  1. As requested I will "chime in" My complaint, is simply this: I paid for a product who's only function is to display up-to-date maps in my car. I updated the maps and 2 days later a newer version came out... now some may argue this is not a big deal... BUT I feel that I should be allowed the newest version of the maps... There is NO way Garmin is going to get GPS's on the shelves that are less than 2 days old in updates, they offer the updates to bring the maps up-to-date, they even say I have 60 days to update it... so, why would I purchase a product and purposely NOT update it for 59 days for fear that a new map set will be issued??? I wouldn't! So, if there is a newer upgrade in those 60 days, why can I not download it? I understand and respect the argument that they state 1 upgrade... but it seems (again to me) rather silly, to then place a time limit on it... why not just offer 1 upgrade and no time limit? The upgrades are tied to serial number - so tracking is not a factor... As for the doughnut shop analogy... well to be honest... I do not frequent them, as those who have cached with me can attest to... but I do want to have 2 - 3 year old roads displayed on the mapping device I purchased (again for the sole purpose of showing those same roads in my car...) They are NOT on the current update I have and I was hoping to find them on the .04 update. I am glad to see that this debate is stimulating so much conversation, but would ask that we keep person opinion to just that as well... insulting (or attempting to insinuate that I am am spoiled, gadget collecting whiner, etc are really not pertinent to the issue) If you'd like to discuss sociological issues we can do that in email. I hope this helps to clarify my true feelings - again they reflect only MY opinion... DD

There is / was a whole discussion on this topic - do a search here on it....
  3. Well in all honesty.. I am a little offended by you comment about an 'air of entitlement"... I expect to be treated fairly and in MY opinion this is not. I completely offer, that this is entirely MY opinion and yours may vary, but to comment that I have an air of entitlement is a little lofty itself sir. I believe (again opinion) that in this situation it would not be difficult, costly nor and other words to that effect for Garmin to offer the upgrade. I completely understand that they have to draw a line somewhere and I would expect this to be at the 60 day interval, or even the 30 day interval they offer the one free upgrade for.
  4. Well after reading the Garmin policy on map upgrading (I'll admit I did not the first time), and some posters suggesting that a lifetime upgrade is the way to go, I find it interesting that their "lifetime is when Garmin decides to end the product, so you could in theory also pay for the lifetime updates and they end the 765t thus ending you upgrade path as well. I am not whining that I have to pay for something, nor feel some sort of entitlement as some are suggesting. I bought a mapping device - that is ALL it is for, so I would expect that I would be able to get the latest maps available from the company at the time. I understand they want to make money to repay their costs for updating them, but at the same time, they do not discount the GPS when I buy it and it has one year old maps on it. Instead it is up to me to have to update them.. ok, fine... they offer this service free as long as I provide all the necessary technology and connection fees (internet) to do so. Now, they give me 60 days from initial activation to do this. I did this after 2 days (why would I buy a product, know there is a better set of maps available and wait to update them?) Sound ridiculous doesn't it? Soo.. when a newer version of the maps is released (the reason I bought this thing) 2 days after i update the maps in it and I have 60 days to update it.. it would seem reasonable to me that I would be eligible to also receive those maps as well... at least to me... That is my complaint. DD
  5. Get this: Two days ago I activated my NEW Garmin NUVI 765t and download the updated maps that were on (ver .30). Today I find out a new version has been released, so I go online to download it and discover I will have to pay 69 bucks to update my maps to ver .40 .... Now, I dunno about you, but 69 bucks for an update seems a little steep seeing as these maps have been updated after only 2 days. Not to be disillusioned, I contacted Garmin and though they would give me the benefit of the doubt and spoke with a customer service person who politely informed me I was not eligible for the upgrade. Hmmm.. well, I'll try an email.... same net result... pay us some cash. I replied that I was rather dissatisfied and that if I was a person of lesser scruples I would return the unit to the store I bought it at, lie and say it was defective, get a replacement, activate it and download the new maps for FREE. I guess I am just venting here and looking for a sounding board... am I being obtuse or is Garmin giving me the shaft?
  6. Yes it does work - I use it occasionally still on my laptop with a non Garmin PPCMIA GPS DD
  7. Anyone familiar with this GPS ? I am considering purchasing one for in-car navigation and would like to load caches onto it (We have an Oregon and I would use that for outside the car) I like the idea of Bluetooth capability for my phone and the speaking street names to avoid having to look at it all the time. I was wondering if anyone has one and how they like it, and if it works with th eNuvi macro for GSAK or not... Any comments would be appreciated... Happy New Year... DD
  8. When I was out in gagetown NB there was a place nearby (Oromocto I think) - Canadian Peacekeepers... they would be able to sell you some probably http://www.cpgear.com/ Cheers, Happy new year Of course it matters just what your definition of paracord is... I see some awful stuff that is listed as paracord, but isn't... seems to have become a generic for 1/8 inch accessory stuff from camping shops. Of course REAL 550 would be Type III suspension line, and would be available through any parachute rigging shop or supplier... I don't know the market there... My source retired not long after I did... but you can usually order as much as you want from ParaGear and other suppliers. New chutes use a lot of different materials since I was rigging... there are lots of good cordage from other sources as well... depending on what you wish to do with it... There was a posting on another forum G topics I think about someone selling 'survival straps' made of Type III in colours plus other products... but those were very pricy for less than 24 feet of cord. 9. I agree.. ran out for a quick cache this evening and everything worked flawlessly! I love it! (Or 300)
