  1. I think it is right on the edge of the road right-of-way. It is about 8 feet off the edge of the road, and most local roads around here are not a full town lanes. I didn't think it would be right for me to mark the location, its just that I would hate to see it disappear because someone didn't know what it is or didn't know it was there. I will have to investigate who to contact. I know that the local townships do not have a surveyor, but I ave to imagin that they would know who to contact. Thanks again.
  2. Boy I forget how to do this, I am hoping someone can point this out to me again. When I am searching for benchmarks using a zip it only shows the BM's that located about 10 miles for the center of the zip. I remember that someone a while back showed what to type at the end of the line so that it would enlarge the search area. It was something like, &dist=20. I tried that and it would not work for me so I must be typing it in wrong. I was wondering if someone could show me where I am going wrong. Thanks.
  3. Would it be wise to mark it in someway? Like orange ribbon. I was even thinking of a carsonite post like they use for a witness post. Or is that going to far? I have seen several signs that can be purchased that used for marking survey markers, They are from Berntsen, www.berntsen.com. They are only a few bucks no big deal, if that is all it would take to help and protect the BM I would get one and put one at the BM. Or would me putting a sign or post up bring more attention to the BM and then that is what destroys it? I guess I will have to stop and talk to the guy and find out just how much he plans to build in the area. Thanks.
  4. I was wondering if I should do something to try and protect a BM that may in the near future be in harms way. Near by there is a BM that is located where a local builder is starting to build a few new homes, he just recently put in a few new driveways near by the BM. Is there anything I can do or should do to try and protect it from being destroyed. I know that the local builder doesn't know it is there and right at the BM there is an old road that leads back into the woods, so I figure that if he does put in a driveway here it will be right at the BM and that he will most likely move the large boulder that the BM is located on. Has any one had a first hand experiance with something like this? If you did what did you do? I figure that since they aren't placing that many new BM's might as well try and save one. The BM that I am talking about is, KW1877 Thanks for any help.
  5. They sure must have changed what they approve then. Just south of me in the town of Carlisle there is a lot of virtuals that are all at Historic Markers. And that cache that I referanced in the original post it's location doesn't do much for me, then again it is just up the road from me and I see it all the time. I guess I will have to try and find a way to make them a phsyical caches. It will be tough. Since our area is very rural there is not much public land near the Historic Markers that I wanted to use. Thanks everyone for replies, oh yea thanks for that pic very nice, I had to really study it.
  6. Is anyone else having any trouble getting a virtual approved or is it just me? I had a cool idea that came to me a few weeks ago for doing a series of caches on the history of Perry county, PA. This is where I call home. There is a lot of Historic makers around the county and I decide that it would be neat to do a series of caches that would tell, in more detail, the history of Perry County. I knew from the beginning that some of them would have to be virtual because of the location. Some of these markers are in peoples front yards. It just so happen that the first 3 that I submitted for approval were virtuals, and guess what, they were all disapproved!! I was told that they were not unique enough to justify a virtual! How much more unique can you get to a one of a kind Historic Marker. Well any way I was told that I should try and make a multi out of it so it would end in a physical cache. The problem that I see is that it will take away the effect of the Historic Marker because once you get the info you are off to the other part of the multi. I wanted to get the caches to look and read the Historic Marker and make that the main purpose of the cache not the physical cache at the end of a multi. The other thing that gets me is that just recently a virtual nearby was just approved. How did they get approval? GCK11M I am not trying to a whole series of virtuals when ever possible I would put a physical caches. Well sorry for the rant, I was just curious if anyone else had the same problem.
  7. Every pic that I have uploaded I have renamed it as the PID and then added disc if it is a close up. I also added a caption that stated the PID. I figure that if you need more info lookup the PID that is stated and go out and find the BM for yourelf. I do agree that some designation should be given so as to tell what it is but time, date and location? Shouldn't the PID tell you where it is located when you look it up? I have to agree with Bons this is a hobby, nothing more. IMHO make a caption with the PID. Anything else is up to you. Remember, This is supposed to be fun. mustanglx
  8. I found this BM along with another today while I was looking for a cache along a portion of the AP trail. Very Cool. I wonder if these BM's will ever be put in the list of BM's to find here on geocaching.com?? I think they would be cool to find, no worries about being on private property. I have to image that there are other BM's like these located all along the AP trail. mustanglx
