What Are Your Extremes?

This topic is of no earthshattering importance, and may not even be related to geocaching, but it is similar to another recent topic and IS about using a GPS. Besides, it's a slow day here and I wanted to start a topic. :anibad:

A recent thread asked what your odometer reading is. But has anyone kept track of the farthest north, south, east or west they have been WITH THEIR GPS? I haven't seen this discussed yet so thought I would bring it up just for fun. If it has been discussed before then I apologize.

For me:

North -- N 41° 45.918

East -- W 85° 49.378

South -- N 30° 35.326

West -- W 104° 01.369

Dunno how to answer that. Furthest west or east or...... OK, I took my eTrex around the world on a working trip last year. Went from PA to the west coast then flew to Australia. From there, Singapore then London. From London back to PA. The trip was, on average, westward all the time so, is a little east of here the maximum distance west it has taken me? :anibad::anibad::anibad:

Thanks for adding these. I know my highest 8182 ft. at GCGJFW From NM to OK As the Crow Flies. Don't know my lowest elevation.

Ever since I went to China, I can't figure out how to do my east/west extremes. I guess I have to consider it west, since I went that way. In that case, my extremes are:

Furthest West: Longitude ~100°East (Lijiang, Yunnan, China)

Furthest East: Longitude ~80°West (Eastern shore of FL on bicycle)

Furthest North: Latitude ~50°North (Kenora, ON)

Furthest South: Latitude ~9°25'North (Costa Rica)

Highest elevation: A little over 9000ft (NM on bicycle)

Lowest elevation: -235 ft (Shore of Salton Sea on bicycle a few days later)

Here is my confluence map, which closely approximates my extrema.

Hey, this was fun!

My extremes (to which I have physically been) are:

North: History in a Bottle N 51° 34.145 W 000° 08.625

West: Canadian Gravity Standardization Net N 43° 17.817 W 079° 48.095

South and East: Poacher's Lookout(Kenya) S 02° 57.749 E 037° 58.603 (FTF!)

That's a range of a little over 54 degrees of latitude and 117 degrees of longitude.

Well, since I had my GPS long before I started caching, I can't use caches to reference, but:

North: ~68°30'N

South: ~12°00'N

East: ~60°00'E

West: ~112°00'W

But, I will be heading to California in a few weeks on business. That will stretch my West a bit!

Highest: 9050 ft (outside Salt Lake City, UT)

Lowest: ~ -1250 ft (Dead Sea)

This is fun. All of the these were on my motorcycle with my GPS V. We have found, or attempted to find caches near all of them.

North N43 44.689 W088 24.089 North of Milwalkee WI 948 mi. from home

West N38 37.676 W090 11.865 St. Louis MO 712 mi. from home

South N 24 33.267 W081 48.046 Key West FL 451 mi. from home

I thought I was too lazy to look this up, but GSAK made it pretty easy, since I already have a pocket query of all of my finds.

East: Belfast, Northern Ireland W 6 13.957

West: Bodega Bay, CA W 117 04.479

North: Belfast, Northern Ireland N 54 43.652

South: San Diego, CA N 33 02.629

Longest distance between two caches: 5130 miles

Now that I look at them, all of these outer points were hit in the last six weeks, while travelling on business. My "normal" finds that I've done with the family are contained in a much more conservative radius of about 50 miles. We'll see if vacation time this year broadens that a bit.

 It takes me three caches to list my extremes.

Most East - Royal Observatory Greenwich Cache (GCK7HH) W000 00.090

Most South - Harry Hill Cache (GC325E) N19 41.197

Most West - Hairy Hill Cache (GC325E) W155 27.978

Most North - Fairbanks Travel Bug Drop Box (GCHPMV) N64 49.313

Looking at distance, the furthest east to west is 7295.4 miles.

Farthest north and south isn't too difficult, but the answers the "farthest east and west" questions are not as easy. I've carried my Garmin V around the world and across the int'l date line many times; so in one sense, the answer could be 180° E / 180° W. But I think a better way would be to use the highest N/S latitude numbers and E/W longitude numbers at caches I've found. In that case, they would be:

North = EARTHQUAKE!!! (Alaska) N61° 11.927'

South = By The Bay (NSW, Australia) S33° 55.022'

East = First Landing (Fiji) E177° 24.811'

West = Gone But Not Forgotten (Hawaii) W157° 52.278'

I am not sure of the exact cords, but I have them in a pic somewhere, but when I was in Brazil with my Dad about 2 years ago, we went to a place called the "Ponta das Seixas" =Pebble Point, Anyway this is the most eastern oriental point of the Americas, It's in North Eastern Brasil. I may be going back this year and plan to do a virtual cache there.

My furthest south is also the oldest active cache I've found: Melbourne's First, placed 10/8/2000 at S37° 15.313 E145° 10.020

A few other Australian caches were a bit higher in the E numbers. I think the highest was Departure Dragon Yellow at Cairns E145° 44.913

West - not very far. Somewhere in the Salt Lake area W111°

North - barely past the N 40°s but June 11-12 I will be in Barrow, Alaska where there are several caches and those should be the furthest north I will ever get.

Altitude ? I've found at least one that was over 10,000 ft in Colorado. And I've done a lot of barely above sea level ones in Florida.
