+GeoLibrarian Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Hello! I will be visiting the D.C. area as a chaperone with a group of middle school students. I hoping that I'll get a chance to grab at least a couple easy virtuals while I am out there. Can some one give me some recommendations? Here are the sites that we will be stopping to see: Capital building, supreme court, Folger Library, Congressional Library, Air & Space Mueseum, Centennial Building, Mt. Vernon, Arlington, Nat. Hist. Museum, Ford's Theater, Pentagon Mall, Lafayette Park, Vietnam Memorial, American History Museum, Holocaust Museum, Nat. Cathedral, Nat. Art Gallery, Nat. Archives, Planet Hollywood, Union Station. It will be a whirlwind tour, so just a few quick virtuals or really easy ones that I could grab while at the sites would be great. Thanks! GeoLibrarian Quote
+bigcall Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 You're talking virtual central, so there are many to pick from. Here's the GC map of the area. A few of my favorites on the Mall that may fit your bill given the listed agenda: Solar Sailing (near the Air and Space Museum) Capitol View (near the Capitol) Mile Zero (near the White House) The actor really did break a leg (near Ford's Theater) I can see Lincoln (near Lincoln, Korea, Viet Nam Memorials) View of an "Honest Man" (near Lincoln, Korea, Viet Nam Memorials) So we will remember them (near Lincoln, Korea, Viet Nam Memorials) There are 6 virtuals in Arlington Cemetary - beware though, I wouldn't classify any of them as "easy" since they'll have you walking (up and down some pretty big hills) a good deal. Let's see, off the Mall: Wash National Cathedral (self explanatory) Never, never, never, never give up (kinda near Nat. Cathedral) In VA there are a few also: Washington's Tomb (near Mt. Vernon) Original Front Gate (near Mt. Vernon) The listing (which is by no means exhaustive) of caches above are all virtuals, there are some traditional caches in DC, but they aren't in the usual tourist spots so I'm not sure they would be appropriate for a gaggle of middle school students. Hope you find this somewhat useful and have a good trip! Quote
+Tiffany's Slaves Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 I recently did this with my daughters and agree about Virtual Central. A couple of my personal favorites : Out of the Swamp (GC9D91) - What I learned here was amazig Well I Declare (GC77F7) Even though I'd been to the area many times, this was a big surprise Pointing Skyward (GCBB5C) At the Air and Space Museum Thre are others to be done - I also liked one at the Canadian Embassy (Neighbors), the Natural History Museum ("He's Tops") and the Navy Memorial (The Lone Sailor) but I am not sure you will be at those locations.
