  1. I leave one of three versions of a Quoddy button in most caches. They are there for the taking.
  2. Quoddy

    Nav Screens

With my MeriColor I use the COMPASS screen with DISTANCE and EPE windows for hunting caches. Map screen (with tracks) occasionally when coming back out. I use Direct Route software (mapscreen) for getting to caches, and for driving in general
  3. A few years ago, when I was in the same position, I did all that I could to find that job. There is only so much writing and research that you can do. Realize this, and spend the excess available time doing something that you really enjoy, ie. catching. My wife encouraged me during that search period to play as much golf as I could. She realized that there is a limit to what can be done, and that I had to keep some sanity during that time. I wish that geocaching was around then. Good luck!
  4. MeriColor with DirectRoute. On the road and in the woods.
  5. If mapping is not an issue, you might want to consider a Geko 201. Inexpensive, very handy to carry, and feature packed. A family member just purchased one from: http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/5528.3.6...63/geko201.html for $117.95. I personally use a MeriColor with DirectRoute. Yes, I do need mapping. Other info: http://gpsinformation.net/geko-201.html
  6. I've now ordered 300 of Honeychile's buttons. Batches of the 3 Quoddy button versions, "Button of the Month Club buttons", and various geocaching buttons. I, too, plan to incorporate a button (similar to Natureboys great buttons) in an upcoming late spring cache. The price is within almost any budget; and Vicki (Honeychile) will help or even fully design one to your specifications. http://bumblebuttons.com/
  7. The REAL Quoddy goes with me on at least 90% of my caches.
  8. My membership is my way of saying "Thank You" to the staff for their efforts, and for the multi-faceted, non-commercial site we are fortunate to have.
  9. I had just the opposite naming problem. The breeder of my pup had named him "Geo" because of the perfect red triangle on top of his head. I changed it to "Quoddy" since I thought it was just TOO much! (Quoddy is a beautiful spot in Maine where my last dog and I shared many happy times)
  10. In a major metropolitan area the size of the area is much less using DirectRoute. I have all of New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, north to above Albany, NY, and east into Long Island, eastern CT and VT. In a lesser road dense area: I have all of Atlantic Canada, New Brunswick, Quebec, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Northern Mass. on a 64 mb card. The Mericolor with DirectRoute makes a great combination. It is fantastic for driving, yet still excellent for geocaching. I don't leave home without it.
  11. I had the same problem... so far I've had to manually toggle it back on from the map screen. Routing seems to toggle the track line setting off! I really want it on (almost) all the time. I've forgotten to toggle it on after switching to "point" on several occasions, and really needed it for the return. I have yet to find a way to LOCK that toggle on. The 3 settings you see not toggled on in the long list are the ones that routing shuts off automatically.
  12. I have used a MeriColor from the start and never found any reason to look for anything else. I use it for both geocaching and driving, and since installing DirectRoute it has become an excellent dual purpose GPSr.
  13. Here's a quick and easy conversion to use for any type of format. Just plug in your numbers and hit enter to convert it to every other type of coordinate you might use. http://www.jeeep.com/details/coord/
  14. 20 years as USAF Meteorologist 1960-1980. Served over 12 years in England, 3 in Germany, 3 in Florida, 1 in California, and 1 in misc. schools.
  15. I was always totally happy with my MeriColor. Now, with DirectRoute installed, it is truly a dual function GPSr. I will now only switch chips (to Topo) when going into the mountains/woods for at least a full day.
  16. I just voted, and was happy to do so. Thanks, Keith, for posting it. By the way, I did nothing near to this for my proposal....But 42 years later, I guess it's OK.
  17. As others have said: if you're going for road/route maps, skip S&D and get Direct Route. It is really good . Since getting DirectRoute, I sometimes switch "chips" to Topo, but only when I'm going into the woods for the whole day. I should mention I use a MeriColor.
  18. I still think you can't beat the Powered Suction cup mount . It is just so convenient to pop in and out, and not eat up the batteries. I've used it centered in my F-350 for about six months, but have just switched to the extreme left side of the windshield now that I have Direct Route. It's easier to see there, extending to the edge of the dash; and also easier to hit the buttons for changes.
  19. I use no more than one notch below all-out hot on my iron.
  20. I use a hot setting, but put a cotton cloth over the patch before ironing. It has worked well for me. I've even done this onto a Gore-Tex rain jacket.
  21. I took my geocaching name from my one year old Welsh Springer Spaniel, Quoddy. He goes with me on at least 90% of my hunts. Photo taken just after finding "On Top of Vermont".
  22. I recently installed 5.12 and Direct Route. Both seem to work REALLY well. As far as I can tell, only one block should be loaded onto each SD card. It will take up to 64 mb, as opposed to the Topo's 4 x 16mb. The ONLY problem I ran into was trying to load a 2nd region onto it. I've stored two additional regions onto new 64mb cards, and all seems to be well. By the way, so far I've found that Direct Route has been giving me very good routing. Routes that have taken me years to discover, are there in seconds. . I do still tend to use Topo for strictly geocaching days in the woods.
  23. Looking at your "FOUND" list, you show only 4 caches found. Go back and see which one you are missing, and re-log that cache.
  24. http://www.wheresgeorge.com/ will track any and score all bills entered. The bills that pass though a geocache do not count in their "Top 10" score, which is an entirely different kettle of fish. To answer a previous question, yes, the bills are normally stamped; or at least identified with the written wheresgeorge.com . I, personally, swap them in about 70% of caches...Great Fun.
  25. It looks as you are going "upscale" on your choice. I use The POWEREX MH-C401FS with the 2200 mAh POWEREX batteries to power my Mericolor. I get long hours from even this power-hungry unit. http://www.thomas-distributing.com/mhc401fs.htm
