  1. Garmin Oregon is up to 650t with the release of the 600 series. No Oregon 2000 as far a I know.
  2. You want to cache for free??? In the real world someone has to pay the freight! What do you think it costs for a building, computers, staff, Hamster feed, etc. etc. to make Geocaching.com possible??? Grow up or go away!
  3. Hello, If this is completely new device, have you downloaded any Garmin drivers. Go to garmin site to find them. Just a guess, hope this helps. Peoria Bill :>)
  4. Just a note: Serial Port will need to be the same speed PC/GPS typically 9600baud and same Com Port usually 1-4. Also, back then the card is only SD not SDHC.. I would search around for SD 2MB memory. Good Luck
  5. Did not know anything about charter membership when I signed up. I simply thought the site provided some value and deserved my support. Where else could I have this much fun for only $30.00/yr?
  6. Hello, Don't know if he is walking or riding. If he is walking, the 62st is a good choice. Has maps of the US that are good enough. If he is riding, I like the Delorme PN60, since it is easy to navigate by selecting hiking or driving mode. Also, Delorme comes with Maps of the US. Delorme also offers Afghanistan maps with the military SE GPS. With either one, if he can identify the site on the GPS map, just select it and the GPS will navigate to it. The backtrack feature is useful in getting back to the start point. I am former military a long time ago. Map and compass is still important, but these new devices would have made my life a lot easier. Best of luck whatever you choose and thanks for your service.

  8. Caching in No. Dallas, Tx. I stuck my hand in a hole in a tree to retrieve a cache. I saw the ants, but they were little ones, not fire ants, and I didn't figure they could hurt. When I withdrew my hand it was covered with ants. Ok for a second or two, then they started to bite in chorus. Hand swelled and itched for days.
  9. This is a marine type GPS circa 1992. You might try the forum for buying and selling GPS,etc.
  10. OK if you are maintaining it for a short time. If the cache owner moves, then he/she needs to get rid of local caches. Someone should adopt the cache or archive it. Despite all the promises and good intentions, this is the best course.
  11. Give Delorme a call. They have some folks that work with business and professionals. Peoria Bill :>)
  12. You do not need to spring for a 650 to get a very good handheld GPS. There are numerous cheaper and/or older units that will work fine. If you are using the phone in the manner you describe, then maybe OK. Just remember, no outlets in the woods, even a little bit of moisture will kill you phone, and don't drop it (phone)if that's the only way you know to get back to the trailhead. Peoria Bill :>)
  13. Find the nearest 2,000 caches where ever I happen to be. Would not need "Cache along a route" anymore.
  14. I was going to suggest the Etrex 20 or 30. You son can use this unit for a long time.
  15. I believe they made the PN-20. Here is some material to give you some background. http://www.gpsreview.net/delorme-pn-40/ These units are pretty cheap on Amazon or Ebay. If you don't have the budget, how about just working with the units the students own? Peoria Bill :>)
  16. Hello, Just to give you "the rest of the story", you can also use GSAK's publish logs function. Works great for large uploads, adding pictures to logs and a variety of GPS units. See details at: http://www.gsak.net/v80/hs46070.htm Regards Peoria Bill :>)
  17. Just an idea for a future trip. Instead of having to wait till you get to Charleston, why not create "Caches along a route". You can cache rest stops, etc then load your Charleston query once you get there? Take care Peoria Bill :>)
  18. Hello I am new to the games I would like to know how to function my GPS explorist 500LE oui9 I know that know an old model but I'd like to use. I am not able to transfer the cache on the GPS. This model gps holds 200 caches. It has either a battery adapter or rechargeable battery. Since this GPS has a removeable SD card, you can use a program like GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) to send a "filename.gs" file to the GPS or copy to the SD card. If you are not already using queries, then you may find it useful to join GC.com as a premium member to get the ability to create queries. I am sure you can find a French version of the manual on line or contact Magellan product support. Hope this helps. Peoria Bill :>)
  19. If you are considering the 450, why not check out: http://gpsinformation.info/penrod/etrex30/etrex30.html the Etrex20/30 models. Lots of new benefits and none of the critical flaws of the older Oregon series. The later models got better for daytime visibility 450/450t.
  20. I like the Garmin NUVI2595LMT est $199.00. It will give you a great auto GPS with lifetime maps and traffic. It will get you to the neighborhood of the cache, then you just whip out your handheld GPS to make the find. Using a auto GPS, maybe with the exception of the 600 series, to actually pinpoint a cache can be frustrating. A car GPS and a handheld gps are purpose built differently with different characteristics. Hope this helps. Peoria Bill :>)
  21. If you are looking at the Etrex 20, here is some good reference material to aid you in making a decision: http://gpsinformation.info/penrod/etrex30/etrex30.html The eTrex 20 ($199) adds the mapping option, while the eTrex 30 is the top of the line in this series ($299), sporting an electronic compass, barometric altimeter and the ability to wirelessly share waypoints and tracks with compatible Garmin units. The new eTrex series includes all of the recent improvments to Garmin units, such as the Oregon, Dakota and 62/78 series. (Paperless geocaching, multiple mapsets, Garmin's BirdsEye imagery, Garmin Custom Maps) A new feature in the eTrex is the ability to receive GLONASS satellite signals (the Russian version of GPS), which gives users more satellites to acquire data from. This can improve satellite reception, especially in canyons and under heavy tree cover. Hope this helps. Regards, Peoria Bill:>)
  22. Hello, I think that trying to navigate roads with a handheld GPS works, but it is sometimes is a lot of work! It can't help with questions like, which lane should I be in or when I exit the upcoming ramp and it splits, should I keep left or right. You can get a modest priced Nuvi e.g. Nuvi 50LM for around $100.00. It will be easier to find specific destinations, give you un-distracted driving and you parents will have a harmonious trip. 23. Never seen a ghost, but in a couple cemeteries, I felt a heaviness and/or queasy feeling. Doesn't happen in all cemeteries, just two or three in 10 years of caching. When I get that feeling, I just skip that cemetery.
  24. As someone else has said, take time to notice the terrain. You might see a cylinder cone volcano, black rock outcroppings, wild horses, rocks arranged to spell out a message, oldest cache in Nevada, cairns, rock dwelling, etc. I don't remember the endless stream of .1mi geocaches, but I do remember the extra things I took time to notice. Take pictures. Peoria Bill :>)
  25. In my opinion caches at rest stops should take only a few minutes. Otherwise, they annoy the other folks travelling with you or you just don't have the time to work a multi or puzzle. I would most likely skip a puzzle. I might take the time to do an offset cache, but this is about as hard and long as I want to work at a rest stop. Peoria Bill
