to set up, system, and turn off proximity alerts, it works fine (other than not giving proximity alerts. So if it is doing it in certian locations, try turning off proximity alarms.

  11. My issue with Garmin is they are not being honest and up front with its customers. I paid lots of money for the unit. I think they should show me and the others who paid hundreds of dollars for a unit the respect of being honest with us on what is going on. While they cannot control where the WAAS birds are, if they wanted to, they could put something on their website explaining the situation and what is being done to address it. That would satisfy me. What I started this about is how they are lying about what is going on. I have suggested over and over to Garmin that they should put something on their website to explain what is happening and all I get is lies and inconsistent stories.

  12. A few quick points before I post Garmin's reply.

!) I've been following the discussions about the issues with WAAS and the 60CSX. So I knew Garmin was lying to me. That's the point. I am a long time owner of Garmins and have really liked them, but lately I am getting very frustrated with them. So the point is not only is Garmin not fixing the WAAS, they are not even telling the truth on what is happening with it.

    2) As to the confidentiality notice, I never saw it. But if I did, I still would have posted what I was told. I was the intended recipient. Their response is not copyrighted and even if it was, my use would have been covered by the fair use exemption. Give me a break, do you want to argue Garmin can prevent exposure of how they are dealing with WAAS by a notice like this? I also told the guy I was going to post his message on the forum so others can see how Garmin is lying. His response did not object to this.

    3) As I said, I have been following the other discussions on the 60CSX and WAAS so I knew I was being lied to. For those who have not been following the other discussions, the issue is WAAS only works on the 60 CSX in some parts of the country. It does not work in other parts.

    4) A hard reset is not the issue. The issue is your location. I live in IL by St. Louis. I have now had 3 60CSXs (there is a software issue with proximity POIs and they kept saying it was the unit) and they never got a WAAS fix here. A couple of weeks ago, I went to WV and turned on WAAS. It worked. When I got home, it no longer worked. A few days ago I went to Milwaukee, WI and WAAS would not work there.

Here is their latest reply-now they are saying WAAS does not affect accuracy so don't worry about it (so why then do they have WAAS-it certainly improves your accuracy):

What does accuracy measurement are you getting on your unit? This information you have not provided me so that a determination can be made as to the accuracy of your unit. With the information you have provided this is not an issue with your unit.

With the new SiRF antennas you might not see the D's and when you do it is most likely because the WAAS satellites are located at the equator and are more visible by either the East or West coast states and you are in on of those states (ex. West Virginia). In the middle of the US (ex: Missouri) you might not see this show up but can get just as good accuracy with the new SiRF antenna without WAAS. The following is what you will see for accuracy standards for your unit and if your unit shows an accuracy of <5 meters typical then you are getting as good of accuracy of WAAS with or without the D's showing up on the Satellite Page.

Receiver: 12 channel SiRFstar III high-sensitivity GPS receiver

(WAAS-enabled) continuously tracks and uses up to 12 satellites to compute and update your position

    GPS accuracy:

    Position: <10 meters, typical

    Velocity: .05 meter/sec steady state

    DGPS (WAAS) accuracy:

    Position: <5 meters, typical

    Velocity: .05 meter/sec steady state

There is no false advertising in our products because it is WAAS-enabled but with the SiRF antennas it is not usually needed to provide the same accuracy standards.

  13. Here is what they told me today for my 60CSX-I worte back letting them know how upsetting their lies are.

With your issue about WAAS what are you referring to? WAAS works on that model unit but will show differently with the new SiRF antennas that your model has. If you see that you are getting better accuracy than 50 feet then WAAS is working. If you are not please provide more information about this issue and I will be happy to address it for you further.

  14. How do we know the NSA has not got with the manufacturers to put something in the GPS to help spy on us and classified this information? If they did it with our phone records, why not our GPS? So maybe there is something secret in GPSs that allows the NSA to see where you are at if you disagree with Bush. Maybe that is why they don't want them on.

  15. I did not know there was an updated version of the POI Loader. I have a 60CSX with 2.90. I am having issues with proximity POIs locking up my map so I decided to try the new version of POI Loader. It definitely is your problem as the same thing happened to me.

I still have 2.21 but it is too big to email you.

I uninstalled the new version and reinstalled 2.21 and it still had the proximity alerts. So I uninstalled it again and took a look at the registry. There was a tab for the POI loader. I deleted it and then reinstalled 2.21 and I no longer got the proximity alerts on all the POIs.

