  1. Read spy history and your see they put cachers to shame with contaiers.  My favorite is a screwon lid divice that instead of loosing the lid you tithtened it when your turned it in the usual direction.  This was primarly used in big buttons on a over coat.

    cheers

Oh, there was plenty of other stuff there that was also a 'great hide', but could a coat button be a cache? I only posted a pic of that which might be somehow comparable to a cache hide.

I mean, hey, if you can get someone to get you clearance for Langley, the CIA spy museum there has a great stump hide example there - it was in the woods outside a Russian airbase.

  2. So I was at the KGB museum this morning in Moscow, and damned if they didn't have some mighty fine cache camo going on. I took some pictures from various angles for your viewing pleasure.

"First to Find" has a whole other context here..

  3. I just returned from a short business trip to Moscow, Russia. I only had a few hours off and no cache was nearby. :D So I literally dropped a TB in the "wildness" of a Moscow park. In case any cacher is going there soon, you can pick it up at N55 42.636, E037 32.499 - at the base of a tree under leaves and snow...

    Released in Russia

    Olaf aka TravelingViking

I just got to Moscow on the 29th of Dec and will be here for the next two years. I'm pretty sure I remember driving by that ski jump (I mean, how many can there be?) on the way to a restaurant with a friend. As soon as I can find out where that was, I'll see if I can get back and find the TB.

  5. [disclaimer on]

Yes, I did search the forums first. If I missed the topic.. well, oops.

    [/disclaimer off]

Is the maps (just below the ROT13 decoder on a default page) disappearing from the cache pages a planned thing? I don't remember seeing any mention of it and haven't seen anyone else ask about it yet either.

I know that the links are still there to open the various maps of ones choosing, but I for one always liked having the small map including just to give me a quick reference before I opened them and started clicking and zooming, etc for details. Did everyone else hate 'em or something? License/linking issue? Preperation for any upcoming map change?

    Just curious.. thx.

  6. HEY!  Somebody needs to go kick the server, it's totally sh*t the bed.

    Time: 1040 Local

I guess someone did.. 'cause it went away for 10 min and now suddenly it's going gangbusters again.

  7. Now this is hilarious. In the links section of the site, GC is not listed but NC is, with the following description..

"Navicache is one of the two largest Geocaching websites in the world. "

In that spirit: "CurlyKrakow is the most prolific cacher in the world.*"

(*Among cachers whose handles consist of references to hair and a character from the television show My So-Called Life.)

  8. Hello,

Just a quick question? Who is the approver for the Santa Cruz, CA, area? I've submitted two caches last weekend and am interested in finding out when they might be approved. Secondly, is is best just to submit a new cache and sit back. Else, is there a mailing list that I should also send an announcement to of the new cache awaiting approval?

    Thanks in advance!

    Regards,

    Steve

    1. FYI, this is really more of a regional question for the West and Southwest forum. This area is actually to "Discuss new features (or feature requests), bugs, etc. specific to the Geocaching.com site."

    2. Regarding your actual question, Hemlock is the approver for Northern California, though I believe he may be on vacation and SoCalAdmin is covering. California is a big state with more cache volume than most. It may take a bit longer than normal, and remember that admins are volunteers doing it on their own time. There is in fact an active thread regarding the same question about recent delays in approving CA caches in the above mentioned forum.

BTW: Looked at your profile, you guys were at the picnic in SV right? Think I recognized you from the picture. Newest geocacher award, right? Welcome again.

    edit: picnic added

  9. Just to make sure everyone's aware, The Onion is a fake news site. Everything there is a joke. Most of it's pretty funny, too.  :bad:

Side note: I was listening to a radio talk show last night that's known for presenting jokes in a serious way. If you're a first time listener, you'd be likely to think that they were being serious most of the time. Last night, they had set up a call from Governor Schwarzenegger... When he came on, I listened very closely and the guy they had doing his voice was PERFECT. I actually thought it was him until he said a few things that a Governor with Presidential aspirations wouldn't say. Every caller, I mean EVERY caller they took thought he was for real, despite the occasional (very low key) announcements that it wasn't really the governor.

