You Found What Near The Cache?

I was after a new cache listing which had already been found a couple of times. The second finder indicated he found the cache but was unsure if it was the correct one. The log wasn't signed and there was no pencil. I was prepared to find out what was going on at the cache site. The coordinates were spot on and I found a found a 35mm film container with a 7 of diamonds and another set of coordinates. It also had the previous finders log (name) on it. This 35mm container didn't match the cache size of large what so ever. I scoured the area futher and found the real cache. I spent lots of time over the next few weeks trying to find out about this other cache. I sent my reviewer a note to see if any caches had been archived or were submitted for that particular area. He indicated there wasn't. The paper inside the 35mm container had a welcome to geocaching with this sites web addy, in other words I don't think it was listed on another web site. I couldn't find anything at the other listed coordinates which were just over the minimum distance guidelines. My original log from June 8th 2010 can be found here. I still don't have a clue why this other cache was there.

While on a daily walk around the lake at my office complex, I go by a nearby geocache once a week or so just to check on it, as the woods where it is placed is a popular "hidden hangout" spot.

 

It was muggled a few weeks ago and replaced shortly thereafter.

 

This particular time, though, I ended up finding a TB item that had been missing for almost 2 years! just a few yards from where GZ for that cache is. Whether it was supposed to be in the cache or not, I couldn't find any info, so I emailed the TB's owner and shipped it to them.

The weirdest thing I'd ever seen was an abandoned tent with everything necessary for camping nearby. Hadn't been used in at least a year but it looked like someone might have been living in it right then. Creepy!

While looking for a cache near an old ski resort, after making our way through the weeds and getting covered in ticks we found an old snowboard and a round white disk sled. The "things" you see on the white sled are spiders and ticks...we did NOT pick it up.

 

 

We left the snowboard and sled there...even though the resort is gone, the hill is still there and is probably a blast to play on in the winter.

On the way back down the hill (in town) we found two pair of downhill skis. While Durango is a ski town (Purgatory) that is miles from where we found the skis.

Super odd, but we turned them into the police station and if they don't get claimed we've got new-ish skis. Pity I don't ski.

I recently tried to log GC2P191. It was already dark and the cache is hidden between some trees and shrubbery at the side of the road. I couldn't find it that night without a flashlight, though the most promissing discovery was a big red box somewhere around the coords. Turns out, uppon further inspection, the box used to hold a flashlight... just not quite spelled in the same way. x_x

I thought that this would be a perfect cache-container, but on second thought - I didn't dare to even touch it.

Yesterday my girlfriend and I were looking for a geocache in the bush. We didn't find the cache but we did find a guys Social Insurance Number card, Visa card, and a Membership card to something.

 

I'm hoping he just lost his wallet, and some kids ditched the stuff in the woods, and that he wasn't mugged or murdered

 

I'm bringing it to the RCMP station near my house tomorrow.

On a trail, about 30 feet from one of my caches, (named Perseverance), my 8 year old son stepped on a Pygmy Rattlesnake. I was standing about 20 feet behind him and saw it.... Just told him, "Justin! Walk!!!!" He took a few steps forward without looking, which is what I wanted, and the snake slowly slithered away without striking him. Whew~~~ After that, my son would NOT go behind the tree to look for my cache....oh well!

The best and most memorable "sighting" was seeing a whale. I was hunting for Pacific End near Marina Del Rey, Ca. There were a lot of people mulling around looking at a certain spot in the water in the marina. I asked someone and they said a whale has been hanging out in the harbor for a week. As I was negotiating the jagged rocks of the jetty, I happened to look up just in time to see the whale surface and exhale thru its blowhole. Awesome.

I've seen a lot of the usually odd things like used condoms, abandoned toilets, dead animals, sun-bleached animal bones (some that even looked human), but the oddest thing I saw was in an old urban cemetary in Downey, Ca. Ten feet from the cache was a cow's tongue with about a dozen gold safety pins stuck in it. And, the tongue didn't look like it came from the butcher's shop, it looked like it had been ripped from the animal. I posted a pic on the cache page but the cache owner requested that I remove the photo.

Found an unopened pack of cigarettes - threw them away. All the smokers are screaming 'NOOOOO!' right now.

 

Usually I just find random garbage, bones, road kill...found a red tulip growing in the woods in the middle of no where. Tourists stare at you funny when they see you carrying a gun, hey it's the woods and we have mountain lions, not to mention two footed predators plus this is an open carry state.

Today, while out checking on a geocache for a friend, I found a bloody saw along the trail I was walking. Yes it was blood. Yes I called the police. Today has been interesting.

oddly on the way to find "lest we forget fluffy" we came across a dead and decaying deer. Just a little buck that had obviously met its end a few months back. Just found it mildly funny considering the name of the cashe we were after.

Today I found a marijuana bowl that somebody left in the woods. A little obnoxious to have that near the cache, and I wasnt sure whether to throw it out or leave it. With my luck I whould have been stopped by police and searched or something like that and caused an overall awkward moment. So I just kicked it further off the trail and continued on my way.

Oddly enough the most interesting thing that I have found at a cache . . . was another cache. I had found the cache the week before, and happened to come back with my caching partner so that she could find it as well. I sat down to take a break under the umbrella while she searched for it.

 

Presently she came back with it, and as she's opening it I notice that it looks absolutely nothing like the cache (different container, different log, different contents, etc.). I tell her that it isn't it, and of course she looks at me like I'm an idiot. I walk over to the *same* tree roots she pulled the cache from, and pulled out the other one.

