+culp686 Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 i was wondering if anyone could tell me where i could find some info on this? it is on the side of hwy. 30 in rainier OR. the first thing i noticed was a white sign with the letters USBM. and about a foot away was a wooden post. just about everything was worn off of it, but if you look close you will see an imprinted 83 m on it. as soon as i can figure out how to upload pics here i will do so. maybe that will help a little. thanks, culp686.
evenfall Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Hi Culp. It is unlikely that it is a Station we use here at Geocaching, but would be handy to have Latitude and Longitude for the location though, We do have ways of looking some survey marks up. No Guarantees. Rob
+culp686 Posted May 21, 2005 Author Posted May 21, 2005 ok, so i changed my avatar to show the pic. as for the coords. the are N46 05.682 and W123 06.098. hopefully this helps a little.

+Black Dog Trackers Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 culp686 - A great many (most?) of the USGS survey marks are not in the NGS/Geocaching database. The USBM sign and the wood post near it are probably both witness marks to a USGS disk (or perhaps another agency's disk). I suggest using a stiff wire probe or even metal detector around and between those witness 'posts' and you might find the disk. You won't be able to log it though, since it isn't on the database according to PFF's research.
+culp686 Posted May 23, 2005 Author Posted May 23, 2005 ok to let you guys know. i found another one. i have pics of it on the BM list. the number if anyone wants to see is SC0466. so this one is listed. i would also like to know if it is ok to "uncover" the other one if it is burried. thanks for the help everyone.
Bill93 Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 We often find benchmarks that are a little buried by time and soil movement/deposition. Probing wires/rods and metal detectors help a lot there. The rules as I see them are: -Don't do anything that might disturb the position of a benchmark, including soil movement that might shift it by a fraction of an inch in resettling. -Don't damage a sensitive environment such as a preserve or somebody's well-groomed yard -Don't take risks with buried utilities. It costs a LOT to repair them and some are dangerous to you.
