Guest dakboy Posted December 3, 2001 Posted December 3, 2001 I'm hoping to buy my first GPS within the next week or so, and anxious to start the treasure hunt! I was very excited to learn that there are several caches within walking distance of my apartment. Is it OK if, on my first couple cache-finding expeditions, I don't take or leave anything, but simply make an entry in the logbook? I'd like to do this a few times to get a feel for how things work and what people tend to put into caches. Upon finding a cache, is it customary to come back to geocaching.com and make an entry on the web for that cache? Are there any other unspoken "conventions" or basic guidelines I should be mindful of? Quote

Guest scooterj Posted December 3, 2001 Posted December 3, 2001 Welcome! Sure, it's okay to just sign the logbook and not take/leave anything. That's usually what I do, I just enjoy the hunt. As for logging on the website too, yee, that's a good thing to do. Oftentimes cache owners only rarely get to check on their caches, the log entries on the web site let them know that their cache is being visited and what condition it is in. The online logs also help other people looking for the same cache later. Enjoy! Quote
Guest hgmonaro Posted December 3, 2001 Posted December 3, 2001 Seems pretty common from the logs I've read for people to record their visit in a log book and not swap anything. Some people are attracted by the trinkets, some the chase... either way it's nice to record your visit for the cache owner to see someones been. If you can see any problems with the cache, like it's full of water, you can let the cache owner know, just remember the spoiler rules (don't post anything that could give the cache away to future cachers without a warning or better still , encode it) so welcome, and have fun! Guest bunkerdave Posted December 3, 2001 Posted December 3, 2001 When logging a cache, it is always more fun for the hider if finders tell about their hunt. Granted, some caches don't give much to tell, but many do, and it is appropriate to mention the fun experiences had while hunting them. This is really the only reward anyone gets for hiding a cache, so I always appreciate it when people take the time to write more about their experience so I can see if they had the fun time I was trying to give them. Trading is up to you. I seldom trade at all, but it never hurts to leave something from time to time without taking anything, either. Call it "good karma." Happy hunting! Quote

So, if someone finds my cache and doesn't log it online, I might not know for a very long time (or at all, if, God forbid, it gets plundered in the meantime). Also, I love keeping up with the logs of caches I've visited. I'll check them all about once a month or so, just to see who's around. I've already found the caches, and I'm not likely to return to most of them (the hard ones I'll go back for), but I keep up with the online logs so that I get to know the cachers around here (so that when we meet, I'll have things to talk about). Anyway, online logs are the candy of geocaching, at least to the more historical of us, so unless you've got a real phobia (which some people do, and I'm okay with that), at least say you were there and make us happy. It came yesterday in the mail and hubby had a great time testing it out in the car but I must wait until the 25th I am already plotting on where I will leave caches and where I will go hunting first.
