  1. I ended up returning the unit to the store for a full refund. I like Garmin and this is probably just a Friday PM or Monday AM built GPS. I am considering the 64s as a replacement.
  2. Hello, I am still in Nevada, but will be home soon. I'll try some of the suggestions. Otherwise, I still have the receipt and will return the unit. Thanks for all the suggestions. Peoria Bill :>)
  3. I was excited and purchased one of the $199.00 62s GPS deals that are currently popular. I take my new GPS out to the ET Power Trail in Nevada and on day 2 in the middle of nowhere it turns itself off. I try to restart the unit and it does it again. Fortunately, I had an older backup unit and after a couple minutes with the laptop, I got it up and going. I got back to the Little Aleinn in Rachel and using their internet discover that folks have been having this problem and Garmin is replacing the unit. I wish I had this info before I purchased this unit. Yes, I have tried a reset and it only works for a very short time before the problem reappears. My $199.00 GPS deal does not look so good right now!
  4. Purchased one of these and now it starts to turn on then fades out. I haven't heard anything from Garmin about this situation. Either the store I purchased it at is going to take it back or Garmin needs to step up and make things right. Caveat Emptor- You have been warned.
  5. Remember the poem by Robert Frost: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. That sentiment only applies in poetry. As far as GPS units take the well travelled road. The GPS unit you cited is totally unknown to me and I have been doing this since 2003. Buy a new or used GPS, get the right software ie Easygps or GSAK. If you will do those things, your conclusion to not venture into the the stand alone GPS world might get altered. With your Computer Science background this GPS stuff should be a piece of cake.
  6. Thanks Fishgeek for the solution to this problem. I also have an older XP and was having to use that instead of my Win7 laptop. Now if I can just solve the three times and your out problem with Mapsend. After three installs, you have to reinstall the software.
  7. WAAS is helpful in getting a better signal. While considering the topics in this discussion I happened to discover the dark side of WAAS: http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/magellan/explorist/exploristxl/usage.html WAAS killed the Magellan XL. I ran across someone trying to sell one on Ebay and he was clueless as to why he could not get a signal. As our GPS's age and technology progresses there may be future victims of WAAS.
  8. Peoria Bill has been caching 10.5 years. Purchased an Etrex (blue) GPS first, then found geocaching while trying to figure out what to do with it. Game has changed a lot...some good and some not so good. Not as fanatical as I was in the beginning chasing FTF's, etc. but I'm still caching.
  9. I like the 62stc because I favor buttons over touch screens. I also like the "t" maps because where ever I travel, I will have a topo map. I also have the option of adding freemaps from gpsfiledepot.com and some of the other free maps. Yes, the 62stc costs a little more, but you are buying a rugged GPS that will last for years. Sooner or later Garmin, Magellan or Delorme will come out with some new feature and model that is appealing because that is how they stay in business. A new feature laden model won't perform it basic function ie navigating any better than the model it replaces. I can find caches with an old Garmin 310, Magellan Spor Trak, Delorme PN40, etc. just like I can with any new model. Since you are going to own the GPS for awhile, buy the best you can afford. Stay abreast of the changes and only plunk your money down for a new GPS when something materially changes that you just have to have. The cost of the "t" series will be long forgotten, but having to keep checking for maps and making sure you have the right map for some place you will visit will be with you forever. You have my advice. Good luck with whatever you decide.
  10. Please refer to http://www.windowsanswers.net/articles/fix-code10?tid=code10devicecannotstart&gclid=CMPimdr5zbgCFRSVMgodZl4A-g A code 10 error is a device driver error.
  11. The reason I asked for your criteria is that you picked two GPS units that are far apart in function and usage. If you need the radio, then your choice is the 655T. The unit comes with an optional 4AA battery attachment. You also mentioned the need for a primary GPS with multiple uses. The most popular GPS with a strong reputation for reliability and accuracy was the 60CSx. The successor to that legendary GPS is the 62 series. It does everything you said you needed. No offense to the Delorme PN60 or the Magellan 710 which are both very fine units. The Oregon 600 series is new and like any new GPS has the potential to become an outstanding piece of hardware. Time will tell. Your right now choice is the 62 series. Good luck in whatever you decide to buy--you have my recommendation.
