I'm a newbie and I'm trying to download Way points for the first time. I downloaded EasyGPS and then downloaded a three Way points. I attached my Garmin eTrex Legend with an USB adapter. It is plug and play and the computer acknowledged that I plugged in it ( I use Win XP Home on a Toshiba laptop).

In Easy GPS when I select the eTrex as my GPS a box opens (GPS Settings) . This box asks if you use USB or the com port if you use serial. However, all areas are grayed out so I can't select anything. I read through the help, but no luck.

Any help will be appreciated.

You're using serial, not USB. The adapter adapts the USB port to a real serial port. In order to transfer waypoints, the Garmin has to be set to Garmin interface, while to talk to most mapping programs it has to be set to NMEA in/out. As for EasyGPS, I don't use it, so I can't help much. I abandoned it long ago. GSAK works much better for me.

I have the same GPSr, Garmin eTrex Legend, and use it with a Toshiba laptop with a USB adapter. Nightpilot is right that you need to set it to serial instead of USB, but it sounds like you're not even getting to that point. The fact that the options are greyed out for you makes me think that the software doesn't see any COM ports available at all... I think you need to install or reinstall the drivers that came with your Serial/USB adapter and verify the COM port you're using.

One other thing - with this GPSr I can't set the software to use anything about 57600 for a port speed without errors. If that's an option for you, try setting the speed to that or even 38400.

Hope that helps.

USB-serial adapters aren't plug-and-play. You have to install the drivers for them before they will work properly. You should have received a CD with the adapter, and you need to run it and install the drivers. If you didn't get one, you should be able to go to the manufacturer's website and download the drivers.

After installing the drivers, go into Device Manager and see if you see an entry for Ports (com and lpt). If you do, check the com port shown, and make sure you give that to EasyGPS. If not, then the adapter won't work, and you need to try again.
