  1. For those that may be interested I have analysed the losses of all my trackables that I own.

    Of the 55 TB's and coins I own I have released 30. Of the 30 in total 7 are TB dog tags and over the last 3 years I have only had one go missing ie: 14.2% lost. HOWEVER .. the balance of 23 were an assortment of coins and to date 7 are MIA and moved to an unknown location ie. 30.4%.

    I can only deduce from this that geocachers tend to keep or dare I say .. steal.. coins. Very sad indeed. You dont need to be a brain surgeon to realize the TB's are the way to go. Pity.

  2. Another great KZN event - well done DiePienaars - pity fluffy escaped out of the open gate - dogs that stray can be a real problem - never fear, they usually turn up at a local animal shelter! :D

  3. Hi KZN,

    I feel like the lone ranger looking for Tonto here in the Zululand region. Is there any other active cachers in the Richards bay area???

    Hey there Megaben......You are not alone, Im also herre in Richards Bay. I also feel a bit alone here bringing new bugs from other countries. I am pretty new at this, but its great fun. My mates think I have too much time on my hands! :D

    Yes Megaben was lonely in 2006 - there are a few more of us up here now - Jin & Tonic, Macbow and myself. Think Radebuddyz is still around in R/bay as well.

  4. We are thinking of going for a walk on Saturday the 6th September - in the berg - I think you all know where we are heading....a short walk to the top... if you are keen let us know and we can make it a plan.... :D

    Not just a walk in the park, the last time I climbed that sort of terrain I was practising for Kili.

  5. Neville - sorry Blackjack - what about Blackjack Bailey? That name does not exist. :unsure:

    Excellent! Request has been submitted - wait for my extreme makeover to take place soon! ;)

    Coming soon to a cache near you!

  6. For me a large part of the fun of geocaching are the coins and tb's. I have released about 20 over the last 10 months and have only hade one MIA - fortunately a cheap Travel Slug coin. The biggest risk is the new geocacher who has not read up properly. As a rule I never put TB's and coins of my own or others in a cache unless I feel the it is a quality cache that should not get muggled.

    To get back to newbies. The best story I heard of late is of a great micro/nano, GC17FGB , cache down the road from me where the container was a metal whistle that unscrewed to reveal the log. Imagine the look on the owners face when he read the following log "I remember crossing this bridge when it was still in use. Took Whistle left Undewater Hockey Pin" - and there went the whole cache!

  7. I recently published the first Wherigo cache in South Africa (and in Africa I think). An immediate confusion from many geocachers including myself is the "Unlock Cartridge" terminology on the cartridge download page. Why not "Complete" ?? Yes one unlocks levels in multi level computer games but that just does not work here. It should not be necessary to put long explanations onto cache pages about what to do when a cache is complete. Please lets change that wording before it becomes entrenched. Lets the cartridge cause the fun and confusion, not the completion. One "unlocks" something to start doing something not to end something done.

  8. I am running the player on an Airis T620 ppc with intergrated GPS running WM5. Apparently they are also called Mio. I only had to install the .Net framework. The link from the player download on the Wherigo site made that easy. Any ppc will do but it needs a gps, bluetooth or built in.

  9. For better or worse I became antisocial, did not talk to the wife etc for about 2 weeks and managed to publish SA's and I think Africa's 1st Wherigo. Its not perfect, yes you can emulate it as I have not encrypted anything - was a big enough learning curve, that can come later - but its there and it works. I have learnt a huge amount and start this thread to further the cache type in our part of the geocaching world.

  10. First, the standard questions and responses:

    Please uninstall the builder and install the newest version. If you have the newest version, please reinstall it.

    Did you allow time for the Google Map to load before clicking anything? In one of the first versions of the builder and emulator, I clicked on something before the map loaded and the application errored.

    What is the full error message? Is this it or is there a call stack (something that looks like some programming code names)?

    Yes done that, got latest, reinstalled.

    ************** JIT Debugging **************

    To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this

    application or computer (machine.config) must have the

    jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.

    The application must also be compiled with debugging

    enabled.

    For example:

    <configuration>

    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />

    </configuration>

    When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception

    will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer

    rather than be handled by this dialog box.

    Dont know if this helps.

    Occours even before opening a cartridge. Was working fine. Changed nothing. Maybe something to do with the maps loading.

  11. Been working on my first cartridge. From today every time I try to run the emulator I get an error "A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug? Line 440 Error: Expected"}" . The emulator has already opened and is at the point that the map is meant to load. It is doing this even with a cartridge that I have not changed since yesterday. Even the tutorial cartridge. Help.

  12. Events are not designed to lure people into geocaching.

    To quote off Groundspeaks website: -

    "Event Cache - Occasionally, local geocachers and geocaching organizations designate a time and location to meet and discuss geocaching. After the event the caches are archived. "

    To attend you have to already be a member or a guest of a member. Thats why you cannot find the co-ords on the web unless you are at least an ordinary member.

  13. If I've feel I've had a good look proportional to the cache difficulty then I will but if (like on a trip back from CT recently) I was jammed for time, briefly looked but could not find then I dont. Was just as well as was found the next day but someone else.

  14. When I started this thread I had absolutely no idea that there was any connection between the article and advert in Getaway and Geocaching.com and the game I played for fun and the reward of finding a cache, no matter how insignificant it is. I am a rural member and will never easily find 1000's. Like many I also "compete" for the priviledge of a FTF. And the prize I win - writing FTF on the log. We have all signed up to play the same game under the same Groundspeak rules, not the least of which is "No commercialism" which we all accepted on joining. Like CF I do everything to grow caching in my area as that leads to more hides and so the game grows. I am concerned about the tacit approval of the commercial aspects of this event by some participants. As to casting a stone - yes I have organised an event - "The North of the Tugela Get-together" last year and it was a huge success with many cachers travelling 100's of km to be there. The temptation to attend - a rumour of a few new caches that may have been hidden. In this cash and value driven society geocaching is a breath of fresh air - lets keep it that way.
