Firth of Forth Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 I will be staying one night in Manchester in June to attend a conference the next day. I did a search for nearby caches. There is only one within a mile, which I cant do as it is part of the spectrum series and necessitates finding other caches first. Are there any caches that are easily accessible without a car from central Manchester? I will be staying near the river in between the stations. Quote
mongoose39uk Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Serenity and the Heaton one are easy enough to get to from the centre of Manchester. The Number 59 bus will drop you at the gates of heaton park, from there you can do both. Cheers Tony Quote
Stuey Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 I will be staying one night in Manchester in June to attend a conference the next day. I had the option of a free lift to Manchester for about 6 hours with some footie fan friends a few weeks ago. I declined, as there were almost no caches in the area of Old Trafford where I would have ended up! Good luck Sally! Quote
badger Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Are you staying in the City centre or a little further out? Matt Quote
ClanWhippy Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 you know manchester has a very good tram service that goes from the city centre out to bury, altringham or eccles. manchester to bury for example takes 30 minutes and they run every 12 mins in all directions. so any caches along those lines are reachable from the city centre ;-) Quote
Firth of Forth Posted April 19, 2005 Author Posted April 19, 2005 Thanks very much for the information everyone - it's always great to get such helpful and rapid responses for this sort of question on this forum. I will do some homework on the suggestions, and formulate a caching plan. There is already a suggestion to meet for a drink in the evening, if any local cachers are interested (June 16th). Quote
Pengy&Tigger Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 I sympathise with you there. I work in Salford Quays and there are never any caches that I can go out and bag at lunchtime. Email on the way regarding Spectrum Ultra Violet. Let us know if drinkies are organised. T Quote
lizzardman Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I am currently planning some caches in Manchester as it is a bit of a cache desert, but probably not before your visit - let me know if drinks are planned! Quote
Firth of Forth Posted April 21, 2005 Author Posted April 21, 2005 Drinks are definitely planned! I'll be there - just need to know which pub and what time. Watch this space for further details nearer the time. Quote
dougal124 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I agree with lizzardman, it is a bit of a desert for caches. There are a few, but you need to plan ahead! I am also in the process of planning some caches and multi caches as there are some great locations in and around manchester. Quote
powerbook_fanatic Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 Drinks are definitely planned! I'll be there - just need to know which pub and what time. Watch this space for further details nearer the time. Ah, now, you are on my specialist subject .... Also available to ferry around Manchester area during the day as I'm still on the Rock and Roll. +Firth of Forth Posted April 24, 2005 Author Posted April 24, 2005 Ah, now, you are on my specialist subject .... Also available to ferry around Manchester area during the day as I'm still on the Rock and Roll. Malcolm - The Powerbook Fanatic Great! I'll let you choose the pub then! Having never been to Manchester, I need the locals to decide upon a suitable venue. Thanks for the offer of transport too. I will be in touch nearer the time, as I'm not sure yet what time I will be arriving. Quote
Firth of Forth Posted May 7, 2005 Author Posted May 7, 2005 Update - train ticket booked - will be arriving at 2pm, so plenty of time for some caching before a pub meet in the evening. I'm looking forward to it! Quote
Firth of Forth Posted May 7, 2005 Author Posted May 7, 2005 Sorry - it was in an earlier post on this thread, but a bit obscure perhaps. The date is June 16th. Just waiting on a suggestion for the venue now. Quote
mongoose39uk Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 Sorry Sally, much as I would love to follow you on Ultra Violet, I found half the co ordinates yesterday so gave it a go and found it today. We have a few choices of venues for drinkies and will let you know when Malcolm has made his mind up. I would suggest the Beer house as it has a cracking collection of real ales Quote
Seasider Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 I did have a couple of caches in the city but archived them after one went missing and another got damaged. I'll see if I can re-instate them prior to your trip. Since we have two beer experts planning the venue then I'll also ink that date into my diary! Cheers! Seasider Quote

This 'business trip' is getting better and better! Quote