  12. I cached NYC and my advice is to retain your situational awareness. I found a lot itinerant/homeless folks in Central Park and they see you even if you don't see them. Also, since there are no public facilities for them, they also seem to find likely cache spots to relieve themselves. After a couple times I moved on to other city caches and had a great time.
  13. You have picked a couple of great GPS units. What criteria did you use to arrive at these two units? They are both at the top of their respective lines. If you need the radio, weather info then the Rino 655t is a good bet. If you do not need a radio, then there are some additional GPS units that compete very well with the Magellan 710. The Garmin GPSMAP 62s/st/stc and the new Garmin 600 series are great units in the price range you have established. Also, Delorme has the PN60 and PN60w which are also very good units. Providing us with your criteria will help others give you advice that matches what you are looking for. Peoria Bill :<)
  14. The latest version of GC software is ver 2.15. If you have Vantage Point, free from Magellan, hooking up your GPS will cause the program to try and install the latest software version. As far as the black screen, please insure that both batteries are good. A dead cell in one could also cause this problem. Finally, the GC is a current model for Magellan. They still offer support from their website and you can possibly chat with them or get some online help. If your gps is really dead, then they often trade you out of your current model or offer an exchange. Hope this helps.
Peoria Bill
  16. Hello, I agree with the info provided by the other contributors. Sounds like you really want more confidence that you've actually loaded new caches before you leave home. I use GSAK and I know that I've uploaded new caches. If you are not familiar with GSAK, there is a free program called Easy GPS. With Easy GPS, you will need to find your query, then simply select the type of GPS you are using. You will know before you leave if you've been successful. Again, its free, and a great place to gain some control over your pocket queries. Hope this helps.
  17. Check parameters in query. Make sure you did not accidentally check something like "caches I haven't found" and "caches I own". Usually a zero means your parameters are conflicting in your query. Hope this helps.
  18. I think something got lost in the translation. If you are asking about the Etrex30, then it is a very good GPS and there is plenty of info available from Garmin as well this site. If you asking about this forum, then it is generally an exchange of topics relating to the technical difficulties someone is having, exchanging good ideas, announcing new versions of firmware, and so forth. Maybe you could clarify the question or comment little better and you will have many people that will help. Peoria Bill :>)
  19. I took a look at the link you provided and Canadian Tire does a nice job of introducing geocaching and gps selection. They sound like a good resource for your questions. That being said, I would ask you to take a look at the eTrex 20 or eTrex 30. The Magellan Explorist 310 does not have an SD card slot, and loads 1,000 caches. The eTrex 20/30 are at a similar price point and load 2,000 caches, have an SD slot. In addition the eTrex is capable of receiving both regular GPS and Glonass satellites. Also, if there is a local club, join and get some local cachers to cache with you and maybe show you a few features to set on your gps. Good luck whatever you decide. Peoria Bill
  20. Requires routable maps. You must purchase City Navigator map from Garmin for your area. Some free maps are available. Peoria Bill []
  21. There are several ways to get your query on the Etrex 30. You can use Basecamp, GSAK or try the simple method I describe below: Transferring Files to Your GPS Before you can transfer files, you must connect the device to your computer (Pg44 Manual) 1. Browse your computer for the file 2. Select the query (.gpx) file 3. Select Edit > Copy 4. Open the “Garmin” or memory card drive/volume 5. Select Edit > Paste Note: You must place geocache files in the Garmin\GPX folder Hope this helps. Peoria Bill []
  22. Hey, nice going! I like Garmin products as I own several. I'd like to add the Oregon 650 to my arsenal. Let me know how you like it. Offer --Acceptance--Money Exchanged....I think their Legal Dept. explained that they had created a contract!
  23. Hope you enjoy your trip to so many great places. I applaude your enthusiasm in gathering together so many geocaching resources. I don't want to work that hard. The difference in the 600 and the 600t is what $80.00. The next time you go somewhere, you will have to repeat the whole process you described. Also, make use of cache along a route. You can travel 500mi or 1,000 caches. A few of these will link the whole trip together. If there is an area you really want to pursue, then drop a query on it and get the 1,000 caches. If you don't have wireless access no problem. Squirell away you queries using GSAK. Your cache along a route will meet most of your travelling needs. Just recenter your file and send another 4,000(?) to your GPS. Also, pick out some outstanding caches to visit. I get tired doing repetitive caches and always want to look for something unique or different to find. Good luck on your trip. Have a great time.
