I go to subscribe and it says I need a "subscription id".

I look at the original email from Groundspeak and there is a

"Validation Code" but no "Subscription ID".

 

This is Catch 22.

I guess I'll still stay with the basic membership.

If you paid by credit card you get no subscription ID (read the insturctions). You have to wait for it to be activated.

 

You only get the ID if you pay through PayPal.

Validation emails are to verify the email address you've given the site is real.

 

To get a paid membership you pay and then you'll get a subscription ID (number). If you use paypal the ID will be sent to you. If you mail in a check, or use a CC they'll update your account for you, when they get to it.