  10. How are you getting the Geocaches into the Oregon? (GSAK?)
  11. Do a search on here (in this forum) on custom maps - the last entry was a couple days ago I believe. There is a link in the thread giving full instructions for google earth and the Oregon series (I know, I followed it and it worked LOL) DD
  12. 4. is a definite YES... I have custom maps on my card ONLY. They need to be in the directory as indicated X:\Garmin\CustomMaps\ (I initially made the mistake of putting them in a Custom Maps directory only - it doesn't work, has to be within the Garmin directory) DD
  13. I have a JPEG of Short Hills trails that I am able to upload through Google Earth to my Oregon GPS and view there, but it turns out with a white background. I have left the draw number <50 and this helps, but is there any way of making the background transparent, but keeping the trails - I have Photoshop but cannot seem to accomplish it... HELP
  14. If your using GSAK, you could also combine the two (or more) PQ's with a macro (available on the GSAK page) and then upload them combined together.... DD
  15. If you still have the GPS I will pay to ship it here.. a friend is looking to try replacing the screen on his that is cracked....
  16. Welcome to the sport.... Well.. odds are that I have probably done the cache you found.. so if you can let me know where it was i can probably tell you which one it is. To log a cache you need to know the coordinates of it, the name of it or at least a general idea of where it is. Find the cache on the maps (her eon Geocaching.com and then select LOG YOUR VISIT in th eupper right hand corner of the page. Not terribly difficult. most time you head out looking for a specific cache(s) so it is a lot easier logging them when you know which ones you found (or didn't - as will be the case sometimes) DyverDown a Niagara resident (of the CANADIAN nature)
  17. I am a little confused.... how do you send NMEA data from the unit without connecting to the USB port???? If you mean you use the GPS as an in-vehicle navigation system by connecting the vehicle power to it, then I understand, but I ALSO need to have the NMEA data output from the GPS to go to my VHF radio to allow it (the VHF) to receive positional aware weather and send a distress signal complete with position (if ever required). Do these have the GPS out wires on the USB fitting? I need that to connect to my VHF radio to give position data to it. No Just power, but i have set mine up to use as a sat nav and it works fine both in and out of the car

  19. Anyone used this cable? https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=26668# Can it be connected to the fuse panel? I emailed Garmin this "Ok.. but what VOLTAGE should it be connected to (12 volts, or can it handle the actual vehicle power 13.8 when the car is running??)" and the response I got was "I am happy to help you with this. 12 Volts" I believe (I am by no means a mechanic, so bear with me) that the alternator output is greater than 12V when the vehicle is running (to facilitate charging the battery). I want to know if this >12V will adversely effect the Oregon ie: will I fry my GPS?
  20. What is the latest version of Ibycus topo (2.1?)
  21. I am sure one of the already existing maros could be adapted...
  22. I am the church rep for the 22nd at St Columba Church, but am more than willing in assisting if there is an interest. DD
  23. I dunno... maybe this is a question for Garmin.... but I would like to know the answer too DD I agree with this method and it is the one I have used in the past in the Great Lakes. Generally, the smaller maps are more detailed. BUT, I've noticed on the BC coast there are American and Canadian charts of the same area. Which one is used by the unit in this case? Further, there are charts with significant overlaps with different copyright dates. I'd rather take the one of less detail if it is 10 years newer. I thought there might be an easier answer. Still curious to know how the GPS decides though. How does it know the level of detail on the smaller maps?
  24. Ibycus Topos do a great job - and best of all they are FREE Download them and head to their website, there are instructions on how to load 'em up. Best advice I can give you is to take a few days and READ READ READ.... When I changed over from my Magellan (explorist too) I was a little confused on "how to" with Garmin's..... DD Have not tried this yet but have heard he does a good job on topo's. http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/#Detail
  25. Just as with paper charts, there a re specific "detailed" charts of harbours etc. If you zoom in on a specific area that has a more detailed chart the GPS displays that "map area" if you are simply cruising by in the open ocean or lake, then there is no real reason to show details about slips, nav buoys etc inside the detailed area (assuming it is a distance away of course) if there are hazzards to nav etc, then the unit will display them of course. It's kind of like having a map of city streets and a map of highways - if you are driving across Canada you are not really concerned with every side street - unless you exit the highway (in which case it would be nice to have them)...likewise if you are downtown Toronto, you really do not care too much about the highways in Mississauga, but want details about every small street around you. It's like having all the charts available, onlty the GPS decides which one to "look at" based on where you are, or your zoom settings at that particular moment. ---> Load all the ones for the area (and then slightly beyond) that you will be near, as you never know (especially boating) where you may end up forced by weather, repairs etc.... Hope that makes sence.... DD
