I'll just bet that Jess would look terrific in stylish western-wear. Thang is that she also has t' handle the sweet west-Texas lilt at the end of th' phrase "Ahm fine, how're yew."

 

That's th' one and only phrase that'll show a gal's west-Texas origin. From th' lips of a west-Texas beauty that phrase will pluck th' heartstrings of an ol' cowboy ev'ry time. It's sweeter'n a butter-milk biscuit soaked in Blue Bonnet honey. Dayum!

 

Th' whole conversation goes like this -

Harmon, you might try to plan your lessons so they appear on the posts that are multiples of 50 + 1 so that they'll be easy to find. Like maybe in about 45 more posts?

Several months ago I cut and pasted lessons 1-6 into Word for my daughter so she could learn Photoshop. She loved the lessons! I also sent those Word docs/photos to Harmon. I figured if Harmon felt like it he could post them on his website. I just sent them to Rocket Man because he was having the same problem. I still use those lessons to refresh my memory!

What I am calling lesson 7 is the cast shadow lesson. It comes after the dolphin lasso lesson.

Dave I haven't looked at that lesson for a long time....like since July.... I said that because I thought lesson six was numbered, but I guess it wasn't so that is lesson 6 and there is no part two.

 

I think there are also some other small tips and blubs mixed in throughout the Banter thread too...but I'm not looking for them right now!

Yes, that's a truly useful and surprisingly interesting shadow technique. Sure beats the heck out of that crude drop-shadow effect. Glad that you mastered it so well.

 

You did good by keeping the shadows light enough for realism and your work with the Gradient Tool is excellent.

 

You've had quite a holiday workshop.

 

Maybe I should work up a lesson about cast reflections to complement cast shadows. Cast reflections are challenging when the bottom of a subject area isn't exactly parallel to the bottom of the image frame as are the boots of the Three Amigos. Extra work is required to handle such situations and such situations are the norm.

Ok Harmon, I have to ask you - Where did you learn all this stuff?

Well, I worked about five years in the broadcast field heading up a few product development departments. The Alpine, CA company was named Channelmatic, Inc. and then that company was bought by a group named Local Insertion Media Technology (LIMT) from Sundsvall, Sweden. For some odd reason I never understood the combined name Channelmatic/LIMT wasn't funny to Swedes.

 

Channelmatic invented the very first automated insertion system to schedule and insert television and cable advertising spots on the hour and half hour. Products were sold worldwide. We designed a lot of interesting digital compression and switching stuff including the digital broadcast and video distribution systems still used by the five broadcast companies in Israel. We used Sun Microsystem boxes for the Israeli installations, lots of them.

 

Of course the digital broadcast field involves sophisticated processing of still and video image information. I took a personal liking to and adopted photo and video editing as a recreation. Way back then the editing tools were much simpler so we had to write our own code for JPEG/MPEG compression. Fortunately I had a background in signal processing and encoding.

 

My interests stuck and now I can't help myself. Maybe one day I'll figure out a way for you to see one or two of my video productions.

I have an extensive Photoshop CS2 library so let me know when you want to add to your collection. The best of my library is the book I've recommended.

 

By the way, I understand you can't say "Christmas" any more. Go figure.
