  1. Interesting that i placed a cache ( GC10Y00 ) very near a BM that is quite obvious. It even has a witness post. ( OZ0551 ) 23 have logged the cache but only 2 the benchmark.
  2. The “State Of Colorado 2003 mile high marker” might be in a Colorado database. Perhaps someone will have a clue. I don't. Guess that makes me clueless.
  3. found whitney by looking here GT1809 GT1811 Did not find morristown 1924. There are lots of discs named center. Too many for my dialup to deal with today!
  4. In opinion of ngs (according to their published information) the mark is not officially destroyed unless you can see the actual numbers and letters that identify the mark. then if you can confirm that you saw it out of it's setting, it is destroyed. The proper report to ngs would be not found.
  5. The answer is 1903. My bench mark was placed in 1903 as part of a leveling project across Idaho, Wyoming and Utah, along the railroad. DaveD provided the info and a link to the PDF containing the report. That report provided some interesting. unrelated reading, as reports often do. The article on locating Honolulu, Guam, Midway and Manila was very interesting. It took over six months of research and running back and fourth by steamship to determine the precise time lag on the new undersea cable, in order to synchronize clocks to make an accurate star based observation. Here is the link to the NOAA Central Library, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Annual Reports Thanks Dave.
  6. I found this really great tutorial on GPS while surfing around. Good info on differential GPS. HERE
  7. You can still have your probing devices but you cant upload them.
  8. CallawayMT, Perhaps you could share the information on how you found out the date G 10 was set, etc.. The only option i could think of would be to head for the county recorder's office and see if a surveyor recorded any notes referring to K 4. Any ideas on how those letter/number designations were generated?
  9. Found my first stone benchmark yesterday. NV0739 Just want to get some discussion going as to how old this type of mark might be. Checked the forums and google, but there was not much as to dates other than, "brass discs became standard around 1904". This one is located near UPRR (Oregon Short Line) tracks that were established in 1883. NGS shows this as unknown as to monumentation. The mark is in open BLM land with nothing around it for miles except for the railroad and recently opened farm ground across the tracks. This mark is made from basalt. http://img.geocaching.com/benchmark/lg/1fc...abc6bbbf9f6.jpg
  10. Thanks to someone for fixing the typo in the topic heading. I could not figure out how to do that.
  11. The one with the big arrow in the sandstone makes me wonder if the apprentice was one of those whom talked way too much and the surveyor assigned him that job to get some relief while doing some calculations.
  12. That's what i want to see. Different arrowhead there. How many different ones? BTW mine's brass/bronze. The mark is listed as destroyed with NGS and i think that went into someone's collection. Don't know who's tho.
  13. Definitely a significant recovery. Looks like not too many people go there.
  14. THAT bridge has a hand rail on it. Is that not a walkway between the handrail and tracks. Bet the trains don't go very fast on THAT bridge. I would go there, but only after checking out the habits of trains in the area; schedules, speed, etc. It should be possible to pick a time of day when no trains will be present. Remember, trains do have stuff hanging out occasionally.
  15. I wonder if anyone has initiated a list of pictures of different arrow depictions on reference discs. Most seem to be a plain stick drawing of an arrow, but not always. Did you ever find one that caused you to say, "wow, nice arrow"? Here is a really nice one with full feathers and a really nice arrowhead on it. NV0957
  16. Wondering how long it will be before windows live makes it to Rockey Bar, Idaho.
  17. I have an explodist 300 and I like it real well. Not being able to upload waypoints or maps is a drawback. This thing seems to be real accurate though, for a handheld. There are a lot of big power lines in my area and I end up turning the magnetic compass off a lot because such things don’t work in the vicinity of big power lines. As far as keying in coordinates: If you wait 'till you are near your destination, you don't have so many numbers to change. The instruction manual stinks so badly that I have been considering writing one and posting it in the forums.
  18. Is it Possible that the boulder was imported and placed above the underground mark? I have seen at least one tri station in my area where this was done. Evidenced by the boulder not being of a type that would be native to the immediate area of the station.
  19. Benchmark hidden! Go and find it! Go and look, follow the to-reach. USGS couldn't find it. Lost and waiting for you. Go! Holtie22, I've seen that paste before. I love it. I know of at least one where the USGS couldn't find it because they didn't get out of the pickup. NV0493
  20. I knew someone would have the complete invo. The one cross appears to be dashed. I thought possibly faded Thanks jwahl.
  21. On terraserver topos and photos there are these little crosses that correspond to the corners or 7 1/2 minute series paper topo maps. I just noticed there are 2 of them in a photo of the area near me. A closer examination of the topo revealed what appears to be the remains of one that may have been erased. the erased one corresponds to the fainter one in the aerial photo. Is this possibly a nad27/nad83 thing? any ideas? http://www.terraserver.microsoft.com/image...Y=23742&W=3
  22. I wonder if NPS employees or their friends/relatives sell metal detectors on ebag. Sorry about the negative attitude.
  23. Anyone have any ideas on doing a partial county? My neighboring county, Owyhee county, Idaho covers 7666 square miles. That makes for a very large map. It would be nice to confine mapping to longitude and latitude boundaries. BTW, that county is mostly empty of people. Nice.
  24. psyclawps it's not a question of right or wrong. The Usgs is a separate agency from ngs, even though a lot of ngs marks include the usgs logo. Usgs has never posted it's database on the web. Ngs has. The geocaching benchmark database is built from that web presence. Additionally the geocaching benchmark database has not been updated for about 6 years. If you want recent ngs info you can go to their online database. http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl . I have been reading these forums for about 2 months now and they are a goldmine of such info. Especially the benchmark forum. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=10 There is even a user who posts there who appears to work ar USGS. I have seen his posts that indicate he has access to their files. Or maybe he lives near their headquarters. Anyway the only way you will get access to their database is to go there and look. The fun is in the hunt.
