ArtMan Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I've been studying the run of 58 survey markers set in 1929 to mark the Virginia–Maryland boundary along the Potomac shoreline. Most are listed in the NGS database (though the majority are now lost, mainly because of erosion). I have just noticed that the designation of some of these stations has changed between the Geocaching.com snapshot of 2002 (?) and the current sheets available from the NGS. See for example HV4907. On the old (Geocaching) datasheet, the designation is BOUNDARY MONUMENT 55 1929. However, the current designation has been simplified to BOUNDARY MONUMENT 55. Likewise with monuments 56 (HV4908) and 57 (HV4909) and possibly others. The other monuments in this series are not consistently named. Some include the year of monumentation, 1929; others don't. There does not appear to be any pattern. The inconsistency in the original naming doesn't bother me much, but I am baffled as to why station designations would have been changed in the past few years. Sign me curious, -Art- Quote
evenfall Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Hey Art, Perhaps a Quick email to NGS will bring an answer which will explain as to why they truncated the listing. In the big picture it probably isn't much of an issue but it would satisfy the question with an answer. Rob Quote