So it looks like the new version does something to the registry that causes the problem.

  16. Yes thanks for pointing this out. This much better than the plucker desktop. I like how it lods the photos that sometimers you need.

Somehow I ended up downloading and installing what I think is an older version as it was Sunrise Desktop and I had some problems with it. When I installed Sunerise XP, it worked perfectly.

Here is the right sight to get it:

    http://www.sunrisexp.com/

    Thanks again.

  17. Anyone know about the exit informaiton? Is not that on the basemap? When I search for exits, it indicates it is searching the basemap, not City Nav 7.

On my eMap I can select which map is used for exit information. The default is to use the basemap but if I hit MENU when the exits are listed I can opt to select the map and switch to City Select or MetroGuide. California changed the exit numbering since I bought the eMap so the numbers are different on the basemap vs. the more recent detailed maps.

I have a 60CSX and City Nav 7. When I hit menu, I only get Select Category, Select Exit Road, and Change Reference. What map are you using

  18. Anyone know about the exit informaiton? Is not that on the basemap? When I search for exits, it indicates it is searching the basemap, not City Nav 7. It would be nice for City NAv to have updated informaiton for the exits. I thought in the past, the maps you downloaded had updated exit information.

  19. Can you point to or provide directions on how to use Sunrise for this? I do not particularly like Plucker Desktop. I found where to download it, but the directions are not the greatest.

    Thanks

Once you get the correct application on your pda, consider using the Sunrise Desktop instead of Plucker's desktop application. It runs faster and you will be able to easily get any pics from the cache pages onto your pda's pages.

  20. Two points:

    1) You are in error when you say this is a "law." It is a Federal Regulation, that is why it is in the Code of Federal Regulations. Laws are in the United States Code (USC) and are passed by Congress. Regulations are promugulated by agencies (and many times courts throw them out).

    2) While the regulations you quote are not real clear, I think it says the pilot can authorize its use. While operator is not defined, the context appears to mean the person flying (operating) the aircraft. Perhaps I am wrong, but section c makes no sense if operator is referring to the airline. Anyway would not the pilot be the representative of the airline? So I think this says the pilot can allow its use.

    Sigh.

I’m sure that “baloo&bd” meant well, but in his/her ignorance of the facts, made some errors. The “myths” attributed to me are facts of the physical world. Those with formal education, experience, and expertise in electronics know these things. “baloo&bd” may choose to attempt to trump my credentials. (BTW, I will add that I did not assert that a GPSr will cause a problem; I even said that it probably will not.)

Since s/he disregards facts of electronics, I will now present the law. Maybe “baloo&bd” is a lawyer and can point out where I am misunderstanding this section of the CFR, too. For validation, please see http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-....4.11&idno=14):

    --Quote--

    § 91.21 Portable electronic devices.

    (a) Except as provided in paragraph (:D of this section, no person may operate, nor may any operator or pilot in command of an aircraft allow the operation of, any portable electronic device on any of the following U.S.-registered civil aircraft:

    (1) Aircraft operated by a holder of an air carrier operating certificate or an operating certificate; or

    (2) Any other aircraft while it is operated under IFR.

(:drama: Paragraph (a) of this section does not apply to—

    (1) Portable voice recorders;

    (2) Hearing aids;

    (3) Heart pacemakers;

    (4) Electric shavers; or

    (5) Any other portable electronic device that the operator of the aircraft has determined will not cause interference with the navigation or communication system of the aircraft on which it is to be used.

( c) In the case of an aircraft operated by a holder of an air carrier operating certificate or an operating certificate, the determination required by paragraph (:ninja:(5) of this section shall be made by that operator of the aircraft on which the particular device is to be used. In the case of other aircraft, the determination may be made by the pilot in command or other operator of the aircraft.

    --End quote--

What that means, in English, for those flying on a U.S. commercial aircraft, is: You are NOT permitted to operate ANY portable electronic device EXCEPT those listed in (:ninja:(1) through (5).

Paragraph (:)(5) allows devices that the airline (“operator”) permits. Contrary to what “baloo&bd” says, the Captain may NOT grant exceptions.

There’s no room for fudging here, folks.

Why not just obey the rules? If a panel of attorneys and engineers explained all this to you, and told you what the rules are, would you then tell them that you just don't believe them and are going to do what you want anyway? Why is it that some people, in their ignorance, feel compelled to assert that they know more than the “experts?”

(So you won't think that I'm being insulting: Ignorant: lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified)
