While I'm in the car on the way to the trail, I listen to Sirius satellite radio: The Vault, Folk Town, Sirius Disorder, Raw Dog, one of the classical channels, or whatever strikes my mood at the time. Depending on who's in the car, it might also be Kid Stuff.

 

Upon locking the car door, it's the sound of the woods all the way! This weekend, even my chatty six-year-old said, "I can't believe it. When we're hiking I hardly say anything at all." The fact that we're absorbed in all of the sensations of the woods makes every cache sought a success, even if we end up logging a DNF.

I take the oppurtunity to listen to Books-on-CD when I am in the car. My In-Dash CD player is broken, so I have a DiscMan. When I get to a cache location, I put on the headphones and take the CD player with me. It's kind of funny, but if I think back to the books I've listened to, I can tell you what caches I was doing at the time.

 

In the past few months, I have completed all 5 Hitchhiker's Guide books, the first 11 books to "A Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket, the first 9 books to the Aubrery-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, "Ender's Game" and "Shadow of the Giant", both by Orson Scott Card.

 

I have a 50 minutes commute to work, so I get plenty of time to listen each morning and each evening. And if I stop to grab a cache, I get more time to listen.

I just picked up two great CDs that are going to be a part of my Geocaching soundtrack.

 

First, The Duhks, a group out of Winnepeg, Manitoba, caught my attention. Produced by Bela Fleck, they can best be described as alternative bluegrass with incredibly close vocal harmonies. These guys really rock, from the opening cut "Death Came A-Knockin'", to some very traditional fiddle tunes. The only letdown was a cover of Sting's "Love is the Seventh Wave." They are much better when they do their own (or at least own arrangements of traditional) stuff.

 

Putumayo is a label best known for compilations of world music. I've got several CDs of Afropop and Carribean music from them. This evening I found "Blues Lounge", which features some excellent remixes of traditional blues tunes. Generally, I don't care for remixes, but these complement the originals, adding a rhythmic vitality that keeps interest and a driving impetus to the music. Excellent for the drive to a cache.

Usually, after breakfast and driving to the first cache Car Talk is on, so we listen to Click and Clack. From there, it really depends...

 

If Sarah is along, we have to listen to Sirius Satellite's "Kidstuff." With that, we'll get anything from Shirley Temple to The Wiggles. I've noticed "the wheels on the bus" seems to be a recurring song.

 

When Sarah is not along, or if she starts hollering "pipes, daddy, PIPES!" we will listen to

Usually have Sirius Satellite tuned up to 1st Wave, Buzzsaw, Octane, The Roadhouse, or Hair Nation. Soon this summer we'll have Radio Margaritaville, and being a former Parrothead, I'm sure that will be tuned up quite a bit.

On the way to caches it's usually NPR, but Jack Johnson's or Donovan Frankenreiter's summer tunes seem to be fitting for the season. If you want specific tracks, JJ's "Mudfootball" or Donovan's "It Don't Matter." They have smooth summer sounds that no one can complain about. Another song is "Dream Life of Rand McNally," by Jason Mraz. If you look around the internet audio archives, you can find multiple versions of the song, as he rarely will play it the same way twice. Traveling the world, going on adventures... Seems fitting.

Jane's Addiction had a song called, "Three Days". Thats how long it took me to find a film cannister micro hidden in a rock pile ...

 

As already mentioned, Ray Charles is the man. Also, old Iggy and the Stooges is fun stuff along with Frank Black and the Catholics/Pixies. I could also listen to Van Morrison anytime ... At 42, I've started to slow down in my music buying. I must be getting old cause now I love to listen to sports radio, oh yeah baby !!!!

 

PS- I forgot about Fishbone, these guys are great and get very little attention ...

There have been so many great suggestions on this thread that I've printed it out. I see a lot of stuff here in common with our own tunes - Nanci Griffith, The White Stripes, They Might Be Giants, Ben Folds, Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips (we, too, are particularly fond of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots"). All that plus NPR. So, I figure y'all have some good taste.

 

We're always looking for good music, which can be hard to find on local radio. KCRW (Los Angeles) is great, but we don't have satellite radio to listen in the car, so we find stuff we like (mostly on KCRW's morning show), and download off of iTunes (or other legal sources). Recent faves include:
