  1. 2.51b changes include: "Added support for editing location in all position formats" Does this include making changes to a geocache coordinate? This is a nice feature to have when you are doing multi's but I haven't been able to find a mode where the editing can be done. Am I missing something? When I see "all position formats" I'm assuming this includes geocaches. Nice to report that I did 22 caches today without a freeze up.
  2. I saw this kind of behavior with my 76CSx one time last year. The error was on the order of 600 ft. and lasted for about 1 hour. I tried on/off/on, new batteries, etc. to no effect. Suddenly, about an hour later, things snapped back to normal. Several other forum members reported the same thing from across the country, so I'd suspect an incident with the satellite constellation, either accidental or intentional.
  3. Thanks so much for the help! I already have .bmp icons from MS Streets&Trips that I can use.
  4. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I export a gpx file from GSAK containing all my unfound caches and want to put it into my Nuvi 660 as custom pois. This works fine using POI Loader - most recent version. I fail to get any icons brought across with this data that will show up on the Nuvi screen. Is there some way to make this happen? It would be nice to see cache icons on the screen while driving. When I downloaded cache info into the Nuvi as waypoints, the cache icons came across. The BIG problem is that the NUVI 660 has no way to delete waypoints except individually. I went through the delete routine 500 times to get rid of the waypoint data I didn't want. I'm not going there again... Help appreciated!
  5. I've seen the compass needle disappear on my 76CSx occasionally and have correlated it to getting close to magnetic things like key containers. I haven't tried to do anything scientific, but my experience is that if the GPSr comes within 6-8 inches of a reasonably strong magnet, the compass loses calibration. All I do is recalibrate and things are ok again. You may ask, why get the GPSr close to the magnet? Well, you find the container and open it. Set it down to sign the log and guess what, you need two hands free to sign. The GPSr get placed nearby, sometimes close enough to be affected. Yes, I know I could be more careful about the distance, but sometimes I'm not... Flames not necessary -
  6. Magellan GPS 4000 circa 1996. It still works. Next unit was a Garmin eMap. Vowed to never get another Magellan - good decision.
  7. Saturday I was out caching and my 400t took a tumble from the seat of a park bench onto the concrete below (about 20 inches). It powered off at impact. I crossed my fingers and it powered up ok but something funny happened. I selected the geocache I was currently at from the list so I could make the log entry. When the cache was displayed I got a highlighted region containing a single line with the name of the cache. No difficulty or terrain stars or anything. Below it, where the red arrow and distance to cache are normally found, was a highlighted region with a small compass (maybe 5/8" diameter) and distance to the cache. The compass had an arrow across it like the full screen compass page. Everything appeared to be functioning correctly except for this. I powered the unit down and, upon restart, the former screens were there like they should be. The cosmetic damage was limited to a small region of the rubbery coating on the wheel that peeled off and a slight scrape on the metallic coated housing on the back near the case screw counterbore. I had installed a screen protector from OneStopCacheShop and it worked as it should. There's stuff lurking in the Colo. that the Garmin folks are not telling us about. I have not seen any documented screen details that looked like this. Maybe it's something in a different profile from the one I customized... I'm going to start using a lanyard attached to a belt loop to prevent this in the future. I'll deal with it snagging on stuff... Anyone have a similar experience?
  8. You might try Meguiar's PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish. It has a mild abrasive that is designed to remove light scratches in plastic.
  9. If waypoint name is: %Name by %By (%Dif/%Ter) with a length of 36 char. and Cache description is: %Name by %By (%Dif/%Ter) %Code %typ1%con1 the Colorado will blow up as I described.
  10. I came upon an interesting problem this morning when I generated a gpx file from gsak for the Roseville area. I'm headed there for an event cache this afternoon. The prior gpx file I generated was to load a poi database into my Nuvi 660. I had the cache description, waypoint name and length modified from the normal GSAK default so that more info would show on the Nuvi. I forgot to revert to defaults before I created the gpx file for Roseville. I loaded this file to my 400t and the boot seemed normal. When I selected a cache, however, the name, difficulty, etc. info at the heading of the page was blank. When I pressed the right soft key to back out the Colorado would shut off. This was a repeatable behavior for any cache in the list (and their names showed up normally on the list). I was able to recover by deleting all the gpx files from the Colo. internal memory including "current.gpx" and "Position.gpx". Deleting just the Roseville file didn't fix things. I reloaded the gpx files that had been good, since the Colo. doesn't modify these files after it parses them. I created a new Roseville.gpx using the following (what I believe to be default) GSAK settings: Cache description: %Name by %By (%Dif/%Ter) Waypoint name: %code Maximum characters: 15 I've changed this switch from the default... Include GSAK extra fields in report = NO Sorry for being long winded, but has anyone experimented with description and waypoint name tags that would still work but display a bit more? What is the "proper" GSAK setup to use? Thanks, George
  11. In a previous thread I noted strange boot behavior on my Colorado 400t that I have traced (on a preliminary basis) to gpx files placed on the SD card (SanDisk ultra 2gig). Bootup time of roughly 1 minute was observed when 4 files (total of 12MB) were on the card. This time was duplicated consistently with successive power cycles. I moved the files to the internal memory. The first reboot took the usual minute. Subsequent reboots now take 21 seconds. Has anyone else noticed this type of behavior? It is as though the files placed into the internal memory are re-saved in a binary format vs. xml once they are parsed. Since the gpx files are not changed in any manner by logging activities (found, not found, etc.) in the geocaching profile, it makes sense that they would be converted into a more machine readable format. Why this doesn't happen with files on the SD card, I don't know. I'm just speculating here. I don't have any block diagrams or source code to examine to confirm my hypothesis. Your thoughts? George
  12. I have 4 gpx files on the SD card with about 12Mb total file size, but only about 1000 caches total. I decided to move them to the internal memory to see what happens. First boot took about 1 minute as before. Second and subsequent boots take about 21 seconds. There seems to be a performance difference here that I will investigate more. I also have a City Nav NT map on the SD and will move it to internal to see if performance improves even more.
