  1. Wow.... That is one bit of sad news.... But then again to have Andy in on this is also great. Erik it was great to have met you and Carol on your trip down to our continent. Although I have only been in this whole mad sport of caching for a year and a day, it was great to see the email come through from you on the approval of my caches. I could only imagine how much time and dedication it must have taken on your part to just do all them reviews, I take my hat off to you. Well done. But I see the point you have in appointing Andy to this and I cannot think of a better person to take on the job. Excellent choice. Thanks once again for the amazing job you have done for all of us in South Africa, go well and enjoy the rest. To Andy. Congratulations and all the best. I hope that you do not get too overwhelmed by the slingshot cacher.... LOL.
  2. Oh no.... Well we are planning for the 12th of April so hopefully there is no more problems by that time. Otherwise I will have a great excuse not to go back to work if I am up on the mountain and war breaks out. It is quite a bad one if you have a place booked there this weekend though.... Eish!

Well done Redglobe on the 600.... Ama-Zing.... That came very quick.
  7. Scary..... 1: There are more than 5 times more caches in a 100km radius of Gauteng than there are caches in the Free State. 2: I have found more caches than there are caches in the Free State. 3: Crystal Fairy has hidden more caches than there are caches in the Free State. 4: The last three caches hidden in the Free State have not been found yet, since February. 5: Nearly half of the caches in the Free State have been placed there since December. (Hello Not Blonde)
  8. 12th of April.... looks to be the date. Non Event as yet, but who knows? Cave-man and Mikes Pass may be on the cards. They won't let me up Mikes Pass with the Corsa 4x4 so anyone going with a 4x4, I am bumming a lift....

    First To Find

Ha I can claim a FTF in a good time while down in Durbs for the Inspector is coming to town event cache. Although it was with Noddy and Global Rat. We were having a good chat over a few drinks after the event and Noddy thought he would check to see if any new caches were published in the area while we were enjoying the event. And sure as can be, there was one published, just a kilo or so away. So what do we do.... we hop into the car and go find it. We get the FTF in a joint effort. And with just over 2100 finds between the three of us, we forget to bring a pen along. So off we go to find a pen with cache in hand. What madness....... But a FTF is a FTF. Oh did I mention this was all done at 1am in the morning.

Hello Carbon Hunter and Cincol, in Qatar from a very wet and slightly cold, South Africa.....
  13. I get the same on my Etrex Vista HCx although indoors it varies. I have been down to 6 meters. Right now I get between 25-32 meters though. But it is raining and heavily overcast. The WAAS bit involves a set transmitter that the satellite communicates back and forth with to keep an accurate reading of the position of a set co-ordinate on land. I am not aware if the one in South Africa is up yet. I recall it was supposed to be in the Bronkhorstspruit area. So aside from the satellite triangulating your position, it also makes sure that the triangulation of the WAAS tower corresponds to what it should be, therefore it makes the accuracy of your position better. That is why you get the 3 meter accuracy on the GPS. I guess that the WAAS must be functioning in SA as I go back to some far away caches and get spot on each time. Does anyone know if the WAAS reference point is up in SA. I did training with Avnic back in 2005 and they mentioned it been in the pipeline. What is the battery life like?

Congrats to hennieventer on 100 caches found.
  15. Find someone with the other two units and maybe try a test with them. Great way to test the units is all head for the same caches following the same route and then comparing accuracy at the cache. Try for heavy cover and gorges. I like the one handed ability of the Colorado but the price, eish!
  16. Price on the unit - R6400? What mapping does that include. Looks like preloaded SD cards to me, or does it come with Garmap? We need a run down on it's accuracy.... GPS Wars here we go again. Does it match up to the Vista HCx and the GPSMap 60 CSx under cover? Down gorges and the like? Keep us informed....

Well done Carbon Hunter. It would seem that you have found all the caches in Qatar by now.....
  18. Is it worth the effort to go find this one seen as the guy who placed it has never found any and last logged in in 2006. I would only make the effort if i was going to be in the area but would not make a special trip for it. Like you say it might not be there, but to go to all the effort on a maybe, i somehow doubt i would make the effort, but then again if it was going to be with other plastic nutters maybe, You know us mad nutters..... Well I think we figured it all out even on our trip... Who needs a cache if there is the reward of them views. The cache will just be a bonus. But it was put up there for someone to find so why not....
