Anyone close to this route that can let me know of any 'drive by' or short walk caches that I can grab on the way down (or up)

If you use the A38 instead of the A42/M42, there is more caching potential and it's probably quicker too.

 

Then in Derby, there are three rather good caches within a mile of the A38.

As you continue down the A38 there is a cache at Branston Water Park (signposted from the road).

Thry this one on the m18 Doncaster North (m18 services)

It's a fairly new one round the back of the services on the way down to the M1 Junction 5 just go round the roundabout to get to.

A little off your path but worth it if you are a bug hunter is The Departure Lounge. A good car park, great views of where you have come from and where you are going to, and a short walk to a great cache box. You can watch the cars going along the A42 from here

Seconded. Nice location and a very short, non-muddy walk from the parking.

I'll third that idea. I did The Departure Lounge as a detour on my way back from the NE recently, and although it's a bit of a diversion from the motorway, it's a short walk to the cache and a lovely spot to visit.

 

I have done several caches off the M1/M18 whilst going up and down to the NE including GCM8YN Tube Test and GCJXT3 Risley Glebe both off Junction 25.
