+southdeltan
I saw somebody mention this months ago and I've been curious. Here's the stats from the front page: There are 168815 active caches in 215 countries. In the last 7 days, there have been 115529 new logs written by 20773 account holders. Updated 5/24/2005 6:26:48 PM (Pacific) It'd be interesting to check these everyday for the next week or so. I wonder if there will be a noticable difference. Anybody else find this interesting? sd Quote Link to comment

You're just taking a lot of people who probably would have been out caching elsewhere and moving them to Fla. Granted some may be bagging more caches than usual, but others may be spending most of their time meeting people and not finding as many as they normally would. Also, being that this website is averaging 16,000+ logs in a day, will a couple hundred people make that much of a difference? +AtlantaGal
Probably not. I'll have my laptop and plan on logging my finds each night so I don't have to try to do them all when I get home. I'd imagine many folks will have a similar setup. Quote Link to comment

+The Leprechauns
According to the cache page for GeoWoodstock II, there were roughly 10,000 finds logged in the area that weekend. Yes, everyone would likely be caching at home anyways, but it is easier to grab more finds in virgin territory. I found 280 caches in four days, as opposed to my normal weekend total of 5 to 10. I'd call 10,000 logs a "spike." It will be interesting to see whether that total is exceeded in Jacksonville. Keeping track of it will presumably require some people there putting every cache in the area on their watchlists, as was done last year in Nashville. Quote Link to comment

+fly46
I agree that there will be a massive spike in logs. Even when I go out on cache runs for the heck of it, I only get 30 or so caches usually. And that includes runs associated with cache events. For two days at GW2, I found 150+ caches in 36 hours. So put 250+ people together in one area, get each of them 100+ cache finds over the weekend, and yeah, there'll be a massive spike in finds. Quote Link to comment

A beautiful, sunny day in one region would probably account for a much larger spike than the gang at GWIII. I would say yes, there will be. With the number of logs as high as it is site wide at this point it should spike, but not much statistically speaking. Also, many people I met and spoke with are making GW3 part of a caching vacation, not just a quick weekend visit. Yes, most of these people would still be caching back home, but you have a concentration of 500+ dedicated cachers in a very cache dense city. Many of these traveled together, so they will be caching together. There are/were organized cache runs Sunday, that will provide some cachers the opportunity to find many more than they would on their own. Therefore, much of the logging activity will be spread out over time. I doubt I will get many of my logs posted before Friday. I'll use my crew, Team CHB as my example. Yes, we are all dedicated, hard core cachers. Yes, we probably would have been out caching at home this past weekend. But no, we wouldn't have been out from 6 am until past midnight in a rented van, for four straight days back at home. We also wouldn't have had two laptops running at the same time, one with Streets and Trips using a rooftop antenna managed by a dedicated navigator, the second running GSAK with a dedicated operator. We also added two premium members to the six charter members for this trip, (but one charter member Paintfiction is part of the NEFGA group hosting the event so he won't log any new finds, but geologygirl rode with us for two days so that might even out the numbers). So eight cachers who might normally post 20-40 logs for an active weekend, will be posting 350-400 logs for this weekend. Since I had to fly out Sunday morning, if bringing the average down just a bit. So our little crew will be showing a 1200% increase in logging activity for the weekend. Quote Link to comment

For the past few days, it's been hovering around 117,700 logs (that's the average taken from the 10 updates from 5/24 to 5/29 (It's not 100% accurate, I'm sure I missed at least one update and probably more). The latest update is 8,000 logs more than this morning and 11,000 more than the average for the past few days. I bet it'll jump some more tomorrow - as today was a holiday in the US. It may be Wednesday or Thursday before some people finish logging finds as well. sd Quote Link to comment

Jeremy
Do keep in mind that during 3 day weekends we always see a spike in activity. GW3 may contribute to the overall spike but is not necessarily the cause of it. Quote Link to comment

That's an increase of approximately 30% in about a week. I wonder if they'll go down next week? sd Quote Link to comment
+wimseyguy
And I haven't even started logging my few finds from the event yet. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, maybe I can get started then. Edit-and I better do it soon. I just noticed that my post count is getting dangerously close to my find count again. Edited June 4, 2005 by wimseyguy Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
Well, the numbers don't seem to be going down yet. That's an increase of approximately 30% in about a week. Since several of the "power cachers" that travelled long distances are just now getting home and the web site is handing off database timeout errors and blank pages to those that try to log too quickly, I suspect it's kind of self-regulating at this point. There was definitely some serious hammering in FL and surrounding states. Quote Link to comment
+StressMaster
I've been averaging about 600 cache owner emails a day for the last week... all GW3 cache logs. Just started to slow down yesterday and today less than 300 both days.. Quote Link to comment
The Junkyard Dogs
now, thats alot of e-mail Quote Link to comment
+IceCreamMan
I've got a lot of hides in the area of GW3 and I have many Jax caches on my watchlist and bookmarks. I didn't add specifically for the event but I did remove a few. So far I've gotten 12,564 email logs! Quote Link to comment
FiddlinFool
Wow, I'm just glad to find out that GW3 doesn't refer to yet another Bush in the white house. Quote Link to comment
