Geocaching Soundtrack

Recommended Posts

Right now XM Cafe, channel 45 on XM, is in the midst of a set it has entitled "Global Positioning Songs". I'm jotting down the song titles as they appear - the first being Disappear Fear's "For Hollywood". Don't know how relative they will be to geocaching, but it should still be interesting. I'm betting it's going to be songs about places.

Lately, it's been a lot of Todd Snider...particularly the song "The Ballad of the Kingsmen".

If you haven't heard it, you should. It cracks me up every time.

Also, I've added Blue Mountain's "Generic America" to heavy rotation on my MP3 player (sorry, no iPod for me).

Great Thread!

I normally listen to softer Indie music (Elliot Smith; Iron and Wine; Shins), but pre-caching music I tend to listen to are some heavy rock to get me in the mood and get me pumped up; something I can picture caching to.

It's actually funny, as I don't really like a this genre, but it really gets me ready to bust out of the car doors to run into the woods.

One of my caching CD's:

1: ACDC - For Those About To Rock

2: Guano Apes - Open Your Eyes

3: Hendrix - Voodoo Chile

4: Bush - Machine Head

5: Nonpoint - Headstrong

6: System of a Down - Chop Suey

7: Disturbed - Down with the Sickness

8: Sabbath - Paranoid

9: Skynard - Simple Man

10: Godsmack - I Stand Alone

11: Audioslave - Like A Stone

12: ACDC - Hells Bells

The Gourds (Austin Band)

"Gin and Juice"

The Gourds

Great stuff! :)

Thanks for recommending "The Gourds" -- I'm playing a free download from "Blood of the Ram" now.

Austin's a great town for music -- If you haven't already, check out "The Asylum Street Spankers" -- We've played their CDs in the cache car, on some outings.

Now I've got to go check out that Canadian alt blue grass band someone mentioned...

I do not usually listen to anything but the drone of the engine.

A fact few people know about me: I am a serious, though amateur, classical musician. I am also unusual these days because I am both a string player and a wind player. I am also on occasion a singer. On a long car trip, I am usually doing vocal exercises or practicing something I'm working on. No, not instrumental. That's dangerous!

On a particularly long drive, I actually utilized the CD player. Since I had just read through all six of Bach's Brandenburg concertos with a chamber group a few days previous, I decided I would listen to all six on CD. I figured that would keep me awake. It worked, but in the middle of the slow movement in No. 6 (about halfway through, since I played them 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3) a deer jumped out into the road. This was about 1:30 a.m. Somehow, I used the force and swerved around it, missing it by mere inches. Boy was I wide awake after that.

Just so you guys don't think I'm a total blueblood, I did try to make a living at one point playing in a country band for about three years. It didn't work out, but we mostly had a lot of fun.

Pity you weren't up to No.2 All that horn playing might've scared the deer away from the road!

Some recent additions to my cache mobile's soundtrack are Bowling for Soup, The Thrills, New Pornographers, the new Beck CD, Save Ferris, the new Weezer CD, Yellowcard, The Killers, Superchick, The Honorary Title, Pedro the Lion and I'm on a Red Hot Chili Peppers kick and also I picked up a very old Undertones CD that was a fave many years ago when I had it in vinyl.

What do you listen to on the drive to your next cache?

Da-a-a-a-d, she's staring at me.

D-a-a-a-a-d, he won't share.

Are we there yet?

:o

Only when I take all three agents. I prefer the song of silence.... but... as I have a very opinionated daughter who I occasionaly oblige to protect my sanity; we usually end up listening to Casting Crowns, Nicole Nordeman, Point of Grace, or "We're Here to Worship".

"I'm not Coming In", by Stuart Hill

This is what I usually consider to be my "summer theme." I used to know where you could download the song, but the site doesn't seem to have it anymore, so here's the lyrics...

Sun's up, I hit the floor

Shoes tied, I'm out the door

Is this a clean shirt?

