  1. Yes, I know the 60CSx did this which is why I went searching for an equivalent button on the Vista HCx, (not sure how many other etrex this works for). Also unlike the counterintuitive button layout on the 60CSx the Zoom 'in' button on the HCx is closer to you and the zooom out is further away, easy to remember.
  2. This has bugged me for so long. When using the keyboard to bring up a list of address to get to the name I have to scroll to the 'OK' button to leave the keyboard and scroll the list. Say goodbye to keyboard ok woes by using the 'zoom in' button to 'OK' a list.
  3. So does the garmin proprietary data card fit in a normal card reader? I've not seen one close up. Is there such a thing as a garmin card reader or were these only ever meant to be used while in a gps unit?
  4. OK, thx. I dread to think what the cost of a Garmin proprietary card reader would be.
  5. Phew, we're getting there. OK so on the 396 it's the User Manual and on the 296 it's called a Pilot's guide, makes sense. Anyhoo I guess this is the salient paragraph... Garmin Data Transfer is disabled when the USB is connected and the unit automatically switches to USB format. So is this saying that the 296 won't/can't mount as a removable volume on the desktop?
  6. Do you actually know how to load maps to the data card in mass storage mode, because if you do then you can just tell me. BTW I could find no reference to this in the 'pilot's guide'. Or if anyone else knows, that would also be good. I'm wondering maybe it can't be put in mass storage mode and the maps have to be transfered from Mapsource? Perhaps.
  7. I'm not after the pilots guide, I was looking for the user manual, but I have since found one for the 396 which appears to be similar, however it still had no infomation on how to access the data card, so if anyone knows who can tell me, than that would be splendid.
  8. There is no online manual for the 296 on the garmin site. Can any maps be loaded to the internal solid state memory or does it need a data cards. Also does this connect to a pc via a menu based 'mass storage mode'? and what is the menu path. thx EDIT: OK it's definitely got a 256 data card installed, so I'm just needing the menu path to get this into mass storage mode.
  9. Bingo. There's a lot of talk here about chipsets, but a chipset only performs as well as the data it receives. The 60csx quad helix antenna is vastly superior to the etrex patch antenna - particularly in regard to reception under heavy cover. Examples: - In my house, I get at least limited reception almost anywhere. The etrex has to be right next to a window. - In my car, I get great reception just placing by 60csx on the passenger seat. The etrex has to sit on the dash. This was the situation about a year ago, then Garmin rolled out the new media tek H series chipsets many people seem to have comprehending this fact. http://gpstracklog.typepad.com/gps_tracklo...tek-gps-ch.html http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=80114
  10. @Klatch, Yes, this used to be my HCx which was borrowed by a friend. I never had any problems with it till he left it in his car in the sun, after which he magically became the new owner and I bought a new HCx which I've never had a problem with. I've also owned a few second hand eTrex and never had a problem with any of them. So my experience has been good until it was left in the sun. I was thinking of using 'Seam Grip' http://seamgrip.com/ (click on 'outdoor' then 'adhesives & seam sealers'. It's incredibly tough, pliable, and waterproof, although it will probably be a permanent bond.
  11. Thanks for that, I will digest and assimilate. The gasket on the one I'm repairing appears to have stretched a bit too. Do you think there is any merit in trying to cut the gasket so it is a flat strip with a millimeter or two can be trimmed off. That will leave a seam (at the bottom) of course. But it may make it easier to get on. Any thoughts on this?
