We actually had to go over the rock ledge he was under. There was a small dog with us, and she was our major concern. She had gone ahead a little ways when one of us heard the rattle. We could see the dog, and we could see there was nothing near her, so we had to convince her to stay put. No small task considering it was 107F and she was looking for any shade she could find (like under that rock ledge). All worked out well, and I finally got to see a desert rattler. Not entirely sure if it was a diamond back or a mojave rattler (I couldn't get a good look at the tail markings to tell; both are indigenous to the area), but both are a lot more dangerous then the timber rattlers we're used to.