I think it was one yesterday

Free day, I'm on the phone

No plans, I got the cell on

I call my boys up

Spend a little time outside today

Never liked for you to hear where I gotta be

Never liked being told who I gotta see

I like no commitment growing up around me

I'm not coming in anymore

Everything I want and need is just outside this door

I'm not coming in anymore

I've got too many friends on the outside

That don't include you

Go ahead and think all you might

All my friends and I ain't on the inside

All kinds of facts and probabilities

You say we're meant for all the seasons

You scream with endless possiblities

Spend a lot of time trying to convince me

My friends are two strikes against me

Well I swing for the fences

So that must make strike three

That's fine by me

I'm not coming in anymore

Everything I want and need is just outside this door

I'm not coming in anymore

I've got too many friends on the outside

That don't include you

Nothing ever seems right

Like it does when I start

Playing it in right speed, kick in at the right spot

I like things familiar

And I don't belong here

Don't belong here

I'm not coming in anymore

Everything I want and need is just outside this door

I'm not coming in anymore

I've got too many friends on the outside

The plan's on the outside

It don't include you

Not coming in

Not coming in

Not getting back no more

No more

I think it applies well to the cacher.

:yikes:

We have a son that always seem to trust the disappointing forces in his life.

Add this to the above list:

I'll never find the next one and even if I did Sarah(his sister) has found it before me.

Besides from that we never listen to anything but ourselves when we go for any kind of car ride.

If I should be alone in the car one favorite is Tom Waits, Underground in which he clearly states he's into geocaching.

"there's a big dark town

it's a place I've found

there's a world going on

UNDERGROUND"

The Boys of Summer, Don Henley (1985)

This is the sound of my brain

Then I said -This is the sound of my brain on Don Henley

Then I said -One two three four

He's a tortured artist

Used to be in the Eagles

Now he whines like a wounded beagle

Poet of despair

Puffed up with hot air

He's serious, pretentious and I just don't care

Don henley must die

Don't let him get back together

With Glenn Frey, Don Henley must die

Cut on the TV

And what did I see

This bloated hairy thing winnin' a grammy

Huah

Best rock vocalist

Compared to what

Bunch of pseudo-serious Kraft angst-a-matic

Satanic plot

Don Henley Must die

Put a sharp stick in his eye, don henley must die

Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya

Oh

Quit playin' that crap

Youíre out of the band

I'm only kidding, can't you tell?

I love his sensitve music

Idiot poetry swell

You and your kind

Are killin' rock and roll

It's not because youíre o-l-d

--Cause you ain't

Got no soul

Don't be afraid of fun

Loosen up your ponytail

Be wild, young

Free and-a

Get your head

Outta your tail

Don Henley

Must die

Donít let him get back together

With Glenn Frey

Don Henley

Must die

Put him in the electric chair

Watch him fry, Don Henley must die

Don Henley must die

Ah ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya

No Eagles reunion

The same goes for you too Sting - Mojo Nixon

I hear the following....

It's over there, turn here, go right, go left, jump the curb, park here.....

If it's not that then I just listen to the radio.

Sounds a lot like Red Mage when he's doing the navigating. Though with him him it's more like...

RM - I think it that way!

Me - Which way?

RM - That way, just ahead!

Me - Sean, you'll have to be more specific!

RM - Turn here!

Me - Which way?!

RM - Right, turn right!

Me - Well you should have tole me that before we got to the intersection, not after we pass it!

RM - Oh, wait...which way is east?

Me - That's it, Sean! Give me the GPS!

Michelle shocked (just got her new set)

Tom Waits - Blue Valentine

Wind. Birds. Water flowing over rocks....

On the way to and from, though, it's been Will Smith, Green Day, Good Charlotte, and other assorted mixes.

I tried listening to my MP3 player while caching. It's too distracting. I like having the music, but miss out on all the natural sounds. But I have to contend with the earbud cable flopping about and make sure it doesn't get tangled in anything. The music could keep me from hearing approaching muggles or animals too. But on the way to the cache in the car, the MP3 player is pumping out Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, Kelly Clarkson, and The Corrs.
