Cook County Forest Preserve Response

Requested permission to place a cache in Cook County IL Forest Preserve

Response I received:

Geocaching is discouraged at the District. In the past, geocaching

activities on our lands have included digging up land or otherwise

disturbing it. In these cases, geocaching is not allowed, as the District

asks its visitors to leave the lands undisturbed. In the rare case that the

object to be found are above ground, if it is not removed or taken

immediately by the person who left it there, it is considered littering.

The bottom line is the District neither permits or has an application

process for such activities. Thanks.

It looks like geocaching is under attack everywhere. Let me suggest that you make an FOIA inquiry as to exactly how many documented incidents of "digging" up ground have been reported. I would wager this is nothing more than a fabrication. I suggest that someone call their bluff...

I have to agree with Cashew Nut ... just leave it alone. Why this was brought up in the first place I'll never know. CCFP have their own issues and I really don't think they will manage to keep it out of "their land" heck, they can't keep their employees from sleeping all day. It's funny that they worry about litter when the out houses, picnic tables and pavillions are in terrible condition not to mention all the crap I see everywhere when I walk in one of their preserves. NO... don't allow maintained geocaches but it's o.k. to have trash cans that sit with garbage overflowing for weeks at time whilte the trash blows into the forest.

The gentleman is obviously mis-informed about what we do but I don't think the course of action is to point that out to him.

Whatever is what I say... I like geocaching quite a bit but if it is not allowed here in the Chicago area I can enjoy it just north of the border or down state on the weekends. It's no the end of the world.

Funny how those that were so against an organization not too long ago are now wishing they had one to represent us.

End of rant... thanks for listening! :(
