You Found What Near The Cache?

I've had a couple interesting experiences/finds while out caching.

The first one was when I first tried geocaching years ago. I was actually out with a buddy bow hunting for deer, but grabbing caches in the area as well. It had been a rainy morning and I ended up getting the truck stuck. After an hour or more of small progress with the truck, we finally get it out and I decide to break for the moment and get lunch/hydrated and rest a few. Out of a stand of oak trees a young man comes down the hill towards us. He introduced himself and inquired about our hunt and commented on getting the truck out of the muddy rut in the trail.

This would have not been so odd, if not for the following:

He was dressed in black jean pants, boots, a polo style shirt and had a leather, dressy, jacket on. He also had an unscoped bolt-action rifle slung on his back. He spoke with a heavy accent - best I could figure is he was from some East European country. I've known quite a few Bosnians and Croates and it was similar to their accents. What was a young man doing with a rifle, during a bowhunt, in the middle of the woods with no pack, or water, wearing fairly nice clothes?

I did not think much of it as my buddy and I talked with him, it was not until an hour or so later when I was sitting on a hill with the binoculars out and had spotted him running up a hill - and appeared to be chasing something I could not see - that made me really wonder.

=========

Second thing was just last week - first cache logged under my new username here. We were searching bushes looking for the container when my better half yells "found it" and proceeds to pull a rolled up shirt out of the bushes. She drops it when she realizes its a bit crusted over with some whitish stains on it. A few moments later we found another one.

Cremated remains. Found this in the past week in an old cemetary (pre-Civil war, no burials for the past 80+ years). The cemetary is very small, maybe about 30 or so markers. Found cremated remains in a modern green metal container that looked a lot likea ammo box on the ground. The sticker from the crematorium was torn away so the remains could not be identifed.

Found something strange this weekend, I'm still curious about it - might get me some big chemical resistant gloves and a long stick, go back out and investigate...

It was this cache: GCM6H7.

See my log on 7 March 09. (has a picture)

A 5 gallon bucket with cloudy brown/reddish liquid in it, with wire mesh formed over the top of the bucket as a lid...

What is it for? What is in it exactly? I don't know. It is in the middle of a Bird Sanctuary that is located on the grounds of a Monastery here in Southern AZ.

This weekend we found a carry-on tote - the zippered, roll around kind - in the middle of a large patch of brush. There were no tracks going in or out from the bag - it was just thumped right there in the middle, like someone had tossed it there.

I didn't go in and retrieve it. Felt kind of strange. The area is directly under the takeoff strip for the local airport, though. I might just go back and see what's in it. Or not!

my phone died so i couldnt take a picture .. but i dont think i could make this up ... today i found a fake breast i reached down and it was an odd black color ... i touched it and it was that rubbery silicon feeling so i immediatly dropped it ... when i did it flopped over and it was a rubbery breast nipple was very obvious once i took a good look ... it must have been cut off one of those full side dolls or a novelty item of some sort ...

I was doing maintenance on a cache of mine this past summer (Q series #5) and was about fifty feet away from my hide location when a naked man sat up! I turned to walk around the area, he called to me to "Not panic" and I just kept on walking.

Up till that moment I never wondered why the trail to that point was always mowed and well kept. Surprisingly, no one else has ever mentioned seeing him. Maybe I shouldn't have either.

A couple months ago my grandson, who is 15, and I took a french foreign exchange student out to search for a cache that I had been wanting to hit for some time. It is at the bottom of the tallest bridge in Oregon. Just as we reached the bottom of the hill that we had just come down 150' of rope (approx.), we found a dead girl who had been missing for about a week. Nothing gruesome, but we pretty much ran back up the rope. Got to a phone and called 911. Gave plenty of statements. Still haven't been back...

Everytime I head out to cache in rural areas I always tell myself that my day is coming when I come upon a dead person. Not really sure why I think this as I grew up in a rural area and have spent most of my life wandering the hills. But since I started geocaching 5 years ago, that though always comes into my mind since we seem to go out into lesser traveled areas.

I've been cecking out my caches today efter the winter to make sure they are in good condition and in one I found this :

http://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/c157af...82484e373c8.jpg

The cache is located in a tranquil area and the pipe was put in the plastic bag together with some chocolate in wraps that I didn't even bother examining. I guess a non-geocacher wanted to share ...

I found a Blue Marble one on the shoreline of a Lake here in Mid-Missouri. In the process of trying to get info on it Iwas told that there should be a metal tag in the ashes that can be used to track it. Will be taking the one I found to a local Funeral home today.

I didn't know this thread existed. I've been wanting to start it myself.

OK, the things I've found (omitting the gross since there's enough of that here already):

I inputted the coordinates to the cache wrong and the gps took me right to a large tent, all neatly rolled up in it's bag in some bushes (in the city). I collect tents so I thought that was pretty funny. The coordinates were right on for the tent. Half a block off for the cache. I left it assuming a homeless person would be back for it.

