Geocaching On A Mountain Bike

I am looking for recommendations on geocaches that are particularly good for mountain biking.

 

(I ride a Specialized FSR Enduro, and can take a beating, but I draw the line at drops greater than about 50 cm.)

 

I have cleared out all the caches within a 30km radius of my home base in Barrie, and would like to plan a couple outings in central Ontario where I can pack my ride along.

Check out GCGK93. My bike is the DeVinci full-susp and I can hit pretty much all of this cache without dismounting. I've also cycled this area with Squeakieboots Jr Geocacher riding in the back seat on my wife's non-susp bike. It was quite commical to actually ride uphill past a couple of trail-torpedoes as they were pushing their bikes up the incline. Of course, I'm sure they'd been riding all day. Anyway, its a great area for cycling and there is some nice smooth single track too.

Thanks, I have bookmarked that one. I think I recall some others in that same area that may have mentioned they were suitable for mountain biking.

 

I will plan a trip around it this season.

Here is an area that's more Southern Ontario, but worth the drive. [My ride is a 2002 Eduro Pro]. Any of the cache's in or around the Durham Forest, Walker Woods or Glen Major Forest are ideal for what your looking for. Lots of single track/ double track and old forest roads.

Another one of mine that comes to mind is in the Albion Hills Conservation Area. See GCG41H. There's plenty of trails here and mountainbiking is definitely encouraged.

 

The Durham Forest has plenty of trails to be sure - and there are lots of caches there too. Squeakieboots and I did 2 in the winter (although not on the bikes :-) There are a lot of trails that are very sandy so be forewarned. By my guesstimation it requires twice the effort to cycle sand as it does hard packed dirt.

Can I trouble you for a waypoint code in each of these areas? I tried to download the map, but the PDF file crashes Firefox every time. I can't find these places on Mapsource (but I have heard of the Durham Forest before).

 

If you could give me a single cache code for each, I will use GSAK to get a map of the area.

I think with the exception of GCM633 all of my cache hides are mountain bikeable. Most of them were either stashed by riding in to them, or on foot in the winter after I'd found the location on my bike. I actually did ride my bike to GCM633 the first time, but that was definitely not a good idea.

We are mountainbikers. We are planning on placing a cache in Awenda Park very soon. Actually, we may place the cache just outside of Awenda thereby respecting Parks Ontario. THere is good biking here. Technical single track with switchback climbs, and lots of 4X4 trails. As a reward, there are beaches on Georgian Bay on the north end of the park.

In Midland, there are MTB races at Mountainview ski hill on Thursday Nights.

One cache that we did which is a little farther north, but worth the trip is near Washago up Hwy 11 past Orillia.

We 4wheeled it into the cache, but it could very easily be a bikeable journey once things dry up some. Very beautiful terrain and location.

I'll bookmark that one, for sure. We used to canoe up that part of the Black River from just North of Sadowa. Might be a little far to canoe to the cache from there, though!

 

The woods around that section of the river are the one and only place I have seen a wildcat.

 

Sounds like a great area for some off-road bicycle adventure.

Awenda is one of the best parks, and it's close to home. I have ridden the trails there in the past, but there wasn't much singletrack (and especially not technical singletrack).

 

A cache in the area would be great.
