ArthurDent Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Has anyone set up any travel bugs for a school class project? I am going to pitch the idea to my son's third grade teacher. If you have any suggestions or things I should do/not do I would appreciate the advice. I already figured out how to buy and activate the tb's. I just want to get the heads up if anyone has tried and run into problems. Thanks. So long and thanks for all the fish - ArthurDent Quote
+El Diablo Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 I've never tried it, but what a great idea! Think of all the future Geocachers you may be creating. Good luck with it. El Diablo Everything you do in life...will impact someone, for better or for worse. http://www.geo-hikingstick.com Quote
+CraZy Cache Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Check out the GPS in Education forum http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=frm&s=5726007311&f=9116058331 I read a thread there one time where a 4th grade class launched the yellow schoolbus TB in the Cannonball Run. That forum really has some good information for getting it into schools and such. Crazy Cache Quote
+SerenityNow Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Hi! You might want to check the travel bug Flat Stanley for an example of using a travel bug as a school project. My daughter (Finding Fraggle Rock) sent out this travel bug with her first grade class last year and followed his travels on line. He's in France now! +TEAM 360 Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Check out the TB "Yo" that I just left in New Mexico. It's from a class in Florida. Quote
+Criminal Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Sounds good to me, I can't think of any reason not to. I can't think of anything funny to say about it either. http://fp1.centurytel.net/Criminal_Page/ Quote
+Prime Suspect Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 As long as they're mature enough not to get too upset if it goes nowhere, or gets lost, then I say go for it. It could be a lot of fun for them. If they aren't that mature, invite them to whine about it here on the message boards. They should fit right in with the others. "Don't mess with a geocacher. +Sallies Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 A group of children that I teach have released a Travel Bug - Freeville Flyer. They created the cache that he started off from and have been following the travels with interest. Unfortunately the last person to pick him up in Germany hasn't logged the TB in. We have sent 2 emails but have had no response. We are just hoping that he will work out what to do and our TB can start to move again! Sallies Quote
GrandpaCannon Posted August 13, 2003 Posted August 13, 2003 Fruitty Tutti http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=18444 is currently winning it's race between Miss Fry's and Mr. Finch's classes at Timpanogos Academy in Lindon Utah. I hope to release another couple of bugs for the School this school year. Quote

+Mark 42 Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 Maybe buy a few, start some caches, and set some sort of goal (same or different for each?) like having one visit all 7 continents, or themed to something they are studying. If you arrange with the teacher in such a way that you and the kids do most of the work, he/she will probably be a friend for life! Let the kids bring stuff to stock the cache with (it'll give them a sense of "ownership") Maybe they could vote which items would make good hithikers for travel bugs. BTW, this is a great idea. It could be adjusted for a lrge spectrum of age groups. Quote

+Doc-Dean Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 A local teacher here has done it with her class with great results... Check out: Mrs. White's Cache Class You can look up some of the bugs I've moved for the class: Dr.Evil and Quackers. I think its a great school project and wish I had something this cool when I was a kid, although I did have an Atari 2600 which was cool back then... Free your mind and the rest will follow Quote
