+Cheminer Will Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 I am fairly new to this and use Easy GPS to download and upload coordinates. I see a lot of discussion about GSAK here. I wonder if there is a site or thread that talks about the pros and cons of the two. It seems like GSAK might be more than a beginner needs and might complicate matters too much? Thanks Quote
+CompuCash Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 (edited) go to http://gsak.net/ for all the information you need - awesome program - I have used both GSAK and easygps - actually reinstalled easy last night to help answer a question for someone. For someone starting out easy may be all you need. But suggest you check it out - download a PQ and load it up and see what you can do. check the GSAK forum if you want - Clyde is very responsive with help if you need it but many of us watch the forum and can answer most questions.. also check this page - http://www.gsak.net/help/hs2000.htm when you the page you get another page of info - cc\ Edited April 2, 2005 by CompuCash Quote
+IVxIV Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 GSAK and Easy GPS are both free to try out.. why don't you just try both of them and decide for yourself which one you prefer? Reading "another persons" opinion really doesn't help you to know which one's best, "for you" I think GSAK is great. It's nOObie friendly, but also has very sophisticated features an advanced user really appreciates Quote

Thanks Easy gps is very easy to use and if all you want is to download coords to your gps that's all you need. It doesn't save the extra data you're paying for in the .gpx files. Watcher, a gpx utility by clayjar is the easy one for those files. GSAK from the little I've tried it, is not intuitive and takes time to learn. Considering how rapidly this sport is evolving, I'm not sure it's worth spending the time. I don't want to have to learn new programs every few months. Quote
+Pasha Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Well, I don't know about unintuitive. I didn't have any problems, and the support system is first rate (having the author be a regular poster here and with an excellent online FAQ and help file.) GSAK exponentially increases your filtering and mapping capabilities, and is a great tool for keeping your own database of caches and manipulating them in whatever way you want. A friend of mine has been caching for 4 years and making do with printing cache pages and tapping waypoints into his GPSr manually; one day with me (a two-month-old cacher) and my PDA and GPSr, filtered and ordered and organized via GSAK, and he's become a believer. +flask Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 i couldn't understand all the fuss about GSAK until i got it... i use it with cache mate and the combination of the two are very spiffy indeed. Quote