Moral of the story: Take everything you read/see/hear with a grain of salt.  ;)

Lemme guess.. The Phil Hendrie Show?

I remember the first time I heard that show and I took the bait hook line and sinker. Fortunately, I was not dumb enough to call in.. I just rolled around on the floor in convulsions of tears and laughter instead. I wish it was on the radio where I live now.. I miss it. :bad:

  10. :D  September 13, 2003 by <removed to protect the guilty> (160 found)

He's actually got a few really good caches out our area.. but also has many film cans tossed in the shrubs. You just have to pick and choose which ones to do.

Edit: removed name from the orignal log quoted.

  11. I will definitely have to hit that Balboa Park place, then.

Where's a cheap (and safe) motel near there? It would be cool if it were run by a geocacher! I'm dreaming, of course... :)

I have a feeling I am going to seriously regret budgeting only 2 days of time outta my vacation to spend in San Diego! :)

If you really want an interesting (and exceptionally cheap, about $16/night) place to stay, I spent last Memorial Day crashing (and caching!) at a hostel right in the middle of the Gaslamp.

Definitely not for the faint of roommate(s) or anybody who goes to bed early, 'cause you're on the 2nd story right above the bars and eateries that are going full-tilt right up 'til last call (2-3am), but it's mere blocks from the 'downtown' caches (I think I picked up four or five within .5mi) and only about 1-1.5mi from the Park Ave entrance into Balboa Park. If you like having crazy travel stories to tell when you get back home, this is a great place to stay. If you want a room to yourself and watching the evening news or SportsCenter before bed, it won't be your thing... but I just thought I'd throw it out there for you as an idea.

BTW, if you're a sports fan at all, see if the viewing platform for the PETCO Park construction is open.. it's nearby and this place is going to be a gem for watching baseball.

  12. :D Ban Geocaching because we destroy the vegetation? Letter boxing is more environmentally safe because it has more precise instructions to finding the cache? Are you asking to be flamed? Before we ban this sport, let's examine some issues first.

#1 Man has been destroying the enviornment long before geocaching. I.e. Strip Mining, Logging, Nuclear Bomb testing, river contamination and the list goes on. Finally we are starting to realize that just what we are doing does have cause and effect and we are starting to do something about our environment. However, 3rd world nations don't seem to get this and they are ruining their part of the world.

#2 Geocaching brings money to the local economy in the form of Hotel reservations, food, gas, etc. Whenever you go caching in an area and you need some munchies where do you go?

#3 By your own words, you are a hypocrite  :D -- You say ban geocaching because it harms the environment. Yet you yourself still geocache and you admit to bushwacking for a cache. As Jesus said in Matthew 7:1 - 5

Judge not, that you not be judged. For with what judgement you judge, you will be judged; and with the same measure you use it will be measured back to you. and why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother 'Let me remove the speck out of your eye'; and look a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye.

#4 What would you have your kids out doing? Hmm I personally love having them go to the mall and shop.. Nothing better to do on a nice sunny day. NOT!!!.. It's a great time for the entire family to get out and do something and go somewhere that they have never been to before. It's a lot better then having them waste thier day sitting in front of the mind numbing tv or the brainless computer.

:D Face it, Geocaching is here to stay. You are not going to change it, and it will never be banned. Cache Owners on the other hand maybe need to be a little bit more detailed on the instructions to their caches. I know in my area, if you have to get off the trail, the ower tells you this. But if the cache is in an evironmentally instable area, the cache owner tells you not to get off the path. But don't go trying to ban a sport simply because of a few bad brushes with nature.

Have you really been a member since March '02? 150 posts shows some degree of forum participation, and you still can't tell when one of the regulars is just bored and stirring up the pot? Wow.

  13. I am planning a very cool southern California vacatiion in May.  I am spending most of my time in LA, but because I want ot see Mt. Palomar, I have decided to spare a couple of days in San Diego.