  12. A friend left his HCx in the car in the sun and now it's having the glue problem and I'm going to have a go at fixing it. I've had a look at the various sites that mention this but there are a couple of things I'm not clear on and would appreciate some advice from someone who has actually done it I'm not able to get hold of a new piece of rubber as a spare part, so I have to reuse the old one. I can't see how the gasket (for want of a better word) is meant to be applied. I can see a seam at the top and the bottom but these appear to be where the rubber is 'welded' into a continuous band. So I can't tell if it's meant to come apart at the bottom so it peels off as a flat strip or if it's mean to remain as a continuous band. If it is meant to be continuous then I can't see how it's meant to be applied. Also what is the best glue to use. Rubber cement seems the logical choice but I've also seen a reference to 'silicon gasket maker', and I was wondering if rubber seam sealer as seen in camping stores might be good. Anyway, if anyone has done this I'd be happy for some tips. thx
  13. Jinga G, the 60CSx is to the 60Cx as the VistaHCx is to the Legend HCx, in other words the 60CSx and VistaHCx have the fluxgate compass and barometric altimeter. So if you were thinking about the LegendHCx then you should think about the 60Cx. However I think the compass is well worth the extra $20. There have been many debates about the VistaHCx vs the 60CSx and the VistaHCx is a better unit in that it is more compact without sacrificing any functionality. The buttons on the 60CSx are really a PITA. The screens on each are virtually the same size. The 60CSx has bad button placement, a dimmer (much dimmer) screen, poorer battery life, counterintuitive spongy buttons. But it does have a macho look to it which may be the deciding factor for some. The 60CSx is living off it's former reputation as the best most sensitive garmin reciever. But the HCx has trumped it now. But your friends won't give up trying to sway you so the best thing is to try them both in a shop. I recently talked my landlord into getting a mac. His brother fought tooth and nail to talk him out of it. Anyway he ended up getting a new 24" iMac and now his brother wants to switch to mac. There's a lesson there somewhere. If you prefer a mac to a PC you will prefer the Vista HCx to the 60CSx.
  14. Isn't the bearing (assuming it's pointing straight ahead) always always tangential to a curved path or parallel to a straight path?
  15. Does the Nüvi have a map segment limit of 2025 like the eTrex or a 2GB card limit?
  16. Compared to the rest of the world it appears that Garmin put a premium on the price of their products, but I've just realised that the rest of the world's prices are par and the US users get a rebate built in to the price. This is a cash rebate that recognises the ten billion dollar investment of the US public in gps technology. The US govt kindly decided not to charge a royalty fee for each gpsr sold, so Garmin, altruisticly, just gave it back as an invisible rebate.
  17. If you had licensed map data from NavTeq or TeleAtlas, how would you sell your maps? And how would you prevent their transfer to unauthorized/unlicensed users? Hmmm that's a tough one. Let's see, first thing I'd do is cut down the two unlock code nonsense. Then, I'd charge everyone waaay over the odds so that I could make sure that I'm covered against the few who will always pirate software. After all it can send a company broke. Take Adobe for example, Photoshop must be the most pirated software ever and after 10 years look what's happened to Adobe, they hardly know where their next $billion is coming from. What else, oh yeah, I'd force people who live in australia to pay three times the cost of the US maps that are 10 times larger and make them pay for barely noticable updates at more than what the yanks pay for the full program. That's what I'd do if I were garmin. </sarcasm>
  18. I've looked and cannot find it but that wouldn't be the first time. I'm not sure how many maps I can stuff on the card.
  19. Is that the blue Legend with the monochrome screen or the Legend HCx?
  20. Yes it does, check out this link and click the "experience nuvi" link and you will be able to check it out yourself. (I'm assuming that the 250 will be the same as the 200 in this regard)
  21. I suppose we can be thankful that garmin has restricted their maps to a single unlock code now, thus sparing otherwise law abiding citizens from these sorts of moral dilemmas.
  22. Why don't we do all the units at once and just say that all garmin gpsr's that have a hi sensitivity receiver have better reception than ones that don't.
  23. It's one thing to say you like the 60csx layout. However it is not correct to use the term "ergonomic" because like it or not the 60CSx has not been designed to be ergonomic. ergonomic |ərgəˈnämik| adjective (esp. of workplace design) intended to provide optimum comfort and to avoid stress or injury.
  24. I thought the NT maps were compressed yet the NT maps of Australia are 150.8 Mb which is exactly the same size as the non NT maps. What's going on here.