Then next to another cache I found an extension ladder. I left it too. I didn't need it.

then I found a really nice bicycle in a park. Just left on the ground, and it was pouring rain. No one else in the park. Not even another crazy ;) geocacher.

My geo-partner found my hiking cane I dropped one day. He gave it right back, but lectured me for dropping it without realizing it. After all it is a fifty dollar walking cane I almost left in the woods. How could I do such a thing!?!?

After we found the next cache, I gathered my stuff to walk off and found he had left his $600.00 GPS in the snow. I picked it up and walked quietly with it until I saw him suddenly patting all of this pockets urgently. "Looking for this?" I asked with attitude. I gave him a look but didn't say another word.

Red G-string hung in a tree on Sumas Mtn. The cache has been there for many years, and so has the underwear.

Dead Bobcat on the road heading to a FTF.

Deep in the urban woods - needles, condoms, porn, womens high heals, and women's clothing all lined up together within 6 ft of the cache. Scary stuff! The only time we have ever removed an active cache. Posted immediately what we did, relocated cache for owner in a better area of the park. Cache lives on.

Not while geocaching but in the course of looking at real estate - two differant pot plantations.

A few months ago, a fellow cacher and I attempted a newly placed cache on Signal Hill in Cape Town South Africa. As we approached the cache location we immediately headed for the tell tale pile of rocks. We unpacked the stones to find an amazing, ornately carved stone container. Complementing the cache owner on such a beautiful container we opened it to reveal its strange treasure. Inside the container lay a beautiful little mirror and a bird skeleton. My immediate thought was that we had just stumbled on one or Signal Hill's renowned Satanic hot spots on further reflection we realized that it was just the final resting place for someone’s beloved pet.

Awwwww...

Once while checking on an archived cache I lifted the moss that had been hiding the cache and found 4 syringes.

During a CITO a couple of weeks ago I found 4 syringes, our group found 18 and the total for the whole CITO group was over 50. (we were cleaning up an old homeless camp so we suspected that we'd find some before we even started)

I've seen more dead animals then I care to remember.

I came across a guy, miles out into the middle of nowhere, sitting on a rock, naked, having WAY to much fun with him self. he never saw me and I just quietly kept walking on down the trail.

While bushwhacking to a cache I found a 5 gallon bucket, hanging from a tree, filled with cement and sticking out of the cement were the heads of 3 garden gnomes. I left it there and have been tempted to go back and place a cache nearby calling it 'WTF?" lol

I have yet to find a live pot field but I did come across one that was at least a year old. I found 4, 5 gallon buckets filled with potting soil and about a half dozen holes in the ground that had been re-filled with potting soil. they all had stems about an inch wide cut off a couple of inches from the ground.

I helped with my first CITO this past weekend. I had the find of the day. A large purple rubber male appendage complete with attached purple nutsack. While finding the item was strange (it was in a bunch of bushes, must have been tossed out the car window or something) the strangest thing was when I called hubby after the CITO to let him know the group was meeting for lunch nearby and I wouldn't be home. I told him what I'd found and his response was "Did it work?". Ummmmm.....guess I didn't think to try it out. ROFLMAOPIP

Was driving towards a cache today and saw 2 small things on the very edge of the road, so I turned around to see what it was... turned out to be 5 small kittens about 5-6 weeks old and the Momma cat with them. They were all very friendly and no houses were around the area, so they must have been dumped by some person with a heart of stone! grrr... I took my dog out of his travel crate and started loading the cat and kittens in it, I am allergic to cats so I called a friend who owns a nice animal resort where I do training with my dog. They took all of them in to check them out and feed and find homes from all of them... if they dont keep them. The momma cat was very sweet and loving and all the kittens came up to me, there was no hissing or growling or meowing when I loaded them up, by the time I arrived at my friends place the momma cat was nursing her babies and my dog was laying next to his crate like on guard. So a start to a terrible day for the cats turned out to be a lucky and good day for them they are safe and inside now with no worries. :anitongue:

While hunting the area near what we suspected to be a cache site that had been washed away by a recent flash flood, I found a pair of pruning shears, and wood saw tucked into a hollow tree.

They were tucked into the hollow tree was down on the ground and had been recently under water. The tools didn't appear to have been there for long (not terribly rusted) but we were quite a ways from any location where these tools would belong.

My wife commented "That's not a good idea" as I shouted to her about my find and picked them up to show here. "Why?" I asked. . . She responded "Because of fingerprints...."

Really hadn't thought of that possibility.

Good news? The cache wasn't washed away - it was well secured with cables to it's hide site but had in fact been under water under a rushing flash flood just 24 hours before. Yay Us!

