+Mad H@ter Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 Spotted an interesting (to me at least) article in New Scientist (19 March 05) on DOY mapping using GPS, which lead me to the OpenStreetMap website. There is also an article on this in yesterdays Guardian Quote
Remote Part Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 Interesting article in the Guardian, though a little inaccurate: Steve Coast, a London-based programmer, is making a free map of his own. It's easy, he says, just a matter of placing a GPS handset in your pocket and going for a stroll. The ideal time is between 7 and 9pm, when three satellites are overhead and GPS coverage is at its peak. "Even with a cheap £25 handset, the accuracy is about 10 metres," Coast explains, "roughly the same width as an average street." Peak GPS coverage between 7 and 9pm? And what GPS handset can you get for £25? Another similar open mapping project is Freemap. Quote
+lordelph Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 I got in touch with the Freemap chappie (Nick Whitelegg) to see how we could use his maps for http://www.geograph.co.uk. It's early days but he's done some nice work, and he's now joining forces with the Openstreetmap folks. If anyone is interested in getting more involved, see http://okfn.org/wiki/OpenGeoData - there is a meeting in London on April 14th to "bring together Open Source GIS software authors and mapmakers, with people working on spatial information systems for local government.". Both Openstreetmap and Freemap are giving short talks. I hope to pop along as the whole thing has piqued my interest! Quote
+derandere Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I read articels concerning where the data goes when it is "finished". and How open will it stay? I do think OSM is a nice project. What do you thing about it? Any Pros or Cons? DerAndere Quote
