+Inukshuk and Arwen Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 Thanks to the amazing talents and generosity of the geocaching community, Geograph now has its own website! Geograph The aim is to collect photographs of every square kilometer of the British Isles! You could think of it as a game in which you earn a point for every new square you photograph, but it should also appeal to anyone interested in geography, photography, maps etc. Please come and have a look at the site and tell us what you think and perhaps even go and photograph a square near you. We hope you like what we have created! The site is being run as an open source development project - if you want to help, please get in touch via the site. A very public thankyou must go to the gentleman who is Lordelph and the other developers for the truly monumental amount of work they have freely given over the last few weeks to get this website up and running in a viable form. Thanks folks best wishes Inukshuk Quote
Deego Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 I have signed up Dont know how many I will have time to do But I have a large photo collection from around the area. Hope it takes off Quote
+Kitty Hawk Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 Oh, I'm glad you've started this thread again, I was thinking about it over the weekend and wished I'd bookmarked the site. Cheers, I'll do my best to get you some decent shots - if they're rubbish though do you delete them when a better one shows up or are you landed with it? I'd be happier submitting a photo if I knew I wasn't denying a superior photo it's place - I am not yet an undiscovered photography talent. Adrian Quote
+Happy Humphrey Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 It seems to have taken off well, now, thanks to the excellent interface which has given the project a very professional feel. I've been sending in photos whenever I've had a few minutes - obviously so have quite a few others. The only time I've resisted sending a photo in is when I don't think it's a really great one, but it's likely to be a popular square for photographs. I had a decent one of Ironbridge, but it wasn't brilliant so I didn't send it. Soon after, a much better photo appeared for that square. For more obscure places, almost anything will do - otherwise the square is likely to be blank for ever! HH Quote
+lordelph Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 I've spent virtually every minute of spare time since Feb 6th getting the site developed, so it's nice to see it starting to take off. We've got lots of features in the pipeline, such as a decent search and map browsing, so stick with it! Credit should also be given to fellow geocacher Barry Hunter, who has contributed many fixes and suggestions over the past 6 weeks, as well as being the "King of Geodetic Data" Cheers, I'll do my best to get you some decent shots - if they're rubbish though do you delete them when a better one shows up or are you landed with it? There is a basic guide on the site, and we're working on a more detailed one now we have more examples to work with. In a nutshell, all submissions are moderated in one of three ways * rejected - rejected images might have people as the focal point, be badly focussed or lit, or have too little information for the title and comments. * supplemental image - good image, but not necessarily geographically representative of the square. * geograph - good image, shows some geography of the square, is accompanied by a good title and comment. When you view a square, "geographs" are always shown first, followed by supplemental images. We're working on a cool "map browser' which shows thumbnails of the first image in each square, and we'll most likely implement some way to promote a truly great image to the number one spot (without altering the 'geograph points' leaderboard) I hope people will find this a fun activity while out caching! +Birders Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 <<I hope people will find this a fun activity while out caching!>> Oh yes... it's totally brilliant and, as when we started geocaching, we're learning lots of new things about our neighbourhood. You can also geograph in poor weather when traipsing through wet forest and muddy tracks would not be much fun if you're a wrinkly. Many congrats to those involved - hope their endeavours pay off handsomely Quote
+Happy Humphrey Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) Geograph is now nearly eight years old, and 268,085 grid squares have been photographed (many of them hundreds of times!). There are currently 3,281,054 images...but there's plenty of room for more... Edited January 16, 2013 by Happy Humphrey Quote
+maxx borchovski Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Looks like fun, except my location is completely red, so nothing left to do Quote
+Happy Humphrey Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) Looks like fun, except my location is completely red, so nothing left to do Most squares have been geographed for a long time, but there's plenty of scope for adding more photos to the same square. There are many sub-games going on as well for a bit of entertainment, such as accumulating points or adding photos to fill in centisquares within grid squares. A popular one is submitting geograph photos in the hope that you get nominated for one of the weekly "Photo Of The Year" shortlists. Or you might add a photo that exactly matches a much older one so that we see the changes. Or you have a trip to obscure parts of Scotland or Ireland where there are still lots of First Geographs to be had. Not a bad excuse to get off the beaten track a bit. There are still quite a few squares in England that haven't yet been Geographed, but mostly in the Liverpool/ Southport area, or Norfolk / Lincolnshire. And you'll have to be a bit adventurous.