Cool multicache at the historic Battle of Peachtree Creek in Atlanta where 6,500 soldiers died in the Civil War. About 50 feet from the cache I was thinking about all those poor souls as I rounded a tree to see one of their "ghosts"---a fresh beautiful white HUMONGOUS FUNGUS about three feet in diameter, about 2 feet tall! I laid my Garmin GPSr on it for a size reference.

We walked into a local Wiccan coven during their ceremony. It was pretty neat. They where all in white clothing and walking in a large circle. We continued on and found the cache. On the way back through they were finishing up and chatting with one another. We stopped to say hello and talked for a bit. They where some very nice people.

On our first greocaching trip me and my friend Vinnie were searching in the woods surrounding a parking lot. We saw a fake plastic log that no one would ever mistake for a real one. We were positive we had found the cache only to realize it was just a broken toy someone discarded.

No pics, but it's about midway into this video

I watched the video and enjoyed it. I really felt sorry for you guys... :D Thanks for making the video and posting it!

I gotta tell you thought - I thought the log would make a really good cache container!

Glad you liked it. That log was too good to be true. We REALLY thought we had found the cache. It turned out to be too good to be true. It was filled up with water from a recent rain, so we just threw it out in a nearby bin, otherwise we may have taken it and used it to hide a cache of our own.

Caching with neices this summer. Found healthy wacky weed growing in large Sterlite containers just next to the cache (a very obvious ammo can). Whoever was growing the weed (it was NOT the cache owner) had big cajones to place his plants at a cache site! Kudos to the cache owner who notified authorities and disabled the cache until the plants were removed. My nieces got an impromptu lesson on drugs. Thankfully their parents were understanding and did not banish them from caching!

I found something similar at a cache. Tons of "Mary Jane" growing wild! The owner had no idea but I made a call to Crime Stoppers and she immediately disabled and retrieved the cache.

Of course, there's a good chance that nobody was growing it any more. Like I said, it looked like it had gone wild and had overgrown the whole area. But we were still concerned about two possibilities:

1) The current gardener and/or someone who discovered this and wanted to collect a "harvest" running into a cacher or

2) The police coming on this area while someone was at the cache. "Honest officer, I'm hunting tupperware!"

Cache: "Hjulsta, MP #1" (GC19JFT)

Urban cache in Sweden. A small park in the proximity of a residential area. In Sweden lots of caches are hidden under stones.

I checked every stone carefully and eventually I found the cache. Under some nearby stone anyway, I found a bottle of whisky, still sealed. I assume that some youngsters were hiding the booze and gathering in the place to have a perty occasionally.

I didn't take my chance anyway. It was a blended and I prefer Single malt

The other day I was searching for a cache at night at the end of a dead end road. I see something black and red with my flashlight and go around to see what it was. It turned out to be a duffle bag which was zipped up. I could tell that there was something in it and curiosity got the best of me so I had to open it. Inside was a lock box which had been broken into filled with jewelry boxes, all full. There was another jewelry box with a bunch of necklaces and rings as well. Included in one of the boxes was a diamond engagement ring that looked to be about 2 karats! There was also a locket with the word "Mom" on the outside and photos of her and her children inside. I put the treasure in my Jeep, finished finding the cache, and headed off to the police station. Hopefully, they will reunite the woman with her stolen jewelry.

Wow... now that's what I call finding treasure! It's strange all that jewelry was still in there. Maybe the bad guys heard you coming & dropped their loot. Did you make it the police station yet?

Edited to add: I thought your username looked familiar! We've really enjoyed all your new hides in the area. Out of curiosity... what city did you find the duffle bag in?

I was on my first geocaching expedition with my sister. She was convinced a post left by another geocacher was a "clue'. we were doing it without a GPS..... she was neck deep in grapevine digging around looking for the cache and came upon a large pot plant!!! it was resting in a nice patio planter with a container near by to collect the rain water...I suspect so the "owner" wouldn't be witnessed bring in jugs of water.

I work for the local police department as a cell monitor and felt it my duty to report the find as it was in a residential area... however nicely camo'd. I did so.That evening I recieved a call from the SGT on duty with a request to accompany him to the spot so i could pinpoint the location as they couldn't find it!!!

he asked why I was in there in the first place..i started to explain about geocaching...but he already knew all about it.

I lead him to the location ...he cut it down with his jack knife... I suggested he leave his business card as a little 'hey, we know there was pot growing here so don't do it again" :(

the Sgt thought that was a great idea and did so!!! we both had a great laugh!!!

I'm happy to report I did find the cache and it wasn't in the Grapevine!!!

I will give you one guess what this is about 30 meters from GC1C7JQ East on Bagram, Afghanistan.

Is that a land mine?

That is what it looked like to me. I gave the MP's the grid and a few pictures of the area, they said they would get EOD to check it out. I would have gone directly to EOD, but I did not know where their office was. I was just passing through Bagram on my way out of the country going home on R&R for 15 days.

I love this story. Happy ending. Did you go back for the cache at a later point?
