  1. Wow I thought I travelled heavy but my list ain't half as long as most: (in roughly descending order of importance) Common sense stuff: OS Explorer (1:25,000) map of area & compass & knowledge of how to use them Sustenance and hydration (varies each trip; water, juice, chocolate, plus usual packed lunch stuff) Mobile phone Clothes (depending on forecast but always including something long-sleeved for nettle rummaging) Basically a complete cycle repair kit (pump, puncture kit, spare tube, spanners, allen keys) Money Caching stuff: Printout Any 'bugs or 'coins in my possession at the time Camera (always post photos in my find logs) Stuff that ain't in there that really should be: First aid kit GPSr
  2. The most obvious things are the ones I've overlooked in my brief Geocaching history: - Even in hot weather, bring a long-sleeved sweater for the hunt - nettles hurt! - When planning a walk to a cache, count the contour lines on the map between the start and the cache site!
  3. You can use your regular email program (Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc) with Gmail. In your Gmail settings (top-right of the Gmail website), click on the "Forwarding and POP" section, then click the option for "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on" and click the Save Settings button. Now you just have to set up your email program. Have a read of this help doc for detailed instructions for most email programs
  4. Perhaps I'm missing something methodology-wise but how do twenty percent of cachers take photos without a camera?
  5. Two nations separated by a common language When something has gone pear shaped, it's gotten messed up Thanks for the advice, I think, looking at the logs and one posted later this afternoon (seems I was the second visitor of the day), that I know who moved it. I'll just quietly wait a while for them to have the opportunity to organise their TB logs before I politely nudge someone with 100x more finds than me :D [edit for rubbish grammar]
  6. Ok, it's taken 14 cache finds but I've finally had my first "Eek! What do I do now?!" moment I found a TB in a cache near home an hour or so ago and took it. Trying to log it, and I've realised it shouldn't have been there. According to the logs, it should be in a cache about 20 miles away. Additionally, there should have been a Geocoin in the cache I visited, and I'm almost positive it wasn't there. With my fairly limited experience, I can see at least three different ways this can happen. I think the geocoin may be irrelevant (taken just before me but not logged yet, perhaps) but regarding the TB, I'm guessing that someone, somewhere made a logging error but I've got no idea who to contact to work it out. TB owner? Previous logger? I'd like to help try and fill the gap that's been left in the log. I've not logged anything yet, I'll wait for advice, I think
  7. It's only £1.55 a month (at Paypal's exchange rate, that was the final amount charged to my card for last month). Hardly even worth thinking about in my opinion, I'd paid up before I went after my first cache. Given that it's so cheap, I hardly thought of it as much of a commitment. I only go caching once or twice a week and without a GPSr (yet) but even at my level of involvement, premium membership is worth it even if just for the fact that I can dump the PQ of caches within about 15 miles of me (260ish right now) into Google Earth and see clusters of caches to plan visits. That and the fuzzy warm feeling of supporting the site
  8. Um... A combination of the train, my feet and my shiny new cachemobile. Well, sort of : (Seen here near-ish to GC13WEC) It's highly economical - about 15-20 MPM (miles per meal )
  9. I must admit, i had a good old think on that one too. then let it go. Tony Time to quit lurking and start posting It seems to be just a guide. Most of my caching photos are 800 wide by 600 high and up to about 160KB (bigger than both the supposed maximum file and pixel sizes) and got through without being shrunk. Although I do have a couple slightly above 160KB that did get shrunk. So logically: If file size is huge but the dimensions are less than 600px wide/high then the image gets left alone. And: If image dimensions are huge but the file size is less than 125KB (or more likely, somewhere around 160KB) then the image gets left alone. Or: If the dimensions are bigger than 600px wide/high and the file size is greater than 125KB (officially) or 160KB (in practice) then the image gets subjected to the geocaching.com Acme shrink ray. I think but it's far to late/early to be thinking...