 

It turns out that a cache marked as lost (and archived) two years ago was literally hidden exactly the same way under the exact same tree (in the roots, under some bark, one on the high side of the tree and one on the low). There are at least 100 trees with hollow roots to put caches in within 100-foot radius of this one. The owner must have never checked to see if it was there before archiving the original one. The "new" cache was put there by a new owner who liked the spot, but didn't know the old one was there. Some people signed the log in the other cache and some in the correct one, apparently this had been going on for a couple of years with no one realizing it was two different caches.

So far I have found a knife, lots of CITO stuff. I find enough bottles to return to keep my premium membership going. Waiting for those crazy things to happen though

My husband and I had a real CSI experience while geocaching the other day. It was in the woods, off the path and the description told us the cache was buried. We started digging, did not find the cache, BUT we found a disintegrated women's blouse, a shot gun shell and there was a big black plastic bag kind of buried. It was large and full of something. We could not dig it out for lack of tools. We took the blouse and the shell to the police and they are going to investigate. I got the creeps so bad that we left without further looking for the cache.

Went looking for our community's sole cache. Couldn't find it, but came up with two nickels and a flashlight that had been stolen from our local Fire Department back in February. Returned it to the Fire Chief and logged his thank you in a note to the CO.

Looks like it is just covered by leaves or pine needles. Probably no pointy object was used to hide the cache and it doesn't sound like you need a pointy object to find it.

There isn't anything wrong with finding out about a cache. Reading the cache page I don't think it is in violation of the guidlines.

I just found an older apple laptop computer wrapped up very well in several plastic bags. Someone went thru the trouble of wrapping it up & placing it. It was not just tossed into the woods down the hill. I cannot hack into it, because I have no clue; 1NatureDad said to give to the police... I should ha?

 

I found something similar except it wasn't a computer. I was on my way to a micro actually and I was searching and found something wrapped up in plastic store bags. It had a pistol grip and that was about all I could make out. So curiosity got the best of me and I ripped it open to find a Stanley brand spot light. I kept it > probably the best "swag" I've ever picked up.

This spring while looking once again for a former DNF, I found a prom dress just laying on top of the grass nearby GZ. Never did officially find the cache, although I figured out where it was when the owner archived it.

The best thing I ever found while caching was a $100 bill on the ground. This cache is still my most favorite late night micro.

My two unusual finds are both very different. The first was not long after I started caching and I uncovered someone's prized pornographic centrefold folded up and badly wrapped in tin foil under a rock while searching for GC1T0TB. There's a photo on the gallery page (still strategically folded so family friendly and SFW).

 

The other find was just a couple of days ago looking for GC2PPRJ. It's just off a busy road and I was furtling around behind a couple of trees and nearly stepped on an enormous and quite obviously human turd. The crowning glory was the discarded pair of socks which I can only presume had been used to mop up after the "relief". Needless to say that put me right off any further hunting for the cache.

Unfortunately on two separate occasions I found bags containing a very sad situation.

 

The 1st was not GCing related. the authorities were notified and the owner prosecuted. all others(5 still alive) were removed from the area by me and a friend in a late night sting along with two adult dogs the owner received 7,000 in fines and jail time. I'm taking it that this is probably along the lines as what you found

 

The second time I feel was just a homeless guys/gals old companion as 3 caches were pretty much surrounding the 'camp' area. And I found the litte guy wrapped nicely in a blanky with a few toys and a stuffed animal under a tree near the water.

once right after finding the "halloween tree" in maryland while walking back i found a dead cat that was on a lost pet poster that was up a few months back.... the most creepy part of it was thare was a cat cookie cutter in the cache!

I have found:

 

* A dead fox that had mummified due to weather conditions

* Human stool :s Disgusting

 

And the most unusual thing id found right next to a cache, was some knickers that looked to have been ripped, shoes and a bag..

I included it in my log of the cache and a woman who had done the cache that day to emailed me saying she had notified the police due to the area & how it all looked etc..

Maybe not the strangest thing... but I came across this fire hydrant in the middle of the woods. At first I thought, I bet that's the cache! But the GPS was reporting another 100 or so feet. So I went over to it and gave it a good shaking and it was a real, hooked up fire hydrant!

Many years ago, working in forestry - before the days of Geocaching. We were doing first thinnings on fir trees, which means cutting off the branches to shoulder height in very dense woodland. We cut through into a narrow trail and followed it deeper into the woods for about a third of a mile. At the end there was a cleared area with a suitcase in it. In the suitcase was a stash of bondage magazines and an inflatable woman neatly rolled up.

 

We packed it back up and left. Funny now, but at the time it was really quite weird.

 

Other things: A dartmoor mare who had died giving birth, with the foal also dead. Literally dozens of dead sheep and a few dead cats. A wallet (empty). A spot with around 40 spent rifle shells (This is the UK, it's not common!) and a shewee...

On another occasion, my boyfriend and I found a wallet full of cash, credit cards, and identification that looked like it had been sitting there for months. It turned out that the address on the documents didn't even exist! We turned it in to the police and no one claimed it.

Jedimaster and i went caching back in October in a local, public park. We were walking on an established trail with one of our dogs when she suddenly froze staring into the woods. Well, she saw a man, dressed in hunter camo, holding a big rifle across his knees, watching us. We didnt talk to him but we still went on to find the cache. Our best guess is he was hunting deer illegally (it was not gun season yet) and was trying not to draw attention to himself. If not for my dog, we never wouldve seen him. Creeeeepy!
