  1. I found a GSAK macro for you GSAK users. It loads caches directly onto the Oregon, but it has a checkbox for a larger font which makes reading cache descriptions a little easier for those of us with 'mature' vision. http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=...amp;#entry77391 It's called 'ColoradoExportBeta.gsk' and I really like it! I've submitted a request to Garmin so hopefully they will include selectable font size in a future update.
  2. Congratulations to LLOT on 5000 finds! Congrats to Jukalimi on his First Kilo! Those poor caches don't stand a chance!
  3. I'm using a 4GB microSD card (class 2) because the Garmins don't seem to like the class 4 or 6 as much, but there's no lag in map drawing or cache loading. I have an Oregon 300 with CityNav for all of the US & Canada plus 24K topo (GPSfiledepot.com) for all of CA and 100K Garmin topo for the WA, OR, AZ, NM, TX, UT, CO and NV and it takes up 3.5 GB Also look at the Sanyo eneloops. The ones I use are rated for 2000 mAh and I really like them.
  4. REI is famous for their 'no questions asked' return policy, you'll pay full retail, but you can always return or exchange it for another unit. I did this when I bought the PN-40, tried it for a month, it was just too much work to use, so I returned it and got an Oregon. I've been really happy overall, there are still some issues, but they seem to be solving the problems expeditiously. The new Lowrance unit looks like it might be pretty nice too.
  5. I checked with my e-mail provider att/yahoo and the spam filter is off, has been off, will remain off, so I suspect it's a Groundspeak issue. Is it possible that new caches where the owner posts a note are being excluded from the new cache notifications?
  6. I've been having this problem too over the last week or two...missing notifications of new caches, they show in the PQ's and I get notifications of other things like archived caches or updates to caches but several people I know have not gotten notifications of newly published caches.
  7. Topo's are definitely nice to have, the 24K versions especially. Since the data is not proprietary, its not locked to a single serial number. You can buy the Garmin versions or you can get free maps from www.GPSfiledepot.com
  8. Try this: Step 1: "Honey, my old GPS is a little worn, I was thinking of getting that spiffy new unit and going geocaching, but instead I think I'll just stay home and keep you company all day, every day." Step 2: Enjoy your new GPS!
  9. Congratulations, Triple Crown!!! Thank you! and congrats to lulu499 & Flagman on their milestones. Also congrats to Jahoadi & John on slaying Antelope Valley with 170 finds in 12 hours of caching! Hey I think that takes them over 12000 finds!!!
  10. Update. Still having the same problem, still intermittently. I'm using a 4GB class 4 microSD card, I believe Garmin recommends a class 2, I'll try to pick one of those up to see if it solves the problem.
  11. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try both of them the next time I load the GPSr.
  12. I've been exporting about 1900 caches in just 1 file and 10 logs per geocache (10.8 MB), with no other GPX files on the unit. Last night I tried a new GSAK macro and so far the problem hasn't appeared. The new macro also allows the option for a larger font when displaying the cache description (Yay!) so if the macro writer can do it, maybe Garmin put that to the list of helpful features to add. http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=...amp;#entry77391
  13. I have not tried a GPX directly from Groundspeak, I assume I'd have to unzip it first. I'll try that. Thanks.
  14. As long as you are placing the files in the /Garmin/GPX folder you should not have any problems with them. Where are your GPX files coming from? If from Groundspeak, are you putting the GPX files or the ZIP files on the GPSr? I only place the GPX files and have no problems with them. If the files are generated out of GSAK or some other program, make sure that they are properly formatted. A corrupt GPX file could cause what you are seeing. Along the same lines, just unplugging the GPSr from the USB cable without doing a "eject" or "safely remove" option, you could be corrupting the GPX file on the device without realizing that you are doing it to yourself. Thanks for the ideas, I'm generating the GPX files in GSAK but the same thing happens whether I use a macro to export it directly to the unit or I export a GPX to the desktop and drag it over to the unit. The odd thing is that the second time I do it, it almost always works. The same GPX files work fine on my 60Csx. I've also been careful to use the 'Safely remove hardware' button in windows (XP)
  15. I've been loading caches onto my Oregon 300 (2.98beta) via GSAK and I've tried putting it on the internal memory and on the microSD card. Either way, the GPX file is there, but about half the time when I power on the unit it says no geocaches are loaded, power cycling doesn't help, but if I delete the GPX and re-install it, the unit usually shows the caches. Any suggestions or ideas?
  16. And then, per the OP's plan, you are free to give away your extra, topo loaded, GPSr to anyone you want.
  17. The topo data is not proprietary, so they don't lock it to a serial number, you can put it on all of your GPSr's. Also you can get free topos at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ and free routable worldwide maps at http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php (use FireFox for this site)
  18. Maybe the basemap on the Colorado is different then. The Oregon 300's is less than 20 MB.
  19. Good luck emailing a file that size.... Garmin emailed it to me, I've already forwarded to another Oregon user in the UK. 2 files: gmaptz.img is 529 KB and gmapbmap.img is 19.9 MB
  20. Not there I did this on my Oregon, and when I called tech support they re-installed it for me by sending the file and installing it for me by taking over my computer remotely. Pretty slick. I can e-mail you the files if you want, maps should be the same.
  21. The 24K maps include all the streets too, so it just comes down to your preference. The pre-loaded microSD cards are easy to use, just drop in and go. The DVD or dowload will require you to transfer the maps to your own microSD card using MapSource (included) but it gives you the flexibility to use the maps on other units. My personal preference would be the 24K West DVD. That said, you can also get free 24K maps at GPSfiledepot but you won't have routable roads.
  22. I see, well one way is to go to setup, reset, restore defaults to factory settings, but this will create a lot of work for you if you've customized a lot of settings.
  23. When you say latest firmware, do you mean 2.98Beta or the latest official release. There is a lot of fixes in the 2.98Beta release. I would recommend you start there. Yeah, I've got 2.90. I haven't seen this new one. Where can I get it? http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4393