mongoose39uk Posted May 10, 2005 Posted May 10, 2005 Ok, the venue is being surveyed this evening. Now do people want this as an event or just an informal pie and a pint? Quote
Pengy&Tigger Posted May 10, 2005 Posted May 10, 2005 I guess it depends on how many the venue can cope with. If it can cope with larger numbers then list it. If not, then make it informal. T Quote
BedlingtonDuo Posted May 10, 2005 Posted May 10, 2005 I work in Salford so if the meet is still on I would be be interested! Mark Quote
lizzardman Posted May 12, 2005 Posted May 12, 2005 Ok, the venue is being surveyed this evening. Now do people want this as an event or just an informal pie and a pint? So, where's it gonna be Tony? Probably not ready for June, as a bit of research required, but my next series of caches - 'The Manchester Code' coming over the summer! Quote

mongoose39uk Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 The Venue, Powerbook has informed me that we have use of a room at the Beer House, Angel Steet, on the 16th of June for the evening Sorry but it is an upstairs room. Cheers Tony Quote
Firth of Forth Posted May 13, 2005 Author Posted May 13, 2005 Great! Thanks to you guys for organising this. Quote
lizzardman Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 But when are you going to put Liz Power 1 back. Cheers Tony Soon, soon! Technical troubles....! Quote
Firth of Forth Posted May 19, 2005 Author Posted May 19, 2005 So, just to confirm this and bump the topic up again: For any cachers in the area, please come and have a drink (in Scotland that can mean anything from 1 to 12 pints) at the Beer House, Angel Street, Manchester on Thursday June 16th. I'm not sure what time would suit people best. Should we say from 7pm onwards? Does the place serve food? Quote
rutson Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 (in Scotland that can mean anything from 1 to 12 pints) Dunno if I'll make it yet, but not sure if I could control myself to drink so little Quote
Naefearjustbeer Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 (in Scotland that can mean anything from 1 to 12 pints) Dunno if I'll make it yet, but not sure if I could control myself to drink so little Ah but she hasnt mentioned starting on the nips, That is just the beer intake Quote
mongoose39uk Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Venue has now been finalised and the Event listed Central Manchester Beer Quote
Firth of Forth Posted May 23, 2005 Author Posted May 23, 2005 (edited) That's brilliant! I didn't realise that this 'event' was going to be a real event!! Count me in (obviously)! Looking forward to it! So, that's the 3rd annual Scottish Cache Bash this weekend, Manchester a few weeks later, and the 2nd annual Irish Cache Bash the weekend following that. I think that my children might just start to say that I'm neglecting them! Edited May 23, 2005 by Firth of Forth Quote
Firth of Forth Posted June 9, 2005 Author Posted June 9, 2005 This thread had sunk down four pages, so bump. Only a week to go now. Malcolm powerbook fanatic has very kindly offered to ferry me about for an afternoon's caching before we attend the event. I can't think of many other situations in which I would arrange to meet a complete stranger and jump into their car! (However, if noone hears from me again, you will know where to look! ). Quote
rutson Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 You're in safe hands! Looks like I may be about for the event, looking forward to it. Quote
mongoose39uk Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Subject to approval there will be new caches in the area. Also the beer is very good and quite effective, hic Quote
powerbook_fanatic Posted June 11, 2005 Posted June 11, 2005 You're in safe hands! Looks like I may be about for the event, looking forward to it. Never been driving in the Crash Mobile then ... Numbers are pretty low on the food side so when I spoke to Paul on Thursday it is most likely that he'll be doing a chicken Waterzooi for us, unless there are any loud objections before I next see them on Tuesday. Malcolm Quote
lizzardman Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 Subject to approval there will be new caches in the area. Any news on the new caches, Tony. Just an excuse to bump up the forum really! Quote
mongoose39uk Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 Subject to approval there will be new caches in the area. Any news on the new caches, Tony. Just an excuse to bump up the forum really! Should be listing mine tonight with a note! Dont want it released till Thursday Quote
Firth of Forth Posted June 15, 2005 Author Posted June 15, 2005 Looking forward to it. See you all soon. I'll try to bring some sunny Scottish weather with me! Quote
Firth of Forth Posted June 17, 2005 Author Posted June 17, 2005 I must, once again, say a big thank you to Mongoose and Powerbook fanatic for giving me an escorted geocaching tour of the south side of Manchester. and waiting patiently while I hunted for those dastardly disguised caches (and gave me a clue or two). It was a great afternoon and evening (and I did bring the sunshine with me ) But the nettles are BIG in Manchester. Quote