  9. I found this one while I was in Oklahoma. I was out looking for BM's when I noticed the orange pole along the road.
  10. At least he is not stopping at a QuikMart for donuts , I bet he ordered one of those McChicken Salads right? I am amazed that the mark was not destroyed when McD's was built. mustanglx
  11. Contact Magellan about your problem. I have sent my Sportrak map for repair and I have found that Magellan is trying hard to make sure everyone is pleased with there handheld gps's. The Customer Service people are very easy to talk to and they do not talk down to you. If you do have to send your handheld back for repair you will most likely get a bunch of new goodies in the box when you get it back.
  12. Boy I read that entire post and can honestly say that I know less now about what they are talking about than before I read it!! Is there anyplace where I can find info on all the jargon that is used?
  13. I use Photoshop 6 to resize all my photos. The average size of a photo I take with my 3MegaPixal camera is about 1.2M. After I resize it down to 300-500 pixels wide and lower the image quality a bit the size of the photo is about 50-80K. I to have dial-up service and I have to admit that it is a bummer when the photo on a page is over 200K.
  14. I bored a hole into a tree limb with a 2 1/5" forstener bit and sealed the opening with a test plug then stuck that end under a fallen tree. Very cool idea. Never thought about doing something like that.
  15. Just a quick question, how many pictures can you upload to your own profile page? I have right now about 6. I know that they have to be under 100K in size but it doesn't say how many. Is it based on an amount of space for each profile or the number of pics?
  16. I made one up here quickly this evening. I cut the 3" PVC to 9" and then put a cap on the one end and the test plug in the other. One of the nice features is that if you make it and find that it is a little to long you just cut some of the pipe off to the right length. No need to buy a new fitting and reglue. Here is a picture of the one that I made in about 5 min. The overall length is about 11". I can just get my hand inside the 3" pipe, if you have big hands or want more storage room I would lean toward using 4" PVC.
  17. Yes you can buy an ammo can for less than 5 bucks but you can hide a PVC Pipe easier. I am making one that is going to be covered with leafy cammo tape and mossy oak cammo tape, the kind hunters use to hide the outline of deer stands and what not, so that I can place it out in the open and still be tough to find! I don't know about your hiding skills but I think it will be tough to hide a square ammo can out in the open, theres just not much that is square in nature. Don't get me wrong ammo cans are great, its just that everyone expects an ammo can or tupperware container when they go look for a cache, this is something a little different. The only downside to the PVC pipe cache is that here in PA we can't place a pipe cache on State Forest Lands. But there is plenty of other places.
  18. Heck I never noticed those two buttons up there before, humm, what to do with them now I know they are there!
  19. I seen several posts about using PVC pipe to make a cache. The major issue with using PVC is the type of cap to use that allows easy access but also keep the cache waterproof. Well I know in the past I mentioned it but I finally went out and bought some, PVC Pipe Test Plugs. Their original purpose is to alow plumbers to seal off open ends in the plumbing system of a building so they can pressure test it for leaks, but I know of another use. The ones that I found are at HomeDepot and sell for $3.97 for the 3" and $4.97 for the 4". If you look you will have the same or more rapped up in a standard clean out cap and female threaded part. The nice thing about the ones that I found is that they need no tools to remove or install to make a waterproof seal. There is a wing nut on the top that you turn which compresses a rubber seal that expands against the inside on the PVC pipe. I hope this helps anyone out there that is planning on making a PVC Cache.
  20. I have a 2001 Ranger and bought the swivel mount for my Sportrak. I could not find any place to set it on the dash, it has no flat spot. If I remember right the 2000 Ranger dash is about the same as a 94 Ranger, so there is a flat spot in front of the passenger seat. It should work fine for you. I also bought a suction cup mount and found that when mounted on the windsheild that it blocked my veiw of the road when I looked to the right. Because of the shape of the dash and the size of the mount it filled the area from the dash to the rearview mirror. I ended up making my own mount that used the part from the swivel base that your gps clips into and added some custom bent aluminum so I could hook into the center vents. Works very well. Like I said if the dash is like my old 94 it should set right on the ledge on the passenger side just fine. mustanglx
  21. Very Nice! Thanks Jeremy. mustanglx