  13. I've had my 400t for a couple of weeks now and have been learning more about it each time I power it up. I have noticed a new boot behavior that has me puzzled. Originally the unit would show the Garmin logo, load maps, and then display a map with a blinking question mark over the position triangle while the unit was acquiring sats. Now the unit says it is loading maps and takes much longer, but when the map appears the sats are acquired and it is generating a good fix. The first case took about 20 sec. to display the map. Now it takes about 1 minute. I had not turned the unit on for about 2 days. I've swapped between different profiles (automotive and geocaching) recently - not much else. Have any of you seen this behavior? Hard reboot in order?
  14. Have you measured them for length? Not all AA batteries are alike. If they are a bit short, they may lose contact and cause the unit to turn off. A number of the rechargeables are fractionally longer than the standard AA and will break battery terminals with time (see previous forum posts). Seems to be a particular problem with the GPSMAP 76 series. I'm really careful with mine to extract and insert the batteries without cocking them at much of an angle (tough to do on the contact with the spring).
  15. Received the Colorado protector from OneStopCacheShop last night and it went on without a hitch. Funny thing, the spray that came with it had an InvisibleShield label... If the urethane material is different it's not apparent - and the adhesive is the same. BTW, using one of the urethane film protectors on a PDA is a matter of personal preference. I applied an InvisibleShield to my Tungsten E2 and found that there was quite a bit of friction between the protector and stylus. I eventually removed the urethane and went with the mylar (I'm assuming) protector from Palm. The surface is much smoother and friction free.
  16. No scroll on 660... Edit choices are: Change Name, Change Map Symbol, Change Phone Number, and Delete. Delete allows you to delete the single, selected favorite. I went through and deleted nearly 500 individually. I won't make that mistake again. Custom POIs from now on.
  17. I have found no "delete screen" on the 660. I used the "delete all user data" screen by pressing and holding the lower right corner of the touchscreen during power-on. A confirmation box appears asking if you really want to delete all user data. 3 times in a row I did this and the waypoints are still there... Aren't they "user data?" Gotta be a better way- Listen up Garmin
  18. Move file \Garmin\gmapsupp.img from the 300 to \Garmin\ folder on the SD card using windows explorer. Worked for me on my 400t.
  19. Do you mean using the Colorado to auto-route to the geocaches using Navigator? That works for me. I just put it in Automotive profile, select the "Where-to" shortcut, geocaches, select the cache I want and it routes the roads I need to get near it. Thanks! That's what I was looking for. Since I have a Nuvi for the car, it never dawned on me to look at the automotive profile. OTOH, why not make some of this functionality available while in geocaching profile so one doesn't need to switch. On my 76CSx I had the navigation method set to "prompted" so I could choose between following roads or off road when I was starting the navigation to a waypoint. When I got near to the cache I would recalculate using the off road selection. This would be the "best", as far as I am concerned.
  20. Is there a way to delete waypoints (favorites) uploaded to a Nuvi 660 via gpx file from GSAK? I've read some threads that say 1-at-a-time. I don't want to go through that each time I upload. I tried the "delete all user data" 3 times in a row and the waypoints were still there. I deleted the "current.gpx" file from the \Garmin\gpx folder on the unit. It created another one. I downloaded the "current.gpx" file to GSAK, deleted the unwanted waypoints, and reloaded it back to the unit. Still there... Are there hidden files on the Nuvi that are not visible under windows explorer even when it is set to show hidden? That's my guess. Does the Nuvi treat custom poi's the same? Frustrated! Help appreciated, George
  21. I had trouble unlocking City Nav NT from the MapSource unlock wizard. All would work fine until I received the error regarding no customer code. I went to the Garmin website and did the unlock there without any problem. I input the 8-character coupon code and GPSr serial number and received the 25-character unlock code immediately on the web page and a minute later via email. I had already registered the GPSr on the Garmin site...
  22. Here's another one. How about making geocaches show up in the waypoint list (and the geocache list) so I can navigate to them with City Navigator like I do with my 76CSx. I miss this ability. Maybe a "Navigate to Waypoint" selection in the geocache related menus (that shows up if City Nav maps are present)? I realize that many do not use CN, but it is handy - and perhaps makes me a lazier cacher
  23. Part of the Colorado's display problem is that the pixels are smaller. The 60CSx nad pixels measuring 237x233 microns. The Etrex HCx has 187x195 micron pixels. The Colorado has 158x158 micron pixels. The transflective display allows sunlight to pass through the display and be reflected back through to the user by means of a reflective inner layer. Since the Colorado's pixels are smaller, each pixel is capable of passing fewer photons through it - hence dimmer performance with higher resolution. Some qualitative improvement might be made if Garmin would modify some of the color schemes such as how roads show up against the map background. Allowing the user to modify the color mapping would be a nice feature. What you need to make the display useful is contrast and brightness. Bright ambient lighting reduces contrast...
  24. I have City Nav NT 2008 on my 400t and it works without a problem. I only loaded Calif. and Nev., since I don't travel out of the area that often. You can see the shaded topo information (but not the coutour lines) when both CN and Topo are selected. George
  25. I would like to see a GPX file manager added to the colorado so that you could carry many files and select which one was in use at the time. Each one could have 2000 caches in it.
