Am I The Worst Cacher Of All....

Recommended Posts

Today I visited five sites....and although I found the prospective location each time...I failed to find a single cache.....I went to McDonalds to assuage my intense disappointment.......

My confidence is severly dented...... ;);):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:)

I've had days like that. One week, 3 quick finds..."I must be getting the hang of this".... next week 5/5 DNFs. All the clues lined up, must have been in the right place.

Though I had lost my touch.

Last week, found 5 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday, no DNFs. (Not trying the previous DNFs I hasten to add, they still remain unfound).

The strange thing is, I had my cache details mixed up and found the last one using the cache sheet for another cache I thought I might move onto later if I had time. They were so similar, start in graveyard, follow footpath to bridlepath, under the fallen log.

Wasn't till I went to log out the TB I found that I realised something was wrong. Must be developing super powered cachers instinct.

...and to pick up some swaps for your next successful find? ;)

Just a thought, but there are times when I feel I'm in the minority when I report a DNF. I get the feeling the many people only report a DNF if they think the cache has gone walkies, where I will report both this and my own sheer stupidity.

Am I alone, just plain wrong or excessively paranoid? ;)

My worst caching day so far was at GCM8A9 Hang Up and Run To Me.

April 3 - GPS wouldn't settle down and had me jumping around all over the place. I got scratched to blazes by trees and brambles, threatened by a dog while crawling under a holly bush, and finally shot at by a teenager with a paint gun. Didn't even find stage 1. Cycled home despondently.

April 7 - Sun shining, all passers-by friendly (even the dogs), GPS spot-on. I walked straight up to stage 1, guessed first time what to do next, then found cache in under a minute's searching. Felt really good all that afternoon!

Hope your next trip is a "return to form" too.

My suggestion is to sacrifice a willing virgin king-like fool. But that's probably because I've been watching too much Wicker Man. Anyway, I hope your caching is more fruitful in future ;)

Because the description of the site tallied with the actual....I knew someone would ask that question...

By the way...I feel a little better....that I didn't notice that one of them was a micro......so in future I will pay more attention to the cache details.... B)B):oB):D:D:D

Yesterday we left home full of enthusiasm for our 5 chosen caches 25 miles from home - after driving round for nearly two hours trying to find a suitable parking place (small country roads that look like they go near and then turn off in completely the opposite direction!!) we eventually just pulled over about a mile from the cache and decided that at least the kids and dogs would have a good walk - unfortunately we had not anticipated scrambling up a very very steep hill full of brambles and stingers, we emerged triumphant at the top picking bits of bush and insects out of our hair (apart from Mr Roo who doesn't have any!!) only to be confronted with a fantastic view of a valley and another huge climb and still nearly a mile away from the cache site. Needless to say we decided to trudge back to the car and try for the last two on our list only one of which we managed to find :o Still we were out there and thats what counts B) well thats what we're telling ourselves!

I managed not to find Arche (Paris) despite there being two spolier photos, one of which has an arrow drawn on it pointing to the exact spot where the cache is! I was sure it must have gone, but several others have found it since. Doh! B)

During the last ten days or so I've had some really good days...

The day my Palm crashed on the way to an intricate multi 100 miles from home.

The day I had a log on my own multi saying it looked as if the final container had been incinerated.

The day my only attempt of the day was a DNF - the container had been taken.

The day I got back to the car with my great-nephew after the first cache of the day and his mobile rang. His parents' plans had changed and he needed to be home soonest.

The day I checked my multi and the container had indeed been incinerated.

Today was pretty good, though. I didn't go caching... :D;):D

Talking of DNFs. I once had to visit a micro cache 5 times.

It was in the City of London. Of course the GPS sig was bad. The location was easy. I knew it was still there as it had been found before my 5th attempt.

As I drove up to the spot yet again I spotted it whilst sitting in my vehicle. I will swear it was not there on the other 4 attempts.

Moral: Don't give up.

I had one cache where I visited twice with no luck at the final location (In my defence, it had snowed on one of the visits). I asked the setter for additional clues, and they provided them, along with a massive spoiler photo, and when I eventually found it, I realised that I must have actually stood on it on my previous visits. It was very well camoflaged!

I managed a DNF on holiday in Tenerife - actually I managed a couple of them - but on this one I stood on top of a big stone, and announced to the family, "No, I think this one's gone."

A week or so later when I was back home and filling in the DNF, I popped open the spoiler photo, only to find that the box was underneath the big stone!

Doh!

Can anyone beat this?  So far we have logged 52 DNF is this a record ?

I have logged 603 DNFs, but only ten so far this month (after 36 in March). As far as I know, the leader is a geocacher in Texas: Geo Dee.

I can only hope that this information can cheer you a little. There are others who fail and yet continue to keep trying.