So what I want to know is:  where is a CHEAP (hostel or campground?) place to stay in San Diego near a very cool location that I have got to NOT miss while I am there?

Especially, what are caches which show ultimate San Diego coolness for an out-of-town visitor?

My interests tend towards anything geeky and scientific, especially astronomy, and really cool graphics, just in general.  But I am willing to check out anything genuinely cool.

I'll be there mid-week around the second week of May.

If you come down out of the mountains and head into SD proper, here's where I've been.

The Gaslamp District. There are some fun urban micros in great places.

    1. I recommend "Who's Horton? 2" in Horton Plaza.. I've heard this mall described as "Dr. Suess meets M.C. Esher" and it certainly fits. Fun place to be, cache or no cache.

    2. Conventional View is a great spot at dusk or after dark, with incredible views of the Coronado Bridge. As a bonus, Wet Cement happens to be along the way if going by foot between these two.

    3. After you're done caching, the Gaslamp is the place to be after dark for a jumping good time. If you want something a little mellower, but still fun.. any bar/restaurant in Pacific Beach is also a great place to unwind.

Balboa Park. Tons of museums, trails and of course, the zoo.

    1. I've actually only done Balboa Behind the Scenes personally, but it happens to drop you right in the middle of some of the best stuff. If you're there on a Sunday afternoon, go visit some of the HPR cultural houses. Spreckels Pavilion (spelling?) is pretty neat, the Globe theatre is nearby and you're only 5 mins walk from a great bridge view over Hwy 163 too. PS, if you stop by the House of Ukraine, tell them Nick says "hi".

I'm sure others will pipe up too, but those are the ones I've done and enjoyed.

  14. If daylight hours (to go caching, of course..) are any consideration, then Sunday afternoons after 3pm are about the only time I'm free.

If we're just getting together for some grub or something, the evenings I regularly have off are Wednesdays and Saturdays, after 6pm.

  15. Anyone from the Redding/Shasta County area want to have a cache event or go group caching?

I come in and wander around the forums for the first time in forever, and lookee here what I find! Locals! Yay!

My schedule is nuts most of this month, what with a 9-5 job, a PT evening job, and a work/rent trade that takes up most of my Saturdays. BUT.. come next month, I should have every other Saturday off and would love to meet up with some of my fellow cachers around these parts. It even gives me some extra incentive to get my pending cache ideas out in the field pronto.

Also, I ran into the Kokopeli's in the field a few months ago and we tossed around the idea of an event cache for North Staters too (I know some folks in Chico/Paradise have done one recently). Might be fun to invite them up to try out some of ours or something. Just an idea. Please suggest others.

It's true.. I was said 'friend at a computer' helping Dru when he found his (Moraccan). Only half of assist on Ventura Kid's find of Destiny's Door though, Team Dakiba was more direct one that one.

That said, I suppose I should send in my hat coupon from two weeks ago.. but it really seems like it might make more a better souvenir (or trade item) on it's own. I actually think the hat looks kinda lame! icon_rolleyes.gif

    Dru,

This cache has been archived since both of us did it, but it seems like the Braille Trail there at Pierce would be perfect for placing a new one along these lines.

UPDATE: Huh, it looks like there's another missing cache nearby too. But this one is suspended not archived. It appears to have been a vacation cache, now missing for 4+ months and and unrepaired for 3+ months per the logs. I would think that a new one by locals would take priority. Ideas?

2ND UPDATE: The placer of the 2nd cache referenced above hasn't found a cache in 5+ months. That would lean towards inactivity, I'd think.

  18. Somehow, at some point, Folklore ended up on my watch list.

It's 'merely' a virtual, and no one seems to have logged it in about 6 months, but the pictures alone (see the 9/23/02 log) make it seem like one of the those incridible local landmarks you'd never find otherwise. Not too far a diversion from your route to Colorado Springs either.

Love to see this one in person myself someday.
